Typically dine here every other month and the food and service is always topnotch. My rating of 3 stars overall for this visit deals with the attitude of the hostess who was not pleased when I requested that we be seated upstairs. Once she escorted us to our seats, the menus were thrown on the table, we were not told to enjoy our meal, and upon leaving she did not thank us for coming in. For the price one is paying to have a nice overall dining experience at this restaurant, her non-professionalism in dealing with customers was very disappointing.
A bit off-putting at first when we arrived before our reservation but the table wasn't ready and we got scolded for being in the way (with 2 children and 2 infants there's a reason we make reservations) but the table we ended up with not too long after our reservation time was great. Only one of the kids got their order before the rest of the food, which took longer than the table next to us that arrived some time after us, but when the food got there is was great. Wonderful brunch overall.
Always a great experience at DelRay Cafe. There’s a reason they stay busy. I love how they remember you and your family and friends. I also love how the staff doesn’t change often. That says a lot about how they feel about their employer. I love bringing guests in from out of town!
Small birthday brunch with family. Food was amazing, as always. Service was great too!
I have been here many times and have never been disappointed in any of those experiences. I definitely recommend Del Ray Cafe to family and friends
The food was amazing, the atmosphere was wonderful and the staff was terrific; we will certainly be returning to the Del Ray Cafe again in the near future!
Our meal and our service were excellent, as always! It is our favorite neighborhood restaurant.
Very nice dinner. Excellent service and very tasty food.
3 generations spanning 70 years were greeted warmly by the gracious staff. The first floor dining area has just a few tables, so was cozy and almost private. Food was fabulous: my boullabaise was sublime; companions tucked into lobster, steak, and the lamb/duck/cannelloni. Since it was Valentine's Day, couldn't resist the scrumptious desserts! Great experience, though pricey, so definitely a "special occasion" place.
Very meh experience for the price. Food was okay, but nothing special. Nice looking space though
Once again the cafe did a superb job of providing quality meals in a pleasant atmosphere. The service is first rate and the owner is great.
Cute place for lunch on a weekday. I liked the "homey" feel, French decor, light wood floors. Highly recommend the lobster eggs benedict. My friend commented that she liked the side salads because they weren't dripping in dressing - the dressing was tasty, but not overpowering. Service was good -- attentive.
I dined with my mother on a rainy Wednesday night, so the restaurant was quiet. Our waiter was very thorough and attentive. Our meals were wonderful. We each had a salad to start. The DRC salad and the heirloom beet salads. Both were fresh, tasty, and perfectly dressed. For entrees we both were so pleased. My mother had the classic cassoulet, which she said is among the best she has had in the states. I had the PEI mussels with the chorizo and jalapeños. The quantity of mussels was plentiful and the chorizo was fantastic! I can’t forget to mention the bread and the fries! Both were AWESOME! The ambience and noise level was nice, however the dishes and tables didn’t match the menu and prices. It’s probably much more appropriate for the breakfast and lunch meals the serve. Felt a little like a diner in that sense. That however will not deter me from coming back! Loved the food and staff.
Del Ray Cafe is clearly the BEST food in Alexandria. It is consistently the best! If I am not going into DC, this restaurant is the only place that I want to eat.
Our go-to place for brunch or lunch with friends. Special treat that the owner waited on us. He was attentive and informative. He's also a dog lover. A little bit of the French country-side tucked away in Del Ray.
A welcome and inviting place for a weekday lunch with friends. Kind and caring service and very fresh and thoughtfully prepared food.
AS ALWAYS, FIRST RATE. Food was delicious. Waiter was very, very good. We'll bet back again and again.
Can't express enough how wonderful our brunch was on Sunday. The food is always amazing here and the staff went above and beyond to help us celebrate our engagement! Thank you so much
Phenomenal dinner during restaurant week. Snails were devine, steak-frites succulent and profiteroles perfect. All kicked off with one of the best Manhattans I’ve ever been poured.
Server above & beyond. Gave 28 year old son a dog treat & he was very excited. Helped persnickety Mother find just the right wine. Oysters (& waiter’s very helpful description) were phenomenal. Will definitely be back!
We had been to Del Ray Café earlier during Restaurant Week for a friend's birthday and liked the special menu so much that we went back later in the week. Always a pleasure!
This was our second time to Del Ray Cafe' & this will be our last visit. During our first visit, we were seated at a narrow bench table in the front of the restaurant looking out to Howell St. The bench table (it was NOT a real table) was so narrow, we could barely eat. This time we actually got a table upstairs on the right side of the second floor. From the moment we arrived, we were rushed. First the waiter was impatient and wanted us to order our food from the moment we sat down. We ordered a glass of wine each. We wanted to drink our wine in peace & peruse the menu. The waiter came by THREE times & you could see he was not a happy camper. They ran out of Sauvignon Blanc!!! Then Laurent Janowsky came to our table & LECTURED us on how he is a small restaurant & it's restaurant week (as if we didn't know) & we needed to order. Plus, he kept giving us dirty looks as he walked around the room. What he doesn't remember is that we used to go to La Bergerie once a month when it was open for over 25 years. We ordered & we were STILL rushed. The lobster bisque was AWFUL. It tasted like RUST. We had to send it back. The pate' was stiff & not creamy & was served with ONE slice of sour dough bread. Because we decided to go with the Restaurant Week menu, we did NOT get a bread basket. That was Laurent's doing. He was snappish, rude & pushy, acting as if he didn't know us from all those La Bergerie lunches & dinners. He was overly solicitous to some, but always made time to RUSH us. The calamari was just OK--nothing to rave about. Laurent was terse & snippy when we told him the lobster bisque tasted like rust (metallic). He has a big ego & no concern for a bad soup for a patron. Shame! The chocolate mousse tasted like chocolate pudding & not even a good brand such as JELLO. The tenderloin was NOT tender & it was cooked medium. My Creme Brulee was lackluster to say the least. It seems that Laurent has become very CHEAP in his kitchen. Auvoir!
The Del Ray Cafe is a definite “BE BACK !“ for us. The ambience was warm and welcoming. The staff was attentive and fun. The food was fantastic.
We particularly enjoyed this visit to the Del Ray Cafe because we were seated in a small upstairs room that's unusually quiet. Sometimes in the main room it gets a bit noisy, and downstairs the tables are very close together. We always enjoy the lunch menu, especially the salmon.
It is our favorite place for awesome French dining. Everything organic and local. Prepared perfectly and served by attentive friendly staff.
We enjoyed Del Ray for restaurant week. Especially the service. Food was very good. We had the short ribs and the crab cake. The wine list was a little disappointing. Not very moderate prices on some of the wine selections. Either cheap house $15/carafe or expensive wine. More $20-$40 bottles are warranted. Moderately priced Rose & Cote du Rhone'swould be appreciated. Now that we have tried this neighborhood gem I am looking forward to going back for their brunch.
The chicken was the best we have had! I enjoyed the short ribs / very tender and flavorful.
We went for Restaurant Week. As our choices were limited we each ordered the same: Salad, crab cake and profiteroles for dessert. All were excellent, tho I thought the crab cake had a bit too much filler. The service was excellent. My companion was very explicit about the service he expected. He wanted the salad first and the entrée was not to be delivered to the tale until we were finished with the salad. In other words, he doesn't like being rushed. Who does? The courses came out perfectly timed and unhurried. Thanks you. Cesar! Another lovely dining experience at the DRC!
This was my first visit to DelRay Cafe, but it won’t be the last! The food and service were outstanding, and my friends and I really enjoyed the evening. My only complaint is the noise level, but I guess that was mostly because there were lots of other people enjoying themselves too!
This is our favorite restaurant. We were celebrating a birthday and happened to be there during Restaurant Week. Unlike some restaurants that trot out pretty much anything for RW, Del Ray Cafe had a fabulous menu and everything was wonderful. An unexpected plus - a sulfite-free red wine. Trying to find time to go back and have another calamari appetizer before Restaurant Week is over.
