Del Ray Cafe
Outstanding Foie gras and Brussels sprouts. And the dog liked the treats when we got home.
Nadir and team made us feel welcomed and provided stellar service. We cannot wait to return!
We were fortunate to choose Del Ray Cafe for a Valentine's Eve dinner this year. As always, the room is pleasant and comfortable. The menu -- both the special V Day menu and the regular a la carte version -- was creative and inviting. All dishes were well-prepared and worth trying again. Above all, our waiter Nadir was attentive, engaged, warm and very customer-friendly. We will return.
This is second time we've eaten here. The first time was wonderful however this time was much worse. Firstly the service was much worse that the first time. Our waiter seemed to be bossy and ordering other servers who were trying to help us around. They originally brought out the wrong food, and were quick to correct it. Then when it came time to pay, we made clear that we wanted to split the bill using cash and a card. Instead they charged the whole bill to the card and took the cash as a tip. We asked them to correct this and they still haven't. Unfortunately we won't be dining here again until this issue has been corrected and we get our money back ($79 in cash is a bit of a hefty tip given a meal total of $116). I get that sometime's you're busy, but the service shouldn't suffer that much, and they should correct the issue with the bill immediately.
Food was really good. Parking is very difficult. Looks like a made over house in a neighborhood.
Consistent great, friendly service in a relaxing environment. 'Did I mention the food is very good, too?
This neighborhood hood gem is a couple steps away from being truly great. Food and service are excellent, it’s just the ambience is more diner than bistro; and the food is definitely French Bistro fare. A better wine selection, little ambience tweak and they would really be wowing you. Do not take this as negative criticism, just an observation. I will definitely be back, and happy to be so.
The five of us enjoyed our time and meal at Del Ray Cafe. We shared mussels and a suffle among us but each ordered a different entree. The osso buco was a favorite as well as the scallops and lobster risotto. The ham/cheese crepe was delicious as well as the braised ribs. The service was quick but not rushed and we lingered over our conversation as we caught up with each other. So lucky we can walk to this great restaurant!
I had venison stew, my companions had lamb shank and the daily special seared salmon, plus cocktails and beer. The food, service and value were excellent.
Birthday treat was beautiful / thanks
Venison was delicious and a treat!
DC spring salad with pears was fantastic too!
They messed up our order, but made it right in the end. The short ribs were encased in fat and served medium rare which was a surprise. Our experience with short ribs is they are usually cooked through rendering most of the fat out.
I love this place. Wonderful setting, and I go occasionally for business breakfasts. I dinged it (4 stars rather than 5) for one sole reason: on weekdays it seems to be the place to bring very young children, and the crying and rap-rap-rapping of objects on the table can make it hard to converse. This is no knock on the restaurant -- seems like an ideal place for families. Just hard to do a business breakfast upstairs in that environment.
Everything here is exquisite. This comfortable French cafe looks like a home from the street. When you're inside you're family to the gracious, knowledgeable and highly skillled and experienced staff. Close your eyes, point to the menu, and order it. It will be excellent. She had the French onion soup. I had the potato leek soup. We both ordered the lamb chops special, followed by the delicate, flaky apple tart. Our server was expert in the wine list - not a long list, mostly French, sufficient variety of types and prices - and helped me pick a 2014 Bordeaux that matched perfectly.
Very fine for a slightly out-of-the way and memorable business lunch or dinner. And if you want to enjoy a meal with a special someone in your life, here's your spot. But don't go too often because we'll want a table.
We are regulars. One of the best restaurants in Alexandria.
We go to Del Ray Cafe once a month or more and I decided to have brunch there on my birthday. The staff was very welcoming and friendly as usual and the food was outstanding as usual. I had fried oysters Benedict; the oysters were perfectly done and did not overpower the dish, on the contrary they paired well with the hollandaise, croissant and poached eggs. If you live in the Del Ray/Alexandria area and haven’t visited Del Ray Cafe you are missing out on a meal with a comfortable and intimate setting and ambiance, friendly and helpful staff, and exciting and delicious food.
Restaurant week menu - always a favorite, with solid veg options for our guests! Delicious food, superb service.
Del Ray Cafe has limited seating. Despite having 3 weeks advance reservation, we were stuck on a side porch. If you're going to have to spend over $200 for a dinner for four, you expect better accommodations.
Really enjoyed our dinner. It was a Friday during restaurant week so they were a bit behind on fulfilling reservations. But ok nce we were seated, service was terrific, food was fresh and nicely presented. Salad with bleu cheese a nd apples was great starter as was my husband's French onion soup. Our 3 entrees of venison, beef tenderloin and branzino filet were all wonderful and properly cooked to temp we requested. We overdid by having dessert. Greatness.
Enjoyed a good meal and setting. Great for catching up with friends. Excellent service and food.
Nice place. Went for rest week. Very good food and lots of choices
Well-priced menu. Service very slow. Good neighborhood restaurant.
I have never really had a bad meal at Del Ray Cafe. My biggest complaint is it smells and seems a little smoky from the kitchen. One of my top picks in the area.
DelRay Cafe never disappoints! It is always excellent!
We came during Restaurant Week, everything was outstanding! Will definitely come back!
Willing to go extra mile and add extra chocolate in the profiteroles. Tables close together in room downstairs so felt lack of privacy.
All had the restaurant week menu. Everything was exceptionally well thought out, prepared and presented.
Although found the hangar tenderloin a little chewy.
Love this restaurant and will return whenever we can.
The food here is always special and the Restaurant Week choices are delicious.
Service and food were very good. Delicious bronzini, with well prepared veggies. Servers were most attentive (but still need to learn not to interrupt guest's conversations). The noise level was a bit high, but that's the acoustics of the place and can't be helped. Del Ray Cafe is one of our regular haunts and will remain so.
This is our favorite restaurant. I have never been disappointed there. Restaurant Week is a great time to try dishes one hasn't had before.
Such a quaint and cute spot! My husband and I went during restaurant week as a date and had a great time! The food and service was so good! Will definitely go back for sure. If you are in Del Ray, this is a MUST TRY!
Some good flavors, but we weren't wowed.
It was restaurant week, offering plenty of choices for each of the 3 courses.
Salad was fine - a bit acidic, but fine. The pate was adequate. They forgot to bring the bread with it, so we had to ask.
The short rib was very good - would order that again. The branzino with olive tapenade and a light sauce - not so much. when the waiter asks to be sure you want the tapenade, even though it's a core element of the dish - you know there's a problem. The flavors just didn't complement one another well. And both entrees had undercooked and uninteresting half-carrot and clump of broccoli - not even a squeeze of lemon juice or something to brighten it up. I love crunch in my vegetables - but these we just uninteresting, uninspired and not worth their presence on the plate.
Finally, for dessert we ordered creme brulee and profiteroles. The latter was fine - nothing to write home about. The creme brulee was completely uninspired. The crust was barely there, and the flavor was very flat.
Staff were friendly. Ambience is nice. But if it's a nice french meal I'm looking for, I'll go elsewhere.
Food took a longer than usual to get to our table. The short ribs were good but a little cold inside. The green beans were overcooked. The creme brûlée wasn’t set properly. Not bad but on that price range there are better French food options.
My salmon was perfectly cooked and so delicious! The bread is extraordinary. Did I mention how wonderful the servers are? Always friendly and helpful but not hovering.
Del Ray Café is my favorite restaurant!!!
Outstanding food, and we'll be back to try it again. Had the Diver scallops and Dover sole, plus the Burgundy Snails appetizer. However, although the outside patio room seating would be good for brunch on a nice day, it provided a very disappointing atmosphere for an upscale dinner of this cost.
Always the best. You won’t find better calamari in town!
Promptly seated. The wait staff was very helpful and attentive without being too intrusive. The food (eggplant and portobello tart appetizer, lobster entree, scallop entree, and shared souffle dessert) were all excellent. The house chardonnay was nothing exceptional but could be a way to economize a bit as most of the bottle wine choices are a bit pricey. That said, the higher priced glasses we ordered at the wait staff's suggestion were very good.
I just love eating here. Everything on the menu is thoughtfully prepared, high quality, and delicious. And the service is always exceptional.
DRC continues to be my favorite restaurant! We made reservations kind of last-minute but were rewarded with fabulous food including my favorite dessert special, Floating Island. I haven't seen this dessert for years and have always had to go to New York to get it. The food is always outstanding!
