As USUAL, excellent in all categories; from the greeting at the entrance, to our gracious hostess seating us at our favorite booth, to the farewell at the exit. Juan delivered outstanding service and excellent wine suggestions. The Cioppino Marechiaro and Sole Portofino (which I selected this time over the always savory Osso Bucco; and perhaps because the Portofino was my usual choice at the former Star of the Sea) were again excellent. Juan's selection of Tenuta Castiglioni was very drinkable. Everyone was very attentive but not intrusive. Always excellent; we return as often as possible when we are downtown. Wonderful evening.
Went on Sunday at 515pm, was not crowded and they had our reservation from this app. Great food, I had the Scampi Vesuvio and Blue Cheese Lettuce Wedge and my girlfriend had the Pollo alla Marsala, we both really liked what we ordered. The hostess who greeted us was friendly and our waiter was very attentive and informative about the menu. We waited awhile for our food but liked that because it felt they took time to prepare our food. We were there about 2 hours and never felt rushed to leave. We Would recommend this restaurant and would go back again.
We had an excellent meal. My wife had the Filet Mignon and I had the 16 oz NY York Steak. The meat was delicious. The wines were also reasonably priced. Overall, the meal was on definitely equal if not better than some very high end restaurants we have gone to in NYC.
The ambiance is really great but the food was really just so so. Wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend.
This is a small and elegant restaurant with wonderful food. The service was great and we really enjoyed the experience. The sole stuffed with crab, shrimp and lobster was fantastic.
Great old-school Italian in the Gas Lamp district. Our family of 4 dined there during a brief visit in San Diego. It was highly recommended and they did not disappoint. All of the classic Italian dishes are available. Portions are large and they will accommodate your wishes. Sauce is sweet and fresh tasting. We highly recommend the table-side Caesar salad, the house specialty Stuffed Sole, and the Pasta Bolognese. The servers are experienced, friendly and very attentive.
Food was very expensive for the quality. Calamari is one of my favorite things, but theirs was so overdone I almost couldn’t eat it. It was like breaded rubber bands.
The pasta was good, but adding shrimp added $15, for 4 shrimp. They were also slightly overdone.
The food was fantastic. Cannelloni with seafood as an appetizer was divine. The veal chop was the best I ever had. The veal saltimbocca was very well prepared. Dessert of cannoli was a bit of a disappointment in that the shell was too hard but the filling was very tasty. We had a problem with the service. Our waiter was also assigned to a party of what seemed like well over 20 people. As such, he didn't attend to our table as frequently as would be expected. Management should take this into consideration. Would definitely go back.
We came to this restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. We were greeted by the staff who were very nice. Our waiter Berfilio, however was very unprofessional. He came over and was a bit curt and tried to break the ice by asking us if we wanted to do shots. I was very surprised by this comment as this is or was supposed to be a very nice restaurant and we were there for a nice dinner. We were trying to make light of this and just laughed and went with it. We didn’t order shots but we did order martinis. Berfilio tried to upsell
us every step of the way and once our food was delivered to the table, he never came back. There were not that many other guests so it couldn’t be that he was busy. If anything, it felt as though we didn’t meet his expectations of high end food items ordered perhaps. We did order several appetizers and entrees as well as premium vodka for our martinis. I found it odd that our glasses seemed so much bigger than other guests who had similar cocktails. We ordered one more martini but he brought two and made a snide remark about taking one off our bill so we just kept both and couldn’t even finish them. Once we received our bill I saw that what we were charged for large martinis. We were never given the option of small or large. If anything we believe we were taken advantage of by this waiter and his snobbery. The rest of the staff were so wonderful. Food was just okay. Have had better Italian food from frozen meals. We won’t be back! Not worth the $170
Our dinner was for a group of 7 and they seated us at a wonderful table for conversation. Some of the diners nearby were very loud. While the food was delicious and the service was wonderful, the prices make this an occasional restaurant only for most of us.
What a wonderful experience ! The food, service and ambiance were outstanding. My husband and I were on a getaway weekend and wanted a quiet place with good food - and we certainly found it. We will make it a destination dinner place on our next visit.
Good food. Extra great service. Great classic Ratpack ambiance. Bread needs work. Especially with the better than average food
Sal and his staff were great! You must dine there when you’re in the Gaslamp
Get the table side Caesar salad and filet of sole. Yum
Fabulous meal and ambience!
I have had Italian food all over the world but this is the best. Have the Veal Parmigiana! It is out of this world. If possible ask for Juan. He is a 22 year veteran and makes an amazing table side Caesar salad.
great booth seating + great service + exceptional Italian food = delighted customer. thank you and see you soon!
Although the reviews considered this an outstanding restaurant for San Diego, we found it only average. The menu was not particularly exciting, and the preparation was just so-so. Additionally, the Caesar salad made table side lacked anchovies and eggs.
Had early reservations before a theater event. Five of us ate there, and each loved her meal! Great wine suggestion, too. I will gladly return!
Can’t say enough. Drive from No. County at least every few months to enjoy a special dinner out!!!
The foid is very nice, I love it!!
The place is good, agradável!!
It was Valentines Day and I decided to take my family there for a special dinner. It was our first time there and we all really enjoyed it. I had the Lobster Ravioli and it was great! It’s definitely a must go to restaurant and I will be visiting again.
Quintessential family owned restaurant. Mother’s recipes...great food...exceptional service!
We enjoy going here for special occasions. Service and food is superb.
This place may have been very good 20 years ago. I did enjoy their food which, besides the old twice-baked potatoes was tasty and compently prepared. However, at the top level prices I paid for their best dishes , and the available alternatives in the sandiego scene, you'd be foolish to go here. The service was earnest but very young. The ambience was so very tired and in need of paint. Having a tour bus loitering outside with engines running made it feel like a Greyhound bus station. A bottle of champagne allowed us to enjoy our experience of dates American Italian cuisine, but honestly I'd leave it to the tourists. If the owners want to compete for locals, they need to put some money into the front of house.
Most delicious meals! Every dish is cooked to perfection!
What a jewel! A bit higher up in the gaslamp district of San Diego, de Medici welcomes you with the ambiance of an old Italian home. Old photos cover the walls and line the shelves, graceful chandeliers spread a warm glow over the room, and semi-circular booth tables a harken back to a golden age. Bring an open mind and an empty stomach
You won’t be disappointed.
Awesome authentic Italian food. Attentive service. Will be back!
The food and service was outstanding
Tired old Italian restaurant needs fresher ingredients and menu.
Our waiter was a delight & his service was excellent. Went for restaurant week menu and we were very happy with the choices and our selections based on our waiter’s recommendation.
Best sole portofino.
This was out 2nd visit. We absolutely love de Medici. The lasagna is amazing. The lobster bisque was by far the best we've ever ordered. If you come do not miss the stuffed sole. It is the signature dish.
Restaurant Week brought us in as well as a strong recommendation from my son. Disappointing, will not go again. Nice interior but the staff was not very attentive in that during the meal, I started to pour the specially ordered Pellagrino water, then a person came over. I ordered 2 items during the initial drink order; a prosecco and a Chardonnay. Both again during our meal I started to pour, then a waiter came over to finish pouring for us and guests. We were in a booth closest to the kitchen, no excuse. Two of the four of us ordered “The House Special” top meal of fish stuffed with shrimp, etc was not impressed, portion was large, but lacked flavor and was served cold. The other two guests were vegans and had a very limited selection that we could have made ourselves. Did still leave a 20+ percent tip but it was not deserved. At one point I jested to Sarceno, our waiter, that I was going to get part of his tip since I was performing part of his servicing in a joking way, however, it didn’t change his attentiveness. Too bad . Desserts were great as was the cappuccino so we finished on a good note shaking Sarceno’s hand on the way out. Nice mints upon leaving helped to round out the exit.
The signature dish of Sole was delicious! So was the lobster bisque and dessert. Was a lovely atmosphere and great service. I would go back for sure!
We had a wonderful meal with excellent service. This was a short walk from the theatre and so very convenient.
