Disappointed. Had reservations, seated near the breezy door. Wasn't allowed to change seats.
One party ordered white fish special, totally lacking flavor. I ordered filet medium rare, it was served medium.
This should not happen... at any price point!
Delicious. We got the open faced lobster ravioli and the peppered Filet Mignon. Salmon cakes for appetizer. Excellent meal. Highly recommend.
Overall very happy
The food was amazing, innovative menu and really interesting taste!
As always David's was wonderful. We have never had a bad meal there. Service is outstanding and the food is served as fast as it is made. Great for pre-theater, special occasions, small and comfortable dining area
Great food, great service, creative & always a wonderful meal.
David's is a great place to go anytime, but we find it a perfect place to meet friends before a show at the Merrill Auditorium across the street. This was our second pre-show dinner and both experiences were excellent! The wait staff makes us feel confident that they're keeping watch on the time for us without rushing us through the meal. I was extremely pleased with my entrée: Seared Mushroom Napolean, surrounded by a moat of coconut-lemongrass broth -- beautiful, delicious and light. Others had filet mignon, haddock with crab and salmon. So there's something for everyone, and we heard nothing but good comments from our dinner companions. We're luck to have David's in Portland!
While the setup and look was lovely we were not met to a single simple request. Upon entering, asking for quieter or more private spot we were reassured that people were leaving. So that means we were sat at the front window by the front door being seen by everyone and everything but unable to see anything ourselves. The very next group to come in the was sat DIRECTLY NEXT TO US. So this meant all privacy was gone, and this group was not and enjoyable group to be around (not the fault of restaurant). But now our nice night was just begun broken.
The service was just bland. No specials were explained, no suggestions made, and tables sat after us were served first. So for what was supposed to be a nice night out with a loved one, turned into listening to two stoned out young people arguing over affording wine. This just made for an unpleasant surrounding.
Food overall was great, BUT the blackened fish is extremely salty. I know it's a house made seasoning but you literally had to use every bit of sauce to tone it down.
I'm sorry, I'm not typically one to tear up on restaurants. But tonight was pretty upsetting overall.
The food selection was very interesting. The appetizers we had (crab cakes and Arancini) were excellent. The entrees were also outstanding (crispy duck and grilled seafood). The service was attentive yet unobtrusive. Great dining experience.
A lovely place for dinner with friends before a Portland Symphony Orchestra concert.
Really appreciated the attention to acoustics/noise levels ...so few restaurants seem to
care about this issue which in my mind is key to enjoying a good meal. I hate being
bombarded with loud music while trying to dine and enjoy conversation. .. We were there for a late lunch so not too crowded, so I can't say how it
is at night but they are trying at least. All the food was fabulous!
Food prepared with talented chef and staff making it all a excellent dining time.
We found Davids as a last minute search on Open Table and weird very glad we did. Its a small spot with a great ambiance. The food was really fantastic all-round from garlic knots brought to start to the calamari, the tuna tartar, steak tartar and a wonderful ravioli dish. If you're on the fence about where to go, you will not be disappointed.
One of our favorite places in Portland and has been for 20 (?) years.
We love David's and have never been disappointed, but tonight was exceptional. Sat at counter by kitchen. Skeptical at first but allowed for quiet conversation, fantastic service, and entertainment watching them cook. No interaction with guests (I like that!) and so professional. No wonder they are such a well oiled machine. Caesar was perfect with a creamy dressing and good croutons. Mussels were light and full of flavor. Tuna - perfect. Best asparagus I've ever had. Haddock special was so moist and clean tasting, not swimming in the tangy sauce, allowed both to stand beside each other well. Carrot cake dessert was different, a rolled version, but light and delicious. David's is one of Portland's true gems!
David's is and will continue to be a go-to spot for celebrations and good dinner. The Crispy Brussels Sprouts are always my first order. I will say that the Crispy Skinned Duck didn't live up to its title. The duck breast was covered with a lot of sauce which negated any chance of crisp, and the meat was overcooked and grainy. The beet salad was lovely, but the greens were overdressed. We had a wide range of orders at our table - vegetarian to tuna to pork to different salads and more, which were much enjoyed. Our favorite server took very good care of us and we had a nice chat with Chef Turin at the end of the evening.
Brilliant restaurants, diverse options, amazing service & location
Second time eating here. We were not disappointed in any way. Responded to dietary requirements with a great alternative. Will be back!
Service was great. We arrived early for our 8 PM dinner reservation and we were seated right away. Our server was very attentive. There was a special menu for Maine Restaurant Week. The price was great for the portions we received. The garlic knots were complimentary and full of flavor. It was really buttery and garlicky (not that it’s a bad thing). Overall we enjoyed our meal and the ambiance was great.
Fantastic food, you cannot go wrong here - while a little pricey, you get some incredible food that should be worth double it’s price. I highly recommend!!!
We went to David’s for restaurant week and we were both blown away by everything we order (and the complimentary garlic bread knots, yum!) David’s was never on our Portland dinner radar but we will definitely be back.
Absolutely the best food I have had in a long time!
Was the first to arrive with the rest of my party running late. I didn’t want to wait so I did the lunch buffet which offers a variety of super tasty entree, charcuterie, veggies, pizza, soup, and a desert: all for $11. If the buffet is busy, the choices rotate to new dishes so you can try a bunch of offerings from one of Portland’s foodie chef-owned establishments without hurting too bad in the wallet.
Always had a great meal at Davids...except last weekend. Steak was so tough could barely eat it - it was marinated and could only taste the marinade! salmon was good yet topping was dry. Cesar salad and clam chowder excellent.
Will however return someday for another try.
David’s is a must dine for place in Portland
Delicious, as always! Love this place! The calamari is to die for!!
The garlic knots were amazing. The food was good. We did have a question about one item after it was served and I did not feel that the issue was resolved adequately, but it was not my meal. Overall a nice business lunch atmosphere.
Service was attentive without overbearing. Wine and beer selection was very good. Warm garlic bread knots were outstanding. Menu offering was diverse and the seafood expertly prepared.
Birthday dinner was lovely
The food was absolutely delicious and beautiful! The drinks were tasty, but I have had better. Also, for the amount of staff in the small dining room, the service was a bit slow.
Overall, a great spot for a delicious meal.
Delicious food! A little cramped at the bar but overall very good!!
We visit Portland often and Love David's Restaurant . Always a creative menu with a great atmosphere . It is often crowded to make you reservations and there will be no problem . Fantastic from start to finish . We Will Be Back !!!
We had a fun delicious meal and would definitely come back the next time we are in Portland.
Perfect every time!
Beautifully cooked and presented food. Flavors were all very strong but we almost licked the plate so obviously not TOO strong. Delicous but very sweet brussel sprouts with almond topping, very bacony but so good clam chowder. My lamb was fabulous and duck fat greens were divine. The halibut was well cooked but bland. The carrot cake looked beautiful but needed some texture.
I would go back for the great service and the good food oh and the jalapeno ginger margarita! But I would not choose to sit in the back room it totally lacks the warm atmosphere of the main room and feels like an afterthought that someone has cheaply toilet papered the ceiling as decoration.
Went to David's for late Valentines late lunch, we got duck and salmon. The food was exceptional! David Turin and staff have talent! Will go back.
It was Valentine's day and they were trying to turn over tables quickly, so we felt rushed as a consequence. The server tried to take our order 4 times in the first 5 minutes and then never came to check on us after the entree was served was by another server. She then offered to box up my husband's meal while he was still eating and then told us she was boxing up the dessert goodies for us to take home.
She never asked why I didn't even touch the filet mignon, she just offered to box it up.
We were seated very close to host stand where the host kept running his fingers thru his hair and beard......and then was serving food and setting tables. Also the kitchen staff and other servers kept coming to the host stand to check on the reservations still due in, very distracting with us sitting so close by.
We love the food at David's.....but it was a bad choice for a Valentine's day.
We had an excellent experience. Our server was terrific, the food fresh and delicious-made my birthday celebration extra special-Love David's!!
Nice specials and happy hour options. Arugala salad was amazing with pears and pecans.
Perfect setting for a date night. Great food and service. We will be back.
