that serves an eclectic array of interesting dishes.
I just love this place. They always make great recommendations and the food is incredible. The staff is accommodating and very friendly!
Have ate at Dawat many times. This time the food was not as good as on previous visits. My tandoori chicken was overdone/dry.
We have been visiting this elegant Indian restaurant in our neighborhood for at least 10 years. We have never been disappointed. It is clean, elegant, quiet and the staff is always friendly and attentive. The food is wonderful and always delicious. We have never had anything less than an excellent meal here. I highly recommend this excellent restaurant.
Food was excellent. Service was exemplary. We highly recommend the restaurant.
Used to be great. Not anymore. Looked forward to sarson ka saag—was awful.
We were the only people there. Our reservation was for 2:15 and at 2:00 they called and asked when we would be there. Green beans tasted like the freezer and were barely cooked. Meat and chicken dishes lacked meat and were mostly sauce, even if the sauces were tasty. Expensive. Won’t go again
We first went to Dawat when we were dating and later announced our engagement to our parents there 17 years ago. We then loved in various places around the country and in other countries. The place looks exactly as it did back then. Food and service is still outstanding. They do need to renovate though, it looks a bit tired.
Excellent food and attentive service.
Delicioso lugar! Visita obligada en NY!
Delicious and wonderful service!
The food was terribly disappointing. The only dish I LOVED was the onion kulcha. The rest of the dishes were poor to just OK. I am actually shocked that this restaurant's formerly exquisite cuisine has degenerated to ordinary to poor level.
The coat of the meal did not correlate with the quality of the food.
Fantastic food, been coming back for 10 years.
During this time the menu has stayed refreshed with delicious additions - new favourite is a fig based curry spiced to personal preference!
The food and the service was very good. I always enjoy my meals at this restaurant and it is easy to reach by subway.
Food not as good as our previous visit. Maybe a different chef?
Dawat offers exceptional cooking and service for reasonable prices. Savor its expertly prepared shrimp in curry sauce (ordered mild). We enjoyed a relaxing, unhurried evening here while visiting New York.
The server was rude this is the second time this happens so i guess the staff is poorly trained in manners. Great food but don’t think we will be going back again.
Unfortunately the food was not good and gave me indigestion all night which has never happened to me before from Indian food. I love Indian food and spices, but the shrimp with curry was really bland. For $30 they don't even give you any rice. The rice with garlic and spinach was good for another $9. Nothing was done to stop the children from loud screaming.. it seems like neighborhood families were there and children are allowed to scream and run around. It was also freezing in there so the food got cold really fast. Only good thing was the service was lovely, but I won't be going back.
Awesome experience ,the food is freshly cooked and authentic.
Dawat has survived for decades in the competitive Midtown restaurant scene because it serves high-quality, varied Indian cuisine in a lovely environment. Step out of the noise and into a genteel white tableclothed space where waiters are attentive and the food is delicious. The best part: it is quiet. You can have a conversation without shouting to make yourself heard over the Midtown bustle. Perfect for a date or deep conversation with a good friend!
Excellent as always. Great flavors and high quality. Excellent service!!!
Best Indian food I've ever eaten. My husband and I love Indian food this restaurant had very unique dishes that were all delicious. They will cater to you're every desire and request. Very friendly staff
Have been coming here for 10+ years - great to see that it's just as good now as it was then and hasn't changed a bit.
Old carpet and ?moldy scent. Old waiters with over-sized suits and crooked bow ties.
Average food quality with sad service!
Needs a major renovation of place and spirit
It has a nice atmosphere, more formal than many Indian restaurants. The staff is lovely. We had tikka chicken and it was good.
Muy buena la comida
One of a very small number of restaurants where it's possible to enjoy an excellent meal, indulge your taste for world cuisine, sip a good wine, all the while maintaining your table conversation in normal tones. Club-like atmosphere, great to connect and reconnect and swap stories; on the other hand, if you are in the mood for plunging into some happy noisy ambience desogned to dispense with talk (and there are merits in that, too) you should definitely opt away.
We have been visiting Dawat for more than a dozen years, and it never fails. Delicious recipes from Madhuf Jeffrey. Sindh Khadi is a unique specialty. Among the starters, I recommends dried okra and bhel (try sookha- with suace on the side).
The worst experience I have had in terms of Indian food. I grew up in England and have enjoyed eating Indian all my life. This was very bland food, with no aromatic spices, and naan that tasted like they had been frozen. At the same time, this is moderately expensive. Madhur would be ashamed of this place, and annoyed that they are using her name. I cook many of her dishes, and know that Dawat was NOT up to that mark. The next day I have gastroenteritis from their dreadful food, I suppose.
Poor food at a very high price. Definitely not value for money.
Dawat is charming! The staff are so gracious, the food is delectable and we love coming back year after year for special celebrations.
Love that place best Indian food and friendly server
good as always, clean, well presented, fine service
We went to Dawat on a night of atrocious weather, so the restaurant was almost empty, but we were so glad we ventured out. Really distinctive menu, with lots of vegetarian options that were new to me - tandoori mushroom being one, excellent. Also loved the okra kurkuri. But for me the piece de resistance was the cornish hen, absolutely wonderful, will definitely have again.
Service is pleasantly old-fashioned, and the decor also pleasant. Don't know what the noise level would be like on a night of better weather and bigger crowd, probably fine.
Recommended for quiet conversation, gracious service, and well prepared Indian cuisine in a pleasant contemporary setting. Puzzled why my party had to request to see the “lunch special” menu when Dawat’s website advertises it. The tab for four was quite high given the tiny portions that were served. While everything was delicious, one may very well leave hungry.
I love Dawat. Founded by a famous Indian chef, it never disappoints and is one of the few quiet restaurants where I can always have a great conversation with my friends and family. I've been going to Dawat for decades and hope to for decades to come.
The food was excellent as was the service and decor.
ALWAYS EXCELLENT! Chicken Tika masala is the BEST. Great rice pudding too
The service was amazing. The gentleman waiting us were very helpful and the food was fantastic. I'm Indian so I know my food very well and the flavors were not over-the-top but complimented each other just right. I would definitely come back.
