Del Ray Cafe
Everything perfect as we expected!
Primarily imaginative slight twist on familiar french dishes. Very comfortable environment.
I'm torn. The sea bass was great. And my friend enjoyed the scallops. But. Part of the plate was supposed to be roasted potatoes. And they did not appear. And the waiter did not notice. Eventually I flagged down the waiter who shrugged and brought a belated serving of the missing potatoes but by then the meal was over.
At these prices and in a restaurant of this type, one expects and deserves better.
The Del Ray Cafe is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant that is well worth the drive if you don't live in the neighborhood. The food and service are excellent without being fussy. The atmosphere is cozy without feeling cramped. It is one of my favorite restaurants in Alexandria.
Went to Del Ray Cafe for Valentines Day (actually the Saturday after VD). They extended their special Valentines menu through Sunday since VD was in the middle of the week. Their special menu and their regular menu were both available so it didn’t feel like the usual holiday restaurant hijacking. The food was great and the service was outstanding. DRC always lives up to its reputation as a cut above. We had the lobster special and the cassoulet with beignets for dessert and all was delicious. Highly recommend DRC for any occasion, especially if it’s a special occasion.
Great Food and Great service at a price that is a fantastic value in the DC Metro area. Our favorite place by far in Alexandria.
My favorite Alexandria restaurant is the Del Ray Cafe. Food is delicious and well presented and the staff all care very much about the quality of customers’ experiences. I enjoy eating there and I also enjoy swinging by after work for a take-out roast chicken with potatoes, baguette and bottle of white burgundy. I also like the casual and elegant atmosphere of the restaurant. Well done DRC!
Food and service were both outstanding. This was my third visit overall. We were there for breakfast. I had the lobster eggs Benedict on the special and my friend had the crab eggs Benedict. We shared a side of potatoes. Everything was outstanding and such kind people work there. I recommend Del Ray Cafe with no reservations. Will be back as soon as I can.
We had a lovely Valentine’s dinner last night at Del Ray Cafe. As always, the food, the service and the ambiance were top notch!
We are return and will continue to be return customers.
The steaks are the best I've eaten. They are very accommodating for gluten-free dining. Their wine list is excellent.
I was there fore lunch. Veggie risotto was fine, but a little bland. I regretted not getting the quiche with peppers and goat cheese. Cappuccino was way too hot; this is so easy to get right with a small amount of training; every barrista in Italy can do it without a problem, but it's almost impossible to find decent cappuccino in the US.
My first time in the restaurant, it was nicely decorated, quiet enough, and the staff was friendly.
Wonderful food in a relaxed friendly environment. Mussels were excellent!
It was a good evening, the beet salad was fantastic and I’m not a salad guy but yummy, my date mussels were great and the service was very friendly and accommodating and thank you for sending the croquettes for dessert.
Had dinner with a friend who had flown in from California. The food was out of this world! Good wine selection. Fantastic service.
First time at the Del Ray Cafe. We had the classic french onion soup. Perfect. Mussels and scallops for dinner. Very Tasty. You won't believe the selection of desserts. Soufle w/ Grand Marnier. Out of this world. We will go back for breakfast later this week.
The French onion soup was delicious as were the salads. We LOVED the Halibut, which was one of the daily specials. My husband wasn't quite as enchanted with the short ribs though. The profiteroles weren't QUITE as divine as the ones we ate in Paris, but still quite tasty!
The best food in Del Ray, and among the best in Alexandria. Low turnover of servers, so they greet return customers. That's a good sign. It's truly a neighborhood gem.
My first meal at Del Ray Cafe and it was supreme. I had the venison which was tender and cooked perfectly. My colleague had the bouillabaisse and loved it. The wine selections complemented the meals. The grand marnier souffle was exceptional. We'll be back.
Had a fantastic two family brunch at Del Ray Cafe! Excellent cappuccino! Divine veggie quiche... real maple syrup on the table for those enjoying the french toast or buttermilk pancakes. This place is going on the brunch rotation!
Great food, great service, comfortable setting. Parking was the only drawback. Would highly recommend.
All the food was fantastic. We had a party of eight and ordered a very diverse amount of items. The SOS, the Lobster egg Benedict and the beignets were the best. If you have a party of more than 4 you should make a reservation if possible.
Superb in every way!
My son and I both had cassoulet that had a nice taste, plenty of beans, but lacking meat. The one slice of sausage was tasty, but most all other solid pieces were fatty and grisly. At $30 we did not feel it was a very fair value for mostly beans.
The halibut special with saffron risotto was excellent, and the chocolate souffle was delicious. I appreciated that the owner (or chef - not positive who he was) came to the table to check on us. The service was great - attentive without being disruptive. Overall, great evening.
Friends from Arizona - visiting this month remembered it from last trip - excellent as always - they loved their crab cakes!!
I had a perfect rare hanger steak!! nice break from my standard/fav mussels order.
We went twice during Restaurant Week, having enjoyed the special menu so much the first time. Del Ray Cafe continues to be my favorite place, and we are so lucky it's in the neighborhood.
Excellent service. Food top notch. Pleasant experience
The consistency and the quality of the food never ceases to amaze me. Service is exceptional.
Good quality food. Plenty of choices. Everything arrived on time. Waiters were fantastic. And, other wait staff ensured we enjoyed the ambience while they filled up water, promptly cleared salad and other dishes, and moved the meal experience forward without our feeling rushed.
We love the restaurant but they have to do something about a waiting room. THere is currently none and having customers wait on the stairs, and having to stand is not acceptable in this market. Also the dinner was excellent but the vegetables were served cold although my duck was hot. I understand the house is late 1800's or early 1900's but it may be necessary to built it out in front or at least put heaters on the porch and put something in front to block wind. The expense will be appreciated by all customers in the wintertime.
Good food and service but not the value it used to be.
Such a delightful neighborhood French cafe here in fun Del Ray Alexandria VA. For a business lunch, my colleague had the butternut soup which was exquisite and a vegetarian entree. I had the fish of the day which was cod over risotto with vegetables and a light sauce. Service was gracious and efficient. And a nice value - maybe half of what we'd pay in the city for a comparable quality dining experience. I'd look for any excuse to go back. But don't everybody come - I want a seat!
My first visit here has been a revelation: excellent food in a casual atmosphere.
Amazing food options. Everything was wonderful. Service was great. Perfect spot for a nice, but casual dinner. Will be returning for brunch or dinner again soon!
Food was outstanding, as always. Service was, as always, fantastic. Always a terrific dinner out!
So, my birthday falls right around restaurant week and I’d been trying to try Del Ray Cafe for a full meal ( I’d met friends there for dessert before and their meals looked amazing ). We had 6:45 pm reservations on a weeknight for 3 people. While we were promptly seated, the seating was awkward: the three of us were at a table for 8 at the back of the house upstairs. Like I said, awkward. While we were promptly seated at 6:45, at 7:10, we had to flag down a server—-we were about to walk out at that point. We all ordered from the restaurant week options. I had oysters to start, they were very good. My main was the venison with cauliflower gratin and broccolini. I’d ordered my venison medium, which I was told was the preferred prep for this meal. Two of the three medallions were perfect, the third was pushing rare. The sauce for the venison was definitely on point. For dessert it was the chouclettes (sp?), which were delicious. They also brought me a special Happy Birthday plated choiuclette in addition, which was a nice touch.
The extremely long wait after being seated and the awkward interruptions to fill our water because of the awkward seating arrangements is just something I’m having a super hard time getting past.
My friends and I had a delicious lunch in the upstairs dining area. It was bright with lots of lovely windows to look out of and the service was very good. Will definitely be back again--well worth the trip over from Vienna!
As always the service is excellent, and the food is superb. The restaurant week menu is great and a good bargain
I had the Restaurant Week menu. The first two courses were fine, almost (Oysters, cod with lemongrass sauce but I tasted no lemongrass) The dessert (strawberry tart) was tasteless and unpleasant to eat. I left half of it on the plate. It was a pleasant evening, the food was nicely served in a pleasant, simple ambiance, which seemed a lot more convivial upstairs than the small downstairs area. I would go there again only during Restaurant Week. I look forward to the return of La Bergerie, owned by the same company.
