that serves an eclectic array of interesting dishes.
Nothing compared to the old Dawat restaurant from the past.
Delicious ! Quality food and excellent service
It was a disappointing experience all around.
Food was mediocre, waiters not attentive.
Brought the bill before we were not done!!
Some creative recipes, good service. Spinach fritters were a little disappointing, bland.
We had a great time! Enjoyed the food and ambience. Our waiter VIKAS was very good, very attentive. Thank you!
One of the signature dishes is a whole fish prepared Tandoori style. It was the most boring piece of fish. The muligatwny soup was puréed. Both dishes were hard to consume so I didn’t. Highly overrated overall.
We were visiting NYC, and treated my wife's step-mother to an authentic Indian dinner. She had lived in India and Pakistan, and was delighted with the variety and the authenticity of the dishes. I cook recipes from Madhur Jaffrey's books, and this was about my sixth visit. It was a bit boisterous around our table, as there was a large party with kids celebrating something at the next table, but we all enjoyed the meal. Whenever I come to NYC, I always go for the Cornish Game Hen in Green Chillies, and request it authentically spiced (pretty hot!)
Celebrating my sister
Horrible Service! Good way too spicy
We were first at the restaurant for a 5:30 p.m. reservation and needed to leave by 6:45 for the theater. The food was exceptionally well prepared and the service suited out schedule. The restaurant was quiet although we can't say how it is when full of diners. We know great food although we are not foodies. Dawat deserves your business.
At lunch apart from one other table the place was empty. It became apparent when the food was served, that no one wanted to eat there for good reason. The half warmed up offerings were tasteless and not worth eating.
Very disappointing food, indifferent service. No wonder it’s empty at lunch time.
Reservation was easy to do and we were having friends with us. Tried tasting menu, separately ordered for drinks and green tea. Yum!
The best Indian restaurant in New York.
Delicious food + beverages! The serving staff was wonderful & brought out a dessert with a candle for my mother's birthday. Great place for a special occasion.
Food was very good but service was not at all elegant for a place which is supposed to be one of the top 12-15 in NYC for Indian food; plus it has 'haute' in its name. Doesn't live up to it.
The place was surprisingly not full for a late Saturday evening since we had settled for this as 3rd-4th choice that evening. Not sure why. Maybe the late hour explained the rather basic service attitude.
I love Madhur Jaffrey so getting to go to her restaurant was amazing! We got saag paneer and chicken tikka masala and both were so good! The naan and the rice were great too but you have to order the rice! I had a really good glass of rose while I was there as well! I made a reservation for a Saturday night, but it's not neccessary! Mindy Kaling said this is her favorite indian restaurant in NYC!
Went to lunch with 2 friends. All of say we will be back soon as we had a very tasty lunch with very good service. The lunch specials are a great bargain. It may be more crowded at dinner but was pretty empty for us as we went for a 1:30 lunch. My friends eat out a lot and can be "difficult" but both were very pleased. If you are in the Bloomingdale's area, I recommend you eat here as it is a much better value than most of the area's restaurants. But--be sure to ask for the lunch special menu as it might not otherwise be offered.
This was business dinner with one guest from India. Vegan options were available and the food was good.
The noise level was low allowing a comfortable ambiance for a business event.
Food not as good previous few times. Service slow.
Terrific lunch special with many options, delicious food
I went to Dawat for years, but not in the last year..it declined in food significantly..that was my last time
A fine menu, conceived by Madhur Jaffrey, a pioneering voice of Indian food...warm service, and dishes one can find no where else in New York.
Food was not very tasty. It was OK. Service was good. When asked for Indian Chai, we were informed that the kitchen was closed. It was 3 PM.
I went here to meet with two friends after work. Service was impeccable and the food was quite good. Highly recommend the Biryani.
Always good service, excellent food and comfortable environment.
My wife and I gave been going to this restaurant for years. Somethings changed here. The food was not very good. Lacked flavor and freshness . The service was awful. No one smiled, no one was happy. It was nit an off night it was a total change. We will not be going back. To bad it eas once a really fine dinning experience.
Three old friends getting together! Friendly surroundings, good service, excellent food. We enjoyed ourselves very much.
Dat is very expensive! they should have a prix fix or be a little more special. Pretty restaurant. But a little tired in decor.
The restaurant was too hot because they set the A/C too high until a later hour when more people arrived. We asked for cooler air and were told it was set as cool as it would go. NOT TRUE. They just did not want to lower it for us because it was just our table and one other table.
The food portions have also been reduced.
Good food but a little too much salt or flavor enhancements.
Food was very good but extremely overpriced for what it was.
I just love this place. They always make great recommendations and the food is incredible. The staff is accommodating and very friendly!
Have ate at Dawat many times. This time the food was not as good as on previous visits. My tandoori chicken was overdone/dry.
We have been visiting this elegant Indian restaurant in our neighborhood for at least 10 years. We have never been disappointed. It is clean, elegant, quiet and the staff is always friendly and attentive. The food is wonderful and always delicious. We have never had anything less than an excellent meal here. I highly recommend this excellent restaurant.
Food was excellent. Service was exemplary. We highly recommend the restaurant.
Used to be great. Not anymore. Looked forward to sarson ka saag—was awful.
We were the only people there. Our reservation was for 2:15 and at 2:00 they called and asked when we would be there. Green beans tasted like the freezer and were barely cooked. Meat and chicken dishes lacked meat and were mostly sauce, even if the sauces were tasty. Expensive. Won’t go again
We first went to Dawat when we were dating and later announced our engagement to our parents there 17 years ago. We then loved in various places around the country and in other countries. The place looks exactly as it did back then. Food and service is still outstanding. They do need to renovate though, it looks a bit tired.
