Dawat is a beautiful place. When we want to remember the subtlety and courtesy of India, we go to Dawat for dinner. it is a simple, refined environment, fantastic, creative food with many new things each time, along with Madjur Jaffrey's unique regular items.
I wouldn't recommend Dawat to a friend only because there are now so many other Indian restaurants that offer a comparable or better dining experience.
We had lunch here at 1:30 and the large restaurant was empty but for one other table. It is still a lovely wide open space but is very, very dark. Since there was virtually nobody else there, the service was excellent, albeit frosty.
Both my friend and I ordered simply. We shared vegetable samosas which were delicious and then each of us had tandoori chicken. Both servings were over cooked and needed a sauce to dilute the dryness. The rice was fine. All & all a disappointment.
Fantastic! Staff was attentive and food was outstanding. Wonderful to have a meal and conversation with a colleague.
The weather was bad, so the restaurant was quiet. We ordered starters of samosas and a shrimp dish, which had a lovely sauce. We thought that that dish would be a nice entree,if it came with rice or bread to go with the sauce, but as a starter it felt incomplete. One of our main dishes was very good...the baked eggplant with tamarind sauce. The other, a vegetable stew was disappointing because rather than be full of chunks of veggies, it was mostly all sauce with a few small pieces of veggie thrown in. The sauce was nice, but not special, and unless you poured it over rice it was better eaten with a spoon than fork. The bread was very good and we used that to dip in the sauce. Overall a nice meal but we will make different choices next time.

When we want to eat Indian in Manhattan we always try to choose Dawat. The food is wonderful and the bread is fabulous. This time, we celebrated my son't 30th birthday there. I can highly recommend the vegetarian dishes and I chose the special dinner with veggie dishes so I could have many types of dishes. It was wonderful!
We love Dawat and think of it as our neighborhood Indian restaurant. Food is terrific. Dale and one of our friends always orders for the table so I have no idea what I'm eating but everything is terrific and I don't have to wash my hair when I get home as there are no cooking odors in the dining room. It's rarely noisy.
In a city as busy as New York, it is a pleasure to find a restaurant where one can hear conversation with a friend while enjoying delicious food.

Went there with high expectations. We spent $80 for dinner for two, which included one appetizer, one veg dish, 2 nan, 1 beverage and 1 veg biryani. The quality of food was like very basic corner restaurant, no need to spend that amount of money. All furniture is ages old. Ambiance was average and dull.
We sat next to the open kitchen and watched the chef prepare the food. It was entrancing. The food was as usual excellent. The breads (we only had naan and pouri this time) were better than most other Indian restaurants. The spinach samosas were exceptional.
A very fine dining experience for 4 adults and 2 children - we all had a fine experience.
Nothing like Dawat for Indian food!!! It is always delicious, cocktails are great and creative and the service is good and very corteous... I'd go back any day of the week 😃
Dawat is a classic. We have been coming here since 1992, but hadn't been here in several years. It's still as delicious as ever. Standouts were the chicken tikka nan, vindaloo, chicken biryani and shrimp curry. The tandoori vegetables were also a nice surprise. Mulligatawny was good, but not as good as Coriander in White Plains. I would skip the papadums next time--they were ordinary. Service was attentive.

One of the signature dishes is a whole fish prepared Tandoori style. It was the most boring piece of fish. The muligatwny soup was puréed. Both dishes were hard to consume so I didn’t. Highly overrated overall.
We were visiting NYC, and treated my wife's step-mother to an authentic Indian dinner. She had lived in India and Pakistan, and was delighted with the variety and the authenticity of the dishes. I cook recipes from Madhur Jaffrey's books, and this was about my sixth visit. It was a bit boisterous around our table, as there was a large party with kids celebrating something at the next table, but we all enjoyed the meal. Whenever I come to NYC, I always go for the Cornish Game Hen in Green Chillies, and request it authentically spiced (pretty hot!)

We were first at the restaurant for a 5:30 p.m. reservation and needed to leave by 6:45 for the theater. The food was exceptionally well prepared and the service suited out schedule. The restaurant was quiet although we can't say how it is when full of diners. We know great food although we are not foodies. Dawat deserves your business.
At lunch apart from one other table the place was empty. It became apparent when the food was served, that no one wanted to eat there for good reason. The half warmed up offerings were tasteless and not worth eating.

Reservation was easy to do and we were having friends with us. Tried tasting menu, separately ordered for drinks and green tea. Yum!

Delicious food + beverages! The serving staff was wonderful & brought out a dessert with a candle for my mother's birthday. Great place for a special occasion.
Food was very good but service was not at all elegant for a place which is supposed to be one of the top 12-15 in NYC for Indian food; plus it has 'haute' in its name. Doesn't live up to it.
The place was surprisingly not full for a late Saturday evening since we had settled for this as 3rd-4th choice that evening. Not sure why. Maybe the late hour explained the rather basic service attitude.
I love Madhur Jaffrey so getting to go to her restaurant was amazing! We got saag paneer and chicken tikka masala and both were so good! The naan and the rice were great too but you have to order the rice! I had a really good glass of rose while I was there as well! I made a reservation for a Saturday night, but it's not neccessary! Mindy Kaling said this is her favorite indian restaurant in NYC!
Went to lunch with 2 friends. All of say we will be back soon as we had a very tasty lunch with very good service. The lunch specials are a great bargain. It may be more crowded at dinner but was pretty empty for us as we went for a 1:30 lunch. My friends eat out a lot and can be "difficult" but both were very pleased. If you are in the Bloomingdale's area, I recommend you eat here as it is a much better value than most of the area's restaurants. But--be sure to ask for the lunch special menu as it might not otherwise be offered.
