Darlington House Ratings and Reviews
I came to Darlington House with a few friends. We were politely greeted and seated in what we thought was the best table in the house, the window. It was a beautiful warm day so we asked the windows to be open. Nice scenery and delicious food. Our server Jose was very friendly and attentive. He offered all their specials not on the menu and I must say the Branzino was fantastic. My friend had the seafood pasta and was delicious. I will come back here more often.
The food was delicious! Our server was friendly and enthusiastic but the whole service process was slow and out of order (we got asked what drinks we wanted before we had the wine list). It was Valentine's Day and so the rush was foreseeable both for us as customers, but also for them as hosts. You have to go downstairs into the bar to use the restroom and there was a stale beer (and other bad smells) odor heading downstairs that was unpleasant... and the bathroom itself was in dire need of attention. Would be worth going back to on a slower night because the entree was amazing. I just wouldn't recommend it during a rush!
The food was good but not memorable in any way. There was nothing wrong or negative I would add to that. The setting was pleasing but noisy when fully populated. Service was a little slow but not terrible. All and all, a pleasing experience but outstanding it was not. The special which both my wife and I both had was pricey and not a good value.
My wife and I had a very good meal, good atmosphere. It was very loud and lively, but we love that. For a quiet dinner this is not the place. Servers seemed rushed/frantic most of the night but likely short a server.
Had the risotto frutti di mare, very very good!
The earlier you arrive the quieter it will be. There was a table that arrived around 7:30 next to us (millennials who were curing with loud talking) and the staff didn't do anything to quiet them, despite our asking. Otherwise it has always been a great restaurant.
The concierge at the hotel recommended this restaurant, and it was a very good choice. It was quiet with a nice ambiance in a very convenient locale (DuPont red line access).
The staff was engaging. The food was delicious. It was a nice "step up" of good food prepared well without the trappings of pretentiousness that often is a side dish at a more upscale place.
I recommend Darlington House for a good meal with a friend or two whose time you value and experience you enjoy.
Darlington House gets my Arnold S award .... "I'll be back!"
Late dinner with friends, the food and service was mediocre at best and they ran out of a dish I order but didn't let me know until all the food was served to the other guests. Also, they kept getting our orders wrong and the food came out cold. Not sure how this restaurant got such high reviews but my experience was very disappointing.
Great atmosphere in the very cozy but functional converted townhome/bay window. We arrived early for our reservation, it was very busy but were able to sit at the very nice bar counter at the back while we waited for our table, when things were moving a bit slowly we were served complimentary caprese bruschetta, delicious. Dinner was delicious, many great selections on the menu and met the owner and the chef and discussed some other favorite Italian dishes with them. It was a very busy night, post-Women's March Saturday, staff was busy but obviously looking out for each other and all the diners. Very very friendly atmosphere, delicious food. Definitely will go there again next time I am D.C.
All in all it was a very good experience. The reason for 3 stars on food was several of the pastas were a bit too al dente and light on the sauce. We should have just sent those back; given how good the staff was I bet it would have been taken care of easily. I would try to avoid downstairs seating as it was dark and dingy; more like a pub. And it smelled smoky. Upstairs was nice and had a good vibe.
The kitchen forgot the hollandais sauce for the eggs benedict. We had to ask twice before we got the sauce. By then the eggs were cold. Our table was set without small bread plates, although other tables had them. Our waitress served us small donut holes with chocolate sauce without bringing us small plates. This restaurant used to be one of my favorites, but It has gone downhill.
Christmas Eve dinner with our family, could not have been better! Very pretty, warm, atmosphere in historic row house right in DuPont Circle. We are local to this neighborhood and Darlington House is a favorite. The service is always good, but Christmas Eve was exceptional, everyone from our waiter to the manager made us feel like family. House made pasta was delicious, and so was the salmon and my husbands steak. Highly recommend !
This place is elegant/casual. Plenty nice, attractive linen draped and upscale. But not in the least bit self-conscious or stuffy. Friendly while efficient wait staff. Well presented dishes. Cooked to perfection without being overloaded with every possible ingredient under the sun. This is a fine, tasty, well run and quite pleasant place to dine for an evening of friendship and/or conversation. I've visited for dinner multiple times spread over the last several years and every time I have left knowing that when I'm next in DC, I'll be coming back!
I was very anxious to try Darlington house after visiting during an Italian food tour of DC. The food did not disappoint. However the service could have been much better. Our table of five finished our appetizers and drinks before our server returned to take our entrée order. We also had to ask for bread three times before it was finally brought to the table. I would give it another shot because of the quality of the food, and both the dining room and the bar downstairs are worth a look.
