About Permanently Closed - David Todd's City Tavern
This restaurant is permanently closed.
David Todd's City Tavern is a contemporary American restaurant and lounge having an explicit wine bar as well. It offers vegetarian dishes for those who are on a diet and also has an el fresco dining area. The interior of the restaurant is comprised of 2 elongated dining areas, with each one running parallel to the other one to provide a good semblance of privacy. The bar at David Todd's City Tavern is in a separate area which consists of its own dining setting.
David Todd's City Tavern's special meals include Parisian pizza, fried calamari, duck confit tacos, foie gras burgers and veal Demi. The restaurant allows the patrons to indulge in tartare testing as they enjoy their salmon, tuna and avocado-mango relishes.

David Todd's City Tavern - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Not a great experience. To be fair it was our second time at David Todd's; we returned because dinner was wonderful the first time. This time we did't enjoy.... our drinks (some sort of Gin lemonade), the salad (Celeriac Salad), the entree (the salmon was delicious but the sides were incredibly salty), or dessert. But the location is ideal if you are attending MPAC!
"We love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. It was our second time back for dinner and we were not disappointed. The fried oysters were amazing and the beet salad was refreshing. We loved the braised short ribs, tender beyond believe. Service was friendly and very attentive. As for cocktails, had the Russian Mule, refreshing and fantastic!" We will be back.
The food was well prepared and very good. But the waitress we had was awful. The service itself in getting the food to the table was not bad. They have food runners but the interaction with the waitress was less than pleasant and awkward. It almost seemed like they were understaffed for servicing the tables. She was not friendly at all and gave impression that it was a burden to assist. We waited a long time to actually order and the overall mood of the waitress was very bad. I would second guess going back or sending others on the chance of having another bad server experience.
Way too noisy in the bar area. We went on a Saturday night (and good for them that it was so busy) but you can't even have a conversation. The dining room was a little better to hear. Our waiter was just average, the table wobbled the whole time, and it the whole service experience was nothing special. Our wine by the glass had stuff floating in it, but we couldn't get the waiter, so we removed it and drank it anyway. The food was actually good...but for $29.00, they should at least put a potato on the plate. Steak house style "sides" just don't make sense in this place.
This is a really good restaurant with a varied and imaginative menu. It's got a lively scene in the adjacent bar, which is not intrusive except that they play the same house music in the dining room as in the bar. It just doesn't fit with the dining room atmosphere.
Decent place with great location. Nice menu and food was well prepared to order though all seemed to be lacking just a bit in taste. Noticed that many local restaurants seem complacent with high demand. Would like a place like this to take it up just a bit in the food category without getting stuffy. Wait staff good but need a bit more in training. Our waiter let us miss the start of our show and at times was a step or two from snooty. Another couldn't answer a simple menu question because she "was only there a few days". All were very pleasant and professional. Bar area looked interesting. Pricing expected for area.
My family was in New Jersey for my sister's graduation so we were not familiar with the area. We found David Todd's through Trip Advisor and the concierge at our hotel recommended it as well. We ended up with our party of 8 in a private room with a wonderful server, Shelly. We had a great meal and a memorable occasion.
Food was okay but felt overpriced for the serving size. The service was poor. Confusion on the order and when it was delivered there was no care in placing the ordered meal to the rightful guest. We had to all switch our dinners over to each other. There was a lack of care and attentiveness and our waiter disappeared which made the wait time for the check at the end of the meal, very long and frustrating.
The service was great, noise and ambiance were very good for a nice relaxing dinner before a concert. However, the chef must have dropped the box of salt in the food because it was very salty. Both my wife's dinner and mind were too salty. Would not good back.
Great Restaurant in the middle of Morristown. Busy, the in-spot, very lively, filled with a young energetic crowd --- with all of this --- there is a lot going on. But, surprise they have really good and interesting choices for food. Although, keep in mind, if you are looking for a quiet evening for two, D.T. will not do. Service could use some polishing and personality. Great place for a group looking for a fun; vibrant atmosphere. Bar is a great area for a drink and snacks, too!
Very diverse menu, as well as good specials. Food is always very good, highly recommend. I prefer to eat at the bar but the dining room is very nice as well. Bar tenders could be more friendly and provide better service but overall its a very good place that I go to frequently.
First time here and had a very enjoyable experience. I ordered the vegetable soufflé to have something different and was not disappointed! It was fantastic!! Our waiter was helpful and knowledgable, particularly about wine recommendations. Will definitely return!
had a reservation for4 at 6 before a show at the Mayo - we were seated promptly and the server took care of drink orders right away. Seemed they ran out of the chicken special pretty quickly - it was 6:00 and they only had 1 left for the night - that doesn't seem right. My husband had the sausage of the day - it was made with chicken with some very bright slaw underneath it - the sausage was excellent - juicy, hot, and full of flavor without behing overly spiced and the slaw was a nice balance to the sausage. I had the chicken special (while the other person at our table had to change their order to something else). It was quite delicious and came iwth a wonderful rich sauce and excellent au gratin potatoes. The peas and onions were ok, nothing special. My husband had the scallops as a main and the other guest had the duck - everyone cleared their plates. Overall the food was very good, the service was very good and we would certainly return for dinner before a show again or just for dinner. Nice ambience and atmosphere. We also went back to the bar after the show for some after dinner drinks and that was a nice experience as well - nice bar - good selection of scotches and bourbons - all around a really nice evening!
We had a 6 pm dinner reservation prior to an 8 pm Mayo curtain. We were able to park right across the street on a very cold night. My DH had to go put some quarters in the meter before dessert. We had the table looking right out on South Street. Our server was excellent. The food was very good. I had beet salad, scallops and the pear strudel with some very good coffee. My DH had the onion soup, scallops as they were out of tuna and some sort of chocolate cake which he said was excellent. We look forward to returning to David Todd's when we go to another Mayo performance and even if we are just planning to be in the area.
We were disappointed in the food, the short rib Mac cheese was dry and tasted like it was made earlier and reheated. The fried calamari was rubbery with a jarred sauce. The red fish tasted like it was over seasoned with creole seasoning, you couldn't taste the fish itself. The one good thing we had was the pork mignon. We would not go back for dinner but maybe a drink at the bar.
Service and decor were impeccable. I started off with onion soup which was outstanding but slightly too salty. My date had mushroom soup special which was brimming with said mushrooms. Creamy but not too rich. I had poached filet mignon and the horse radish sauce was an excellent topping. My gf had scallops which were seared to perfection. A shared flourless chocolate cake was a good palate clearing ending. Good selection of beers and wine for a fair price
We went for lunch on a saturday. It was fairly quiet, but I could see how the noise level could rise.We both had applewood cheddar burgers done medium as we asked. The burgers were great. They came with fries which I normally could care less, but these were crisp and freshly made. We will be back for dinner another night.
We have been to David Todd's twice and both times sat in the bar area. In both cases, we were very impressed by our server's attentiveness and the timing of the drinks and food. The first visit was pre and post theatre/concert with 4 people. The second time visiting, we were a group of almost 20 people and same server provided amazing attention to our pre-concert timing as well as getting everyone drinks and orders in a perfectly timed fashion. The menu is varied enough that there is something for everyone, prepared and presented in simple, yet satisfying way. Food is not outstanding, just fresh, simple and flavorful. There are a number of side dishes/appetizers that were shared by our larger group on the second visit. Bar tenders are on their game which to me, signals the start of a great evening.
We were searching for a casual Saturday night meal and found an available reservation for 7:15pm. Then a front parking space opened up. Upon entering this vibrant tavern and we were told we would be seated at the quiet section. Not sure who I spoke to about wishing we could be seated in the busy bar area, but miraculously, we found ourselves seated there. Drinks were creative, service was attentive and dinner was unpretentiously creative and delicious. The Louisiana Red Fish was amazing!
It was like the stars were all aligned for a perfect night. Would definitely come back and recommend to others.
Enjoyed lunch with a friend here last week. Both of us had the beet salad, I added grilled chicken, she added salmon and we both were very happy. Salad is 90% beets with only a small amount of lettuce, so keep that in mind, even though we loved it anyway. Service was very helpful and attentive, looking forward to dining there again soon!
Have been to David Todd's a few times. Food has been consistent and fabulous each time. Service this time was not great. Not sure what was wrong with our waiter….must have been having a bad night. He almost seemed almost bored and was blasé. If this happens with the service again I will speak with a manager. This restaurant should not get bad reviews due to a poor wait staff, because the food is delicious.
My wife and I dined at David Todd's Saturday evening. As usual, everything - the ambience, the food, the service, the personal attention by management - was impeccable. From the time we entered David Todd's, the warmth exuded by Jenny, the service and attention to detail by Andrew and Sebastian, were superb. Our kudos to both David and Todd - the 'back of the house' and the 'front of the house', respectively, for their personnel selection, staff training and personal warmth. What can we say, but Thank You, All. See you soon.
Too much salt in one salad, too little in an entree, overdone perhaps previously frozen cod without the promised spice. But good beef and coq au vin, nice wine, beer and scotch list. Pleasant dining room well spaced tables, but no noise damping and thump of the bar music makes conversation difficult. Good people trying hard for good service but understaffed. Small portions and pours, but relatively low pricing. Inconsistent within the meal and better sometimes than others.
We arrived at 5 pm for a early pre show dinner .My reservations were for 5:30 so the two of us sat at the bar which was empty. There were at least three servers chatting and frankly ignoring us. Finally, a woman came took our order but was visibly annoyed. It took another ten minutes to get another drink when I was finished.
The dining staff was another story they were just great...no complaints at all and the food was excellent.
They need to work on the bar...really unacceptable especially with no other people seated there.
It has been a few years since we ate at DT's. It was exactly as I remember...okay. The food is good, nothing to rave about. The service is downright strange. Both times we had wait staff that really didn't seem to want to be there and the hostess was downright odd, barely acknowledging us. The atmosphere is the best part, and for that, we may go back in another two years. Very warm, lively environment fit for a cold night (which it was). Cool bar area. They may need to step up their food game with some new, really great restaurant options opening in town.
A month ago we celebrated a birthday here with a group of 6. We were so impressed (service incredible, food wonderful). So we booked again for another celebration, this time for 7 people. Couldn't have been worse. Had to sit in bar which was too loud for conversation. Our server was rude (when he deigned to show up) and food was over salted . I cancelled an upcoming office holiday gathering here due to this recent experience. Bizarre.
