Dawson's Too - Sticks & Stones Ratings and Reviews
This was our second visit to Dawson's Too and my wife and I ordered the same as before -- the Seafood Trio. It is very good but I thought the tuna was a little under seasoned this time.
We were celebrating my wife's birthday with our daughter, son-in-law and two preschool grandchildren. All enjoyed their meals.
They comp'ed us a brownie with ice cream and whipped cream.
Although our waitress was very nice, she took too long to take our drink order. It appeared that there not enough servers. I sent my tuna sandwich back because it wasn't cooked as I ordered. When it was brought back, there was no lettuce, tomato or ciabatta bun as described on the menu. My husband was disappointed in his tuna dinner because it lacked flavor.
Dawson's is one of the two higher end restaurants in Brownsburg and they have excellent pizzas. Our experience this time was in the middle of our past experiences. Steve is a hard working guy but he had more than he could do that night and made a few mistakes. First, when he took our drink orders we also asked for an appetizer. He brought the drinks back, took our main order, and then scurried away. We didn't see him again for 15 minutes at which time our main meals arrived. Ok, so he forgot to put in our appetizer and it wasn't on the bill. It wasn't what we wanted but no harm done. He made brief appearances to check on us after that and then brought boxes and the check. We had to ask three times to get the cookie for our daughter that comes with the meal (once when he asked if we were ready for the check, once when he brought the check, and once when we were ready to walk out the door). It's a good place but they need to hire more wait staff to keep guys like Steve from getting overworked (because then they make mistakes).
Our Valentine’s Date Reservations started off well, parking lot was full but the hostess was polite and sat us right away. Within a few minutes however the announcer for "Trivia Night" queue his mike and was able to be heard throughout the whole restaurant. This continued throughout the entire dinner and was very disruptive. Looking around the room I can say that 8 other gentlemen shared my opinion. Not what you want to hear while reading the special Valentine’s Day specials.
We order a bottle of wine which was brought to the table by our server with the Cork already opened. She then proceeded to sit the bottle on the table with two glasses and walked away; leaving us to pour the wine ourselves. Ordered salad and entrees, which were both well prepared, food had good flavor and came out in a timely manner. Ordered dessert, brownie sundae, which was brought to the table by another employee, not our server. 10 minutes later we were finally able to flag down the manager to ask for spoons to eat the brownie, as our dirty silverware was removed with our empty plates. By that time the ice cream had mostly melted.
We will likely stick to the Main Street Speedway Dawson's in the future when we decide to dine with this company again.
We went for first time for Valentines Day. Got right in with open table reservation. Good Beer selection and had a special since it was Tuesday. I went with the Fountain Square Preachers Daughter, it was so good I put away 3 pints. Wife had a glass of pino gritio and a shrimp pasta dish. She commented on the quality of the wine as compared to the small grocery store bottles she is accustomed to. Pasta dish was good but she was a bit overwhelmed with the sauce. I went with the basic tenderloin. It was good and less greasy than most as this is the nature of the sandwich. We started with the chicken nacho appetizer for $6 on early bird menu. Definitely different than your typical nachos, loaded with grilled onions and peppers similar to fajitas. Quality and quantity of chicken was excellent, could have used more tortilla chips. Portions were large and we took home a carryout which my son took for his lunch the next day. I will definitely return, likely on a Tuesday for the beer specials and early bird menu.
In the past we've had troubles with service but lately it has been much better. The food is generally very good but this it was only okay. I was also disappointed that they had no fruit as a side option. It's really easy to have grapes or applesauce but alas they only have fruit when it is in season. I did enjoy the fish special which was a nice change of pace from the pizza I usually get there. The rest of my party was not impressed. We'll be back for every day dining but not for a special occasion.
We have eaten here several times and the food has never disappointed us. We typically like to sit in the bar area as there are several TV's to watch. So I requested that we be seated in the bar area. Which, as it turns out, was a big mistake. We were seated in one of the booths along the side of the bar that faces the parking lot. There was COLD air blowing out of the vents above our heads. My daughter, who typically is too warn, had to eat her dinner with her coat on. Very difficult to enjoy the food when it's that cold. I did say something to our waitress and she said we weren't the first to complain, that they had called the service people several times, and so far they have not been able to fix it. We will eat there again but will make sure we aren't seated in that area. The waitress told us the other side of the room was very comfortable and that is where I will request that we be seated next time.
The management of this restaurant put the emphasis where it belongs -- on you plate.
The bar area was full of Indianapolis Colts fans, watching the team play in London. They were quite noisy. We were seated in the main dining room but the walls do not go to the ceiling so we heard a lot of noise. The hostess seated us in the best spot possible to avoid the noise.
(They also have large dining rooms for groups that are not subject to that noise.)
The location is not high end and they did not put much money into the decor. They did invest in good restrooms and our server told us the kitchen was immaculate. As a customer, those are wise choices.
We each had the seafood trio priced at $20 a plate, not bad if the seafood is good. The trio included a crab cake which I would rate as one of the better ones that I have had. Sea scallops were nicely prepared and not overcooked. Seldom do we ever get asked how we want our fish cooked and even more seldom are they asking for the doneness. We had our tuna medium rare, leaning toward the rare side. It was prepared exceptionally well.
The quality of the food and preparation could demand a much higher price than $20.
We love the atmosphere in the bar and always make a reservation for a high top table. They always have our reservation and have never waited more than a few minutes. I would saw we have eaten there 2 5+ times.
The last few times there has not been enough wait staff. We waited an extended period for the table to be greeted. I finally went to the bar and ordered a round for the table. As a rule of thumb a server should have 4-6 tables. Having one server for the bar area or having the bartenders taking table orders on a Friday night is not best practice.
