The food at Opus 10 was fairly disappointing. The first course, soup, was pretty good and the desert was excellent. Everything else in between was as mediocre as it can get; the fish was overcooked and tasteless, the meat was way too salty without anything there to balance it off. We all decided on wine pairing and the wine was just ok, middle of the road variety that did nothing to make me say wow even once. I must say that the amount of wine with each dish was very generous but i wish they had given less of something better.
With all the great and interesting restaurants in Portland, you can get much better food and experience at $150/person.

The service was great

I went here with my best friend to celebrate my birthday. I had always wanted to try David's Opus Ten after reading a few years ago that they offered a vegetarian tasting menu in addition to the standard one. I called a few days before my reservation to confirm that was still available and was disappointed to learn that the vegetarian tasting menu had been discontinued. However, I was told they would be happy to accommodate me. The chef prepared a delicious meal for both me and my friend. Sometimes we had the same dish, other times mine was altered to include veggies while my friend enjoyed seafood and meat. We both loved everything we were served, and were delighted to be seated at the chef's table where we could watch everything being created. Amazing food, ambiance, and service. I will definitely go back the next time I am back home visiting Portland.

This is our favorite restaurant -- hands down an exceptional experience. We most recently attended on 7/5/17 for a belated anniversary dinner and literally had the best dinner ever. The food is imaginative, beautiful, cooked to perfection, and each dish (of a 7-course meal) is outstanding. Davids Opus 10 truly shines.

Innovative and delicious tasting menu and wine-pairing. Exceptional value for the generous portions and pours. Having eaten in all the top restaurants in Portland, I am confortable rating this restaurant number 1. Why? The chef, Matt Caddell is master at his craft, as we cruised through a smoked watercress-potato soup, steak tartar, Leon grass and lime sorbet with a generous splash of mint-infused rum, ricotta gnocchi with bacon lardons and porcini mushroom cream, fennel-crusted pork chop, and a deconstructed tiramisu. The complementary wines were splendid choices: Bandol rose, Planeta cerasuolo, Alban viognier, Fatalone primatologist, and a NV Charleston madiera. Love this restaurant!

My husband is vegan and I am vegetarian. We were dining with a meat eating couple. It is very rare that a restaurant can provide exceptional dining for such a varied crew of diners but they succeeded!

David's Opus Ten is for those people who truly want a different dining experience. You get 7 courses with two options per course. The food was consistently innovative and delicious. And the wine pairings were perfection. And the service was tremendous. If you are looking for large servings, this is not the place to go, but if you are in search of interesting selections that you have not had before, this is the place to be. It is a small intimate restaurant where you get treated extremely well and the food is scrumptious. We left quite satiated, by the way. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We used to be a fan of Opus Ten. But things have changed.

1.) if i pay $300 for dinner for 2 I am expecting white table cloth, not formica...the ambiance just isn't there
2.) the food just wasn't good. It appears over engineered and complicated for no purpose. (Except the soup)
3.) some dishes where presented on a plate for two to be shared with your neighbor. Why?? Its awkward to lean to the side to eat your appetizer, aside from hygenic considerations.

Sorry opus but we wont be back. If you like fine dining Tempo Dulu knows how its done right.

I've been to Opus Ten a few times. This last visit was great, but things are definitely not as amazing as when Chef Bo was there. Next time I'm in town I'll try his new place.

We met up with some friends while visiting Portland and chose David's Opus 10 as the venue. It was a great success. We all left agreeing that it was a fun and memorable evening of great food and wonderful wine pairings. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about their craft which added greatly to our enjoyment of the evening. Its not at all the typical stuffy tasting dinner; wonderful vegetarian choices that our carnivore husbands hugely enjoyed, a very fun and retro amuse, beautifully prepared fish and steak. Visually and taste-wise the food was delicious and the wine pairings were spot on. It will certainly be on my list of places to return on our next trip to Portland.

First time back since their re-opening as a seasonal restaurant. Although we have always felt the space to be lacking, the new young team in the kitchen is very talented and the meal was very, very good. Make sure to book a table before they close for the winter. We'll be back.

We've eaten at Opus 10 a number of times over the years. It is consistently fantastic, unlike some of the other high end restaurants in town. The food is wonderful - 'experimental' without being weird, a complex mix of flavors in every bite. The service as always been top notch - friendly and attentive.

A year ago this was an experience to delight, amazing and interesting food, in a cool environment with great service. Today it is dialed way down, the food is good but no more than that. Servers were not well trained. Prices are about the same as a year ago, so the value is way down.
Wine list had 3 reds, one of which was a rose.
Seems to be a conscious decesion to become a different restaurant,

I'm going to say right off that I'm partly to blame for the way the evening progressed. I had the week off so I chose Friday night for the 9 course option instead of the 7,only to learn there was no 9. The 2 previous times I went to Opus we were asked if we'd like a pre-dinner cocktail. With 2 less courses and minus a drink to linger over, dinner was much shorter than I had planned. I was planning to be at Opus for two and a half hours minimum. I also should say that there was an exceptionally large party which I'm sure skewed the pace of the evening. Overall it's hard to say anything bad about this place. The food was beyond exquisite and I'm always anxious to get back to one of David's restaurants.

Their menu is a tasting menu; bites for 1 meaning little to share and you will have to order multiple items. That may sound negative, but those tastes are fantastic. Depending on how big your appetite, 2 to 4 items should be expected. My wife loved the scallop so much, she ended up ordering it twice.
Only small negative is you pay for a serving of bread that is replenished but is for 1. Two people? Two items. One for each. They don't necessarily strictly enforce it, but it is on the menu that way and if you both reply yes for the bread, you will be billed twice.
Considering the price of the items, and that you will be ordering multiple items, just seems to be a way to add to the profit.
FYI this will not stop us from going back. But something you should know in advance.

We went to Portland for a couple of days and were looking for a good dinner after a long drive. We were surprised with what we found. Opus 10 was a little gem...which is hidden in the back of David's, so you can't even see it when you walk through the door. Order the lobster on the fried risotto cake...you won't be disappointed. Actually, we weren't disappointed by anything...it was faboulous!! 5 stars!

We loved the quiet, yet relaxed and casual atmosphere of Opus Ten.

It seemed like most of the dishes were better than the ones that preceded the current dish, which makes for a great experience.

The most memorable dishes of the night were the butter poached lobster and the tuna tartare, with the tuna tartare being elevated to a height far above almost any other tartare dish we've ever had. It was so complex with so many layers of flavors, we were all just blown away.

The service was great as well. They provided any and all information requested, and did so with humor and patience.

The intimate setting of having only eighteen seats made it that much more enjoyable, as we felt comfortable, and it's great not having to talk over dozens of other people.

I will recommend this place to everyone.

This was our 7 th time to visit Opus 10. We convinced some friends to join us as we live in Bangor and this dining experience requires overnight at hotel. I gave the meal and outstanding but our service was very disappointing. We had raved to our friends about the prior experiences. We even did the Baird dinner in K-port with David himself. That dinner and service was very good. I hope that this was just a bad night for the staff. They couldn't explain the wine pairings, how the meal was prepared, etc. Disappointed !!

When we were told that the bottle of wine we had ordered was not at optimal temperature and were given free glasses from an opened bottle while it was chilling, we knew the service was going to be exceptional and their standards were high. This tiny back room restaurant is an intimate experience between you, a few other diners, the talented wait staff and one chef, cranking out delicious small plates from an open kitchen in the same room. Not all the plates were perfect but many were and the worst were still great. A few well executed standards but mostly unique dishes that I had never experienced before. We felt pampered and fortunate to be there. We will be back!

We chose this restaurant by the reviews, and they were so correct! What a beautiful, delicious meal! The woman who served us was as knowledgeable as could be hoped for about both the food and the wine. We were delighted to meet the chef. One of our favorites that night was the "Mushroom Shooter" - soup from heaven, we called it. Don't miss the prix fixe dinner with the wine pairings.
