de Medici Cucina Italiana Ratings and Reviews
This place may have been very good 20 years ago. I did enjoy their food which, besides the old twice-baked potatoes was tasty and compently prepared. However, at the top level prices I paid for their best dishes , and the available alternatives in the sandiego scene, you'd be foolish to go here. The service was earnest but very young. The ambience was so very tired and in need of paint. Having a tour bus loitering outside with engines running made it feel like a Greyhound bus station. A bottle of champagne allowed us to enjoy our experience of dates American Italian cuisine, but honestly I'd leave it to the tourists. If the owners want to compete for locals, they need to put some money into the front of house.
What a jewel! A bit higher up in the gaslamp district of San Diego, de Medici welcomes you with the ambiance of an old Italian home. Old photos cover the walls and line the shelves, graceful chandeliers spread a warm glow over the room, and semi-circular booth tables a harken back to a golden age. Bring an open mind and an empty stomach
You won’t be disappointed.
Restaurant Week brought us in as well as a strong recommendation from my son. Disappointing, will not go again. Nice interior but the staff was not very attentive in that during the meal, I started to pour the specially ordered Pellagrino water, then a person came over. I ordered 2 items during the initial drink order; a prosecco and a Chardonnay. Both again during our meal I started to pour, then a waiter came over to finish pouring for us and guests. We were in a booth closest to the kitchen, no excuse. Two of the four of us ordered “The House Special” top meal of fish stuffed with shrimp, etc was not impressed, portion was large, but lacked flavor and was served cold. The other two guests were vegans and had a very limited selection that we could have made ourselves. Did still leave a 20+ percent tip but it was not deserved. At one point I jested to Sarceno, our waiter, that I was going to get part of his tip since I was performing part of his servicing in a joking way, however, it didn’t change his attentiveness. Too bad . Desserts were great as was the cappuccino so we finished on a good note shaking Sarceno’s hand on the way out. Nice mints upon leaving helped to round out the exit.
The Calamari Fritti was delicious, cooked perfectly so that the calamari was very tender. It was served with marinara sauce for a perfect pairing and was generous enough for 2 to share. We ordered the Sole Portofino for our main dish. It was beautifully presented with the sole covering a seafood medley of shrimp, crab and lobster with exquisite flavor.
Service started out great but once we were served It appears Sarceno forgot about us and so did the other servers because husband to get up to look for someone to refill our water. In addition, my husband rated his steak at 2 1/2 stars and his lobster was over cooked.
Owner was really nice and tentative, but the waiter was the opposite, im sure he noticed i hardly ate my meal because i didn't like it yet he didn't bother to ask if there was an issue with it, he just took my plate. the drinks were really good though and my girlfriend did at least like her food.
A noted above all was good. The only real nick on the evening was the cork fee. We were told upon arrival by Katy, after showing her our wine bottle that it was a $25.00 cork fee. Quite high, but as we were doing a double anniversary we let it pass. When we received our bill we were charged $50.00 and told because the bottle was a bit larger than normal it was double. When I complained, the server said he was sorry. It left a nick on an otherwise great night. Also, we had to ask for tea, coffee, water, and plate take away constantly.
The best Italian food I’ve ever had. Both our pastas were super delicious and the champagne was great. The owner was super friendly and always made sure to check on guests. PLUS It was nice to see that all the pasta recipes came straight from his mother. Super authentic and lovely.
This is a beautiful restaurant that makes you feel taken care of with its very ample, comfortable seating, soft light, and elegant atmosphere. The food is solid and good but can use more imagination. It is a little too predictable, and one wishes for more panache in a restaurant in this price range. The service was also less solicitous than one would expect. They forgot to bring one desert and pointed out instead of apologizing they pointed out that they brought the second desert we ordered, which was not the point. All in all, it seems that they are getting a little complacent about their food and service and need more polish in both.
Food tastes great. Service depends on which waiter you get. Our waiter did not tell us about hidden charges with adding a sauce to a meal. Owner is great but some of his waiters should be coached on telling patrons upfront if there are additional charges for certain sauces or side additions.
