David Todd's City Tavern is a contemporary American restaurant and lounge having an explicit wine bar as well. It offers vegetarian dishes for those who are on a diet and also has an el fresco dining area. The interior of the restaurant is comprised of 2 elongated dining areas, with each one running parallel to the other one to provide a good semblance of privacy. The bar at David Todd's City Tavern is in a separate area which consists of its own dining setting.
David Todd's City Tavern's special meals include Parisian pizza, fried calamari, duck confit tacos, foie gras burgers and veal Demi. The restaurant allows the patrons to indulge in tartare testing as they enjoy their salmon, tuna and avocado-mango relishes.
I was entertaining last minute guests from overseas, and I'm glad we went with David Todd's. The daily app (sausage) went perfectly with the drinks, and the duck confit tacos were tender and balanced. It was refreshing to see a restaurant with trendy food remember that appetizers are meant to excite the appetite, not to just show off flavors. For the entrée, several of us had the foie grois burger. Medium rare was a true medium rare, and the amount of foie grois was quite substantial. Definitely among one of my favorite burgers in the country, if the quality is consistent. My guests were pleased with their entrées as well. All in all, I'll definitely be back!
We enjoyed our meal and the service was great. There were not a lot of people in the restaurant as it was the Memorial Day weekend so that probably helped keep the noise level quiet. We will definitely return to David Todd's.
Every time we try this Restaurant we are very pleased. Food is delicious and dishes presentation is very chic!
We don't come here often, but my husband and I brought our son this past weekend. We dined early for a Saturday (6:30). For there only being four tables at that time, it took quite some time to get our drink and food order put in. We weren't exactly sure what was going on there. After the slow start, we had a very good meal. We started with the calamari and "sausage of the day" (chorizo). Both were very good. I especially liked the sauce on the calamari. For diner, my husband enjoyed the duck breast but thought the sides with it were pretty lacking in flavor. I had the mussel appetizer and spinach salad. The spinach salad was really nice. The mussels were in a nicely flavored sauce, although a bit too much of the sauce (think buttery soup). My son had the fried chicken dish which he ate every bite of and enjoyed. Great comfort food meal! Overall a solid meal. Service, as in the past is fine -never outstanding.
Food was alright but I think is time to update the menu, service was efficient, like the bar side.
We felt that it was grossly overpriced for the quality of the food they serve
Came here for dinner before a show at MPAC. Though it was early and the restaurant was not yet crowded, our server seemed to be bewildered throughout the service.
The first disappointment came when the restaurant menu lacked a vegetarian option that had been posted online. The waiter dismissed the discrepancy, saying that it had been updated for spring (so why not update it online as well?). He offered to check the kitchen to see if the chef had any vegetarian options available. When he returned to take our food order and we asked, he said, "I never got a chance to ask."
The next disappointment was with the drinks. I ordered a vodka martini with olives. The drink came with no olives. I asked for them a few times. The olives never came. I ordered a second drink early in the meal. When it hadn't come out by the time I had finished eating, I canceled the order. She ordered a Moscow Mule. It was cloyingly sweet. Not what was expected. She switched to wine.
Positives--food was tasty. I had fish and chips; she had the pasta. ambiance was pleasant.
Though, they were out of mussels for the moule mariniere. Which is always exquisite. I tried the tri-colored beet salad along with the beef & lamb sliders and was very pleased! Always a great meal at David Todd's!
Food was good and it is convenient to the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Service was too slow. There were only two people serving too many tables thus poor attention and very slow service. We passed on dessert and coffee for this reason. Also we ordered multiple appetizers and asked that they be divided between the two of us. Lack of attention to detail and the devision was not equal. I got all the pecans on my plate and my friend got one and all the yellow beets? This does not happen at other restaurants. We would not want to sit in the back of the place as the decor is depressing . Needs something done to up the ambiance. We would like to give it another try since this was our first time there.
We have had really good experiences here, unfortunately last Friday was underwhelming. It started good, we (party of 4) had reservations requesting a booth, and we were seated right away. Then, when our waiter came to the table, you could tell he was having a bad night. Looking around, all the waitstaff were rushing around. When we asked if he was ok, he said they were so busy because Jewel was in town and there also was a large loud group so things were going to be backed up in the kitchen. Net net, oysters as an app were spectacular. Wine list was great, dinner tasted good but was served lukewarm. We will be back, but have to say, it wasn't our best experience at David Todd's... It was just an "off night" we hope.
This is our 3rd time at David Todd's. It is our go to place when watching a show at MPAC. The first two times we went the food and service were excellent. In fact Todd introduced himself to us on our first dinner. Although the crowd tends to lean towards the older side, we didn't mind because we were so fixated on how delicious everything was.
This trip...meh. The menu seemed to have be scaled down. Online showed much better options. We ordered the mussels as starters and the scallops and mahi mahi as entrees. The accompanying vegetables with the meals were way off. The scallops had dried lima beans and mushy shiitake. The mahi mahi had minced bok choy. The mussels on the other hand were out of this world.
Service was not as personable as we experienced previously. Although she did get the food out quickly since we had a show to catch. Thank you for that.
Overall it was a miss for us this time.
We truly enjoyed the food and drinks, but were dissatisfied with the service. It was simply mediocre.
Morristown has dozens of restaurants and bars, but many of them are either steak houses, Italian eateries of one kind or another, or downscale American. David Todd's goes for a more unusual mix with a large wine selection. The food was simple, well prepared, and somewhat overpriced. The decor is ho-hum tavern style. Service was slow, though we told them we needed to leave early. Not bad if you're in Morristown and want to eat someplace different.
We shared 3 bottles of wine among the 5 of us so you might be tempted to think that we didn't notice the service. However, when our server left in the middle of dinner without notifying us, (in my opinion, a big no-no) we became the responsibility of two very rude servers. At one point, we even noticed them rolling their eyes when we asked about our server, Heather's, departure. Because she neglected to tell us she was leaving, of course we asked, only to be met with rude attitudes. This was a business dinner so we left a tip but very much regret doing so.
Food is almost inedible. We were a group of six, and have never left a review here before. This was a universal bad meal. Every single appetizer and main was actually bad. It tasted gross. Pan seared tuna? How bout still frozen in the middle??? With so many great options in the area avoid this place.
We had a superb meal here last weekend. The service as perfect, our waiter Sebastian was attentive but not pushy. Everyone in our group of 6 enjoyed their meals and the bar was awesome. This place is a must try in Morristown
Good spot for a casual dinner. Great service, friendly and helpful stuff. The menu was good and nice variety, rich wine list. We would recommend this place to other people.
Its been a while since returning here. Menu has been updated since my last sit down.
Service was good however the food was just eh..
Was pretty energetic as they were hosting a tasting.
Spot on with entrees pairing with wine, just over the top. Unfortunately the table next to us was so loud we could hear ourselves talk.
My husband and I went on a weekend night and sat at a table in the bar area. The wine, food and service were all great. If you want a more private/not getting bumped into by passerby dining experience here go with a group and request a table in the room off to the side. Most of the two-person tables appear to be in the bar area only .
Service was a bit slow, granted, a large table on Saturday night. Had trouble working with vegan options, which was weird since we had great vegan accommodation in the past.
Seemed the place was a bit overwhelmed. Bathrooms messy, lack of communication, staff not really supportive of each other.
The food was very good but very pricey. Didn't feel I got my monies worth.
We had a show at the MPAC on Valentines day and made reservation for dinner. Got there a bit earlier then expected and sat down immediately and glad we did... the place got packed. The food was great and also the staff. Next time we go back we'll sit in the awesome bar area...
I was able to get a table that I reserved for Valentine's day on the same day, so I was very happy about that. The food was extremely flavorful, the atmosphere was excellent, and we enjoyed our dinner. I was very unhappy with the server, although looking at other tables I noticed the other servers were much more professional. I've been a waiter, and I always leave a tip, but I do tip based on the service. I almost always tip 20%, 15 for standard service, and 10 if the service was unacceptable. Our server didn't bother to read us the specials, leading me to believe there were none (until I overheard another server reading them off). She came to the table and asked if we'd like water, then made us wait for our drink order. When she did take the drink order she finally brought them over and quickly walked away before bothering to ask if we were ready to order any food. When she finally did return to take our order that was probably the last we saw of her. She did come to ask us if everything was good: but after we'd already finished. I felt like they were understaffed and must have had someone helping out because I did feel like it wasn't the best service. Again, this may be nitpicking for some, but for someone who has been a server I expect a bit more in an establishment that costs top dollar.
Good menu selection. Food well prepared.
This was my fourth visit..two orders of coq a vin were horrible - a few pieces of overcooked stewed chicken thrown into a bowl of bad rice and dishwater...very disappointing.
We've been to DT's before and came back for a Valentine's Day dinner. We had a later reservation and had a lovely evening. No rush out the door and our server, Katarina, actually remembered us from the last time we were there a few months ago.
Great food, drink and ambiance. I especially appreciate that it wasn't a problem to make a decaf cappuccino for me at the end of the night.
We will continue to patronize DT's - we always leave happy!
Thanks for a great night, again!
Been looking for a place with good cocktails and this did not disappoint. Really enjoyed the pear martinin, lychee martini, and the spicy kiwi martini. Had the fois gras burger. The fois gras was overcooked but the burger was done just right. Had the flight of oysters, which was tasty, but a bit overpriced.
Delicious braised lamb shank with mashed sweet potato. Unique combination. Nicely done.
Eclectic menu and very lively atmosphere. Dinner was very enjoyable.
Two rooms - one side is quiet and the other is where the bar is. If you like energetic and staff with great personalities and love their job, D&T is the place. D&Ts is one of my favs in MoTown just because of the energy, the oysters, and a tasty selection of apps and entrees that the staff is very knowledgeable about. And don't get me started on their specials! WoW!!
This is a good place for dinner prior to a show at the Mayo Center. Tell your server you are going to a show and you will get there on time. We appreciated the number of lighter choices on the menu, well suited prior to a two hour performance.
Overall, tasty food. But for entrees that can go into the $30 range per plate, the actual protein given to customers, particularly on the fish dishes, is tiny. Went to dinner with my parents -- thankfully, I ordered a the lamb shank, which was, honestly, quite good and filling, however, both my parents had fish (red fish and alaskan cod), and their plates came out, and we all asked where the rest of the fish was. While tasty, the meal was generally overpriced for such small portions. Additionally, the wait staff was not exactly very friendly. Sadly, unlikely I'll be coming back here, as I had high expectations.
They have a very unique menu and it's pretty pricey but the food quality is great and the wine list is good (with options for flights!)
Perfect pre-theater dining! Always enjoyable!
We haven't been to David todds for a year or two, and it certainly was not the restaurant we remember. Food was average, nothing special for the price. Service was lousy- had to track down the waiter several times. Won't go back anytime soon.
We wanted an early meal for First Night and found it at David Todd's. The meal was delicious with good choices and the service could not have been friendlier and more attentive. We have eaten there previously.....but this was the perfect place to go to before the "First Night" that Morristown puts on each year.
Food and service were excellent but it was a bit strange that it was so empty at 8:30 on a Saturday night.
We went with friends for drinks and snacks. When I took my first bit into the Olive bread I got a whole olive pit! It could have been a very big disaster.
The food and service were OK.
Good food with broad selections and attentive service
