Located at the foot of Portland’s arts district on Monument square, Portland ME David Turin, Chef / Owner moved David’s to this historic location in 1998. The restaurant is tastefully and creatively decorated update to the “Great Fire” surviving building which housed the presses for The Portland Telegram Newspaper at the turn of the century. The open kitchen allows diners to watch the creation of meals which feature the bounty of regional resources prepared without culinary boundaries. David’s cuisine has one foot in tradition and another in the contemporary influences of many of the world’s great cuisines.

Off premise catering is offered on a limited basis, generally for regular guests by request only. Because of this limit, every party is unique and memorable.
We recommend that our guests park in the adjacent Monument Square parking garage, or the Free Street lot, which is immediately adjacent to it on Free Street. The Elm Street Garage, across from the Public Library is also available and within easy walking distance and the Public Market garage is located behind the library across the street from the restaurant. Most people are able to find street parking if they drive around for a minute or two.

David’s Restaurant in Portland can accommodate smaller parties in a private dining room or as many as 150 guests utilizing the entire restaurant. Choose from sit-down menus of between 3 and 9 courses off of our regular menus, or allow us to prepare a special menu just for your event.

David's turned out to be an excellent experience after an inauspicious beginning when the maitre d' tried to seat me (a older woman single diner) at a high-top table literally crammed in against the wall between the bar stools and a bench for bar overflow. He then seated me at a nice table for two next to a window looking out onto the street. The service was impeccable: friendly, knowledgeable, flawless and perfectly timed. The ambiance is busy, but not crazy loud or overwhelming. Couples near me didn't seem to be having any trouble holding conversations. As for the food, the salmon cakes appetizer was delicious, as was the main course of beautifully cooked duck breast on a bed of risotto with spinach. The crème brûlée was supposed to be flavored with amaretto and orange but I couldn't taste either and found the crème to be good but unexceptional. David's has an excellent wine list and the prices are not out of line for a high-end restaurant. I would have given it 5 stars overall, but for the attempt to seat me in the back of beyond in the midst of all the bar traffic.
We came for our anniversary. We go to David’s to celebrate all of our special occasions. The food is always great and beautifully plated but we sincerely miss the goat cheese packets. The texture and the flavor combination of that dish are outstanding. I am currently dealing with unknown allergies and it was still easy for me to order off the menu. We sat in the Opus Ten ( which we have done- fantastic but can’t drive if you do the alcohol pairings- and it was quiet and cozy.
Was visiting from Minneapolis and wanted to hit some spots where good food was. Our first choice was booked, but had David's as our second. We walked from our hotel in the pouring rain....got seated right away, they have a nice wine list and the FOOD was outstanding. My squash risotto was amazing...the salmon that my friend had was a huge portion and the prices were very reasonable.
This is our go to place in Portland. The food has been delicious each time. This year my wife had the crispy duck, while I had the haddock. Both were delicious, but maybe a touch on the smaller side. My wife has a gluten issues and likes the options to suit her diet. The ambiance is perfect, not too old, not too young and the place always seems upbeat. Noise level is not an issue. It's located just off the center so be sure to look for it.
We had not been to David's in a few years....I had forgotten how great the food is there -so, so good. We won't wait a few years to go back again. The host Libby was incredibly friendly and polite which is always a bonus.
Very well prepared and creative food, without being fussy. Many choices from vegetarian and fish to meat. Atmosphere is comfortable and casual , and the service is excellent. We went there for both lunch and dinner. The lunch salads we had, one chicken and farm vegetables, one grilled scallops on squash and greens, were both excellent and reasonably priced for the quality. Dinner was more pricey, but fine for the quality of the food. They give you a good sized "pour" for the glass of wine, which is always appreciated. Very friendly and helpful staff- and a lot of them.
David’s WS the best dining experience we had in our three days in Portland, Maine. It was recommended by a friend who lived in Portland. We had a spectacular Haddock dish, served on a bed of artichoke risotto and sautéed spinach. The wine was an awesome Malbec. The dessert was a warm compote of raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries served with vanilla ice cream.
I will go there again.
We have dined at David's several times previously during the week and chose David's for a Saturday evening get-together with visiting guests from NYC and made reservations for a party of 5 well in advance of the actual date. We were awkwardly sat at a table near the door and when I asked the hostess if there were any other alternatives, I received a curt "No" in response, not even an "I'm sorry, but we are full at the moment and this is the best I can do" or "Let me see." No offer of accommodation at all, but rather a take-it-or-leave it attitude. Our server was pleasant enough but inattentive between courses and, as a result, David lost out on the sale of at least another bottle of wine. While the food was delicious as usual, we decided never again on a Saturday night.
Dinner at David's was a pleasure. Our server was exceptional and recommended items that fit our taste perfectly. The atmosphere was nice and cozy, although a large loud table was seated next to us about half way through the meal. But we can't blame the restaurant for wanted to accommodate large groups. We will definitely go back.
I have been trying some of the 'hot' spots in Portland during the past month, and of the five I have sampled, David's is my favorite. The beet salad is sublime, as is the sushi grade tuna entree. My friends and I were dazzled. The menu is more diverse than other more exclusively fish restaurants, and that suited us too. Nothing to write home about, about the ambiance (except the location) but that's OK. Wine list suited us too.
We’ve visited Dave’s in the past and been very pleased. Celebrating our 34th anniversary at Dave’s was an easy decision. Food is exceptional, service outstanding. I particularly like the fact that one can actually use a normal voice when engaging in conversation. Too many establishments today tend to be very load.
6 of us had a very good evening. It was a busy Friday at 7 pm but there was no wait for our reserved table. A terrific menu, including Maine lobsters for my visiting friends and both seafood and other items for we locals who didn't want lobster. Good wine list and good service. The folks who had lobster loved it. My tuna was terrific. Service was prompt and friendly but not intrusive. I've lived in the3 area for many years but had never been to David's. I regret that and hope to be back soon and often.
David’s has been around for ages… and I have had both very positive and very mediocre experiences. I’m happy to report that this most recent visit was easily the most successful from a culinary standpoint. Everything we ordered was on point… The brussels sprouts appetizer, the tuna tartare appetizer, the beet and goat cheese salad, the arugula and blue cheese salad, the duck breast with risotto entrée, the meatloaf and mashed potato entrée… All absolutely delicious, thoughtfully plated, perfectly cooked...And at a far more reasonable price point then other newer/trendier establishments. Our server was capable and friendly. I think, overall, the food is the stand out here… The service and ambiance both need a bit of an overhaul in my humble estimation. Then it could REALLY compete with the other foodie restaurants that Portland has become known for.
This was my first time at David’s for a meal as I’ve been there for Happy Hour before. I was not disappointed with my visit. I really don’t have any complaints about my visit except it was a tad noisy. But that was by choice as we sat near the window which is wide open.
I would highly recommend David’s fir any occasion!!
Davids is always s pleasure, although a tiny disappointment tonight. Perfect Martinis, great wine list, delicious calamari and Caesar salad (best dressing in town), and my favorite restaurant meal- their pepper crusted tuna. But... My wife's scallops and shrimp skewers were too spicy and couscous had an odd spice (cinnamon?) . There were perfectly cooked shellfish but spices were off. Still, dessert paid off - ice cream sandwich (huge) and peanut butter cheesecake I'll remember for years.
Davids is still one of our top places in Portland, and anywhere.
Our table was ready with no wait. Unfortunately, we were seated across from the food service window. But other spots in the restuarant had good ambiance.
The cocktails were creative.
Our service was very good. However we were charged for one beer that was never delivered to the table.
Food was good. Special mussels were great.
Duck was not crispy. Will try again.
Very impressed. Everything was just right. Great location and decor. We were there on a busy Saturday night but service was friendly, prompt and not fussy (unlike some other Portland restaurants.... The charcuterie and cheese plate could be a little richer on cheese and charcuterie and a little poorer on the other stuff (fruit, croutons etc....) but the haddock special was just sensational. Very very nice.
The "Portland Sirloin" was too tough. For the price of the meal (and the size of the beef) this meat should have been a much more tender cut of beef. The shrimp and scallops were tasty though. I just felt that the restaurant was very pricey for what you got.
