About Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse - Manhattan
THE IDEA & HISTORY
In 1985, at the young and ambitious age of 24, Steve DiFillippo purchased a locally-owned family restaurant called Davio’s on Newbury Street in Boston’s trendy Back Bay. As Boston’s culinary tastes evolved, he transformed the location into a destination. He retooled the menu, the space, the wine list. The new Davio’s soon garnered rave reviews.
The idea behind Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse was simple, regional Italian foods with a focus on the grill.

Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse - Manhattan Ratings and Reviews
The service was excellent and very attentive on a busy New Years Eve night. The food (NY Strip) was flavorful and cooked to my specifications. Sean, one of the managers ensured guest were taken care of. Overall great experience and look forward to trying more items on the menu in 2018!
Do not eat here! Table for 8 at 6 pm on a Sunday- not too busy. Hot dishes came out cold and sent back to get reheated . Vegan cauliflower entree not impressive. Spaghetti with clams initially came out cold and congealed and sent back. Came back hot but totally tasteless. Chilean sea bass with puttanesca served cold, sent back to reheat. Scallop dish cold but eaten by my hungry brother. Octopus appetizer sent back because inedible to to the strong hickory smoke flavor. Dessert with Birthday candle came out with no utensils on table. Manager and waiter had no comments or apologies for the mistakes. Not customer friendly. Pretty place but not hitting the food mark.
Date Night with Trish and Vernon.
Nice evening with friends celebrating our anniversary. Sea Scallops were excellent though the Risotto was not a winner.....bland...lacking seasoning and a unpleasant taste. The Squash puree was a nice touch, but was really just a light garnish, no way to truly enjoy since there was very little there. Great surroundings, service was excellent (Nick!) and it was a nice touch when the brought each of the 4 us a glass of champagne to celebrate our 41st aniversary and their 44th anniversary.
2nd time there and to be honest with you both were kind of disappointing.
I had heard great things about the restaurant, but we didn't have that experience.
The 1st time we went I ordered filet mignon and it was so salty it was gross.
I love steak, but was fearful it would happen again so the 2nd time I went I ordered scallops and they arrived cold. They were cooked, but just cold by the time I was served. I didn't bother telling the waiter because the place was packed. We had made a reservation...was supposed to be a special dinner with friends for my husband's birthday and we ended up waiting over 45 minutes for our table. There were several large parties there having Christmas parties and they seemed to be the priority. In no rush to go back.
We were meeting another couple and Davios was near our hotel. We had a reservation, but our table wasn't ready when we got there and we had to wait a good 20 minutes to be seated. We understand that it was around the Holidays but the noise level was deafening and we were crowded into the room such that the backs of our chairs were touching the back of diners at another table. We ordered and the waiter asked if we wanted an appetizer or salad, we said, "no." He then recommended that we get something to eat because the kitchen was backed up and it might take some time for us to get our meals, which I felt was unacceptable. Again, the place was getting packed with some large parties but one would think that a well-run restaurant would have enough kitchen staff to make sure orders come out timely, particularly when they presumably know that they are going to large parties. Overall, the meal was adequate but for the price, not worth it. We will never go there again.
The food at Davio's was VERY good. We had been there (maybe) 5 min for DINNER and the waiter was ready to take our order. I said "we would like to start with the crab cakes" and the waiter said "what about the rest of your order?" I paused for about 5 seconds and just looked at him. He said "the chef likes to put everything in at the same time" but he never gave me the "why" behind that. This was dinner and I would like to enjoy my glass of wine before rushing to make a dinner decision - and I don't want my dinner to arrive before Ive finished my first glass of wine.
After that point in the evening, everything worked out and it was a great dinner but it would have been good to understand the rush
My wife & I have been to Davios' Boston, Foxboro and Lynnfield. All were exceptional (we even had a couple of office Christmas parties there) with regard to service and food. NYC was an exception. The restaurant was very crowded which is understandable but there is absolutely no place for people to wait. We were seated quickly but many others were standing on top of each other waiting. My wife's order was a whole fish (deboned) which she asked to have the skin removed. Our waiter said ok, but nothing happened. It took the manager to come over and ask how everything was and we said, not so good. She then promptly took my wife's meal away and within a few minutes it came back prepared as my wife wanted it. Our waiter NEVER acknowledged to us that he did NOTHING on this request. If I could have given our tip to the manager and zero to our waiter, I would have!!
Everything about this restaurant was great. We arrived early for our reservation and they seated us immediately. Very helpful waiter. The pastas were tasty; I had the gnocchi with mushrooms as an appetizer portion and my husband had the bolognese as a main. The meatballs were very good as a starter and the grilled sea scallops perfectly cooked and accompanied by a small salad. The Davio's reserve Pinot Noir was excellent. If i had known they offered an affogato for dessert I would not have ordered a coffee before they brought the dessert trolley. (maybe time to give that old stalwart up and go with a dessert menu). We tend to be fussy but would definitely come here again and would recommend to others.
We went to Davio's for Thanksgiving dinner and to celebrate my parents 57th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was very accommodating, seating us in a quiet corner as I had asked when they called the day before. The maitre d' Shawn was wonderful on the phone and quite hospitable in person. The waitress brought out the desserts with candles for my parents so we could sing to them. The Thanksgiving meal was terrific. The turkey and all the accompaniments were delicious. We will certainly come back to try this restaurant for a non-holiday meal!
