Declaration Ratings and Reviews
Like many others, we wanted dinner before catching a show at the 9:30 across the street. If this is your plan, then reservations are a must. We were seated within a few minutes of our reservation time and saw a lot of other parties going on a waiting list or looking elsewhere. Because everyone's there before going to a show, they all arrive at around the same time, which means the servers are in the weeds; while friendly and polite, the service was waaaaaay too slow. Noise levels also quite high-- hard to have a conversation.
The food was really good; nice chewy crust on the pizza, and high quality ingredients. Perhaps a touch too much lemon in the Caesar dressing, and personally I'd like to see a bit more selection in the starters (with 7 starters, do two really need to be devilled eggs?). But what they do, they do very well--- the mac and cheese is pretty awesome (just weird to have mac and cheese before pizza).
Great drinks menu, good beer selection.
We'll be back, although if we want a more "interactive" dining experience, we'll come on a night when the 9:30 is dark.
We went to Declaration before a show at the 9:30 club. Our reservation increased from 2 to 3 last minute, which was our fault, and the manager did everything he could to accommodate us! The service was fantastic and so was the food. An order of the mac and cheese is a must! I highly recommend for dinner and drinks and I'm already looking forward to the next time we go!
This was my second visit to Declaration's Restaurant. I am very pleased and look forward to the quality and distinction of this restaurant! Amazing choice!!! Our waiter, John, was extremely helpful and made our quick bite feel as though we were at a private home!
The cocktails were delicious and we put our food order in soon after we got there. Another table sat down and ordered about 10 minutes after us. That table started receiving food, which I thought were appetizers at first, about 20 minutes after their order. I soon realized that was their full dinner. It had been an hour since our arrival and still no food. The waiter asked how we were doing and we both said “Hungry!” He flipped through his book and said “I did put your order in ri.... I’ll be right back!” He went off to the kitchen, said the food will be right out and, magically, 10 minutes our food arrived.
I’m not a complainer but we were waiting at least 45 minutes for our food. Every other moderately good establishment will offer comps, without the customer having to ask. It’s sad the only way you get reconciliations is to complain and make a scene. It was very clear our order was forgotten and no apologies or attempts to reconcile were made. It seemed like they were trying to sweep everything under the rug.
Plus, the pizza was mediocre for the price. The cocktails were definitely delicious though!
Our server was great! Very personable and knowledgeable, and he made some good recommendations. For starters we had the meatball (so delicious!) and the cavatelli mac & cheese. The meatball is the size of a tennis ball, so it's definitely something to share. We shared a pizza and the brownie sundae dessert. Everything was delicious! We were visiting from out of state but would definitely return on another visit.
Is there a way to love and dislike a place at the same time?!? Declaration is such a great place and the people are amazing. It gets a bit noisy and the kitchen can get backed up sometimes but overall great. However, the food is all over the place; pizza is hit or miss... like I literally ordered two pizzas and one was amazing and the other was not very good. The Caesar’s salad tastes like you are sucking on a lemon and yet the entrees are decent. Chef sounds a bit full of him/herself, whenever something is wrong “that is how we meant it to taste” is the response from the kitchen. Wish they would rein in the kitchen as this should be a pre 930 club visit regularly.
The pizzas were previously priced at 17.76 in continuity with their 13 original colonies and American history theme. Though now, the pizza's are 18.76 and while just $1 more expensive, it takes away from the overall coolness of the restaurant. A great location and an awesome feel, nevertheless.
The food was just ok. However, the thing that stood out for me was that two meals were brought out, followed by a third. And then while we all stared at our plates waiting for the fourth one, we had to ask the waiter to bring it so we could all eat at the same time. I thought this was an odd delivery of the meal. Isn't it common restaurant practice to bring everything out at the same time?
My boyfriend and I came here on a date. We love pizza and are from Ohio so we wanted to try pizza in DC area. The design of the restaurant was cool, and things were themed. I thought the pizza was good, nothing too special though. They do have "out of the box" pizzas, as well as other menu items that sounded equally as delicious. The dessert we got was AMAZING. I am a huge chocolate lover so I really enjoyed it.
We'd been excited about going here for a couple months. We decided to grab a 7:30p for a Saturday date night, and couldn't have been happier. Brussels for an app and then one of the excellent pizza choices from the 13 colony theme. The pizza was excellent, but Declaration's great concept just makes it all that much better. There are little hits of the theme no matter where you look, whether to the menu, drink list, prices, decor, or fun fact from a server. It really makes the experience that much more worthwhile. Our server, John, was ideal. Perfectly attentive, but not overbearing. He was engaging and full of personality. We were checked on by the manager as well, who was equally as engaging and really accommodating.
We will absolutely be back, and probably several times. I hear their brunch is great too...
Chose this restaurant because it is right across from the movie theater. The ingredient list for each item of food would make you think it is going to be tasty. However, the food is bland and salt isn't enough to fix it. Stale popcorn would have been better. Won't be going back.
Lackluster food in great location, space, and service. For the ambiance and style of the restaurant, I was expecting better food. Went for brunch and the best dish is their pizza (which is their main attraction). It was good, but there is better pizza in the area (e.g. Bacio). The French toast was delicious, but the fried chicken it came with was only OK. The bloody Mary was a tad too spicy for my taste, the beet salad was wilted, and the burger was bland. I might go back for drinks and pizza because it's close by, but it's nothing special.
Was meeting up with a friend I hadn't seen in years and needed to find a place conviently located for both of us that was also new, etc. After searching on Open Table, Declaration seemed to fit the bill. The location is great, the ambience is nice, the staff is very nice/attentive, and the menu has many choices. That said the overall experience was terrific minus the food itself. We ordered a bunch of different things including appetizers, entrees, pizza, and dessert. The flavors and textures were not quite right on any of the items. I was very disappointed. As a result, I cannot recommend Declaration and have mentioned this to several people that asked me how it was. Please note that I'm not the type to write negative reviews like this.
The apps were great, the pizza was pretty good. The service was horrible. It took over 45 minutes for our 13" pizza to come after we placed the order. The waitress had clearly forgotten to put the order in and then did not admit her mistake or offer us anything comped on our check. Also we missed the beginning of the movie we were seeing after dinner because of the bad service. Probably not going again.
This was my second time at Declaration. I love the historic theme, including that all specialty pizzas are 17.76. The pizzas themselves are delicious, and our server was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.
One thing I will say is that the selection of pizzas was much better the first time I went (May of 2016). This most recent time in March of 2017, they had changed some of the specialty pizzas. Most surprisingly, the only meat toppings available were pork, either on the specialty pizzas or the make your own pizzas. There was no chicken or 100% beef options (we were told the meatballs were half pork and half beef). I was able to get one of the specialty pizzas without pork, and it was delicious. Nonetheless, that was pretty surprising to me that the toppings were so limited. After all, the founding fathers certainly ate beef and chicken!
Was looking for a good gluten free pizza...disappointed. Ordered a couple salads and they were pretty salty. Also 2 of the 3 pizzas came incorrectly so we all ate at different times. Ambiance is good and the service was good but wasn't impressed with the food really, just meh.
Consistently mediocre. The pizza here is touted by the servers as being 'light', which really just means the crust is dry as a bone. Unfortunately they mix decent toppings with a cracker-like crust, making for a dusty mouthful every time. I dined here with two others and we ordered 3 pizzas, 3 appetizers and the Brussels sprouts salad. The appetizers (deviled eggs, cheese + garlic bread, and bruschetta) were all about a 3.5/5 stars. The Brussels sprouts salad was chopped and tasty. Service was not great; even though it was early and the restaurant empty the server was rushed and didn't seem to want to provide actual service, just take our orders and rush off. Questions about the menu elicited responses such as "I don't ever eat that so I wouldn't know," when she could have offered to find out. It cost about $115 for 3 people, so it wasn't cheap. Next time I want gourmet pizza and apps I'll go to 2 Amy's.
We got one the cauliflower for an appetizer and it was delicious! The homemade vanilla soda was also very good. We split a pizza for an entree, and it was pretty good. The crust was a little dry and we couldn't taste either the honey or chili oil that were in the description. Also the drinks were too pricey, $15 dollar cocktails is ridiculous...i don't care what you put in them. The happy hour deals didn't make it much better. $5 for a beer and $8 for a cocktail is still not really a bargain in my opinion. Overall i would say the experience was pretty good.
Fabulous! One of the best meals I've had in awhile. The starters were so creative and delicious. Twists on roasted cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, bruschetta.... The pizza was delicious. Chewy thin bread crust, perfectly cooked. Not greasy at all. Ingredients tasted fresh. Will be back undoubtably.
