Darlington House Ratings and Reviews
Found this little treasure at Dupont Circle area and was very happy!! Great service, great food and a pleasant atmosphere. We are always looking for good places to eat in DC and Darlington House is now one of them. There is a cozy little pub on the lower level too!! Will be back to this fine place!!
We came here on a busy night and knew that we wouldn’t have attentive service, however, the service was not only non attentive but down right disrespectful. I would recommend having a nice meal somewhere else in the city that will give you a pleasurable experience.
Overall we had a great night and an incredible value for RW. Would certainly recommend. Our server was funny and entertaining, though he was a little too flirtatious with one member in our party. It was very loud but it was Saturday night so it comes with the territory. Great location. The butternut squash tortellini was incredible. Will be back for sure.
We made a reservation and then when we arrived we were told we couldn’t be seated in the main dining room and had to be seated in the downstairs bar area which was very very LOUD. We waited over an hour to get our first course of salads and then another hour for our main meal. Nobody working was apologetic to the situation and the meal ended up being outrageously expensive because we had to continue to order bottles of wine to compensate for the long wait. Overall the food was fine but not fantastic. Will not return. Would not recommend.
I have been to the Darlington House on many occasions and many of those times we have bought out the place either for a birthday or wedding. Today in particular we went for restaurant week and the food, as usual, was delicious. They have an array of options to chose from and everything seems so fresh.
The food was delicious from beginning to end. The service is extremely friendly and helpful. The decor is charming and it's never too noisy so conversation is comfortable. I would highly recommend the Darlington house for a nice get together with friend and family.
It had been a while since my last visit, and I must say Darlington House looks, and is, better than ever: the dining room has been re-decorated since the last time I was there several years ago, and the ambiance is much brighter and more welcoming. Cordial staff was pleasant and most accommodating--immediately responding to our request that the music (which was great!) be turned down a bit in order not to hamper conversation. My friend and I especially appreciated not feeling as if the wait staff were "circling," waiting for us to leave so the table could be flipped! We'll let people know Darlington House is a neighborhood gem...WSM
I worked in the restaurant industry for over 15 years, from casual chain restaurants to upscale fine dining. I know what good service should be. My experience tonight was awful. The ambiance was good, a renovated older house. It showed promise. The menu is classic Italian-American. If executed right, can be great comfort food. The fresh pasta was done well, but the evening was soured by the service. It was unclear to us who our server was. Initially someone took our order, but we never saw him again. Our food came, but when it came time for our second drinks, no one would make eye contact with us or come to the table. Eventually the hostess ended up 'waiting' on us, bringing us drinks, dessert, and our ticket. Ultimately I'd rather spend my money where I feel wanted. We don't plan on going back.
It was a nice place with atmosphere, but you can find that most anywhere. I come from an area of the country with great Italian eateries. They fell short in their attempt to deliver on that
However, the staff was attentive and friendly. I just feel kitchen could use some real help.
I was really let down by this experience. The service was amazing, but the food was just not good at all. The calamari was rubbery and way too salty, and I even love salty. The pasta dish with broccoli was good, but not great, and definitely not worth the price. I was expecting way better food based on the reviews. Even the desserts - molten chocolate cake and the cannoli was a huge letdown. It all just tasted like cheap store bought sweets. I would not go again.
It was a Saturday night and we were worried that the place was empty. We were the only couple in the entire restaurant from 4 to 6:30 pm. We hope that the drop in business was due to extremely cold weather. The food was very rich and delicious; we enjoyed the Butternut Squash Tortellini and Lasagna. Small portions, and pricey, and probably a little over priced for the quality compared to other restaurants in the area. A few times during our dinner, they played obnoxious rap music, that did not match the ambiance. I don't think they actually monitor reservations on Open Table. We made a reservation and indicated that it was our anniversary. When we showed up, they were not expecting us and did not acknowledge our reservation or celebration. Over all, despite the poor music selection, we enjoyed the intimacy of having the place to ourselves.
My pasta special - linguini with shrimp and scallops - was totally tasteless. My friend's pasta (I forget which one it was) was ok. When asked by our waiter if we wanted coffee after dinner, we said "yes, please" and ordered a cappuccino and a machiato. We waited and waited and they never came so when someone else dropped the bill on our table we just paid and left.
My experience at Darlington House was underwhelming. Everything was off. I will not go back.
To start, the hostess tried to seat my husband and I at a tiny table between two other sets of diners even though there were many other open tables spread out across the dining room (and other diners sprinkled throughout). Someone, the manager I presume, intervened and asked the hostess to seat us in an area with a little more space. We were taken to a table in the bar area which is directly down the hall from the front door. Every time the door opened a gust of cold air shot down the hallway and into the area in which we were seated. I was quite cold, and would've preferred to dine sardine-style instead.
The menu had not been proof-read for errors before printing - words were missing from descriptions and there were grammatical mistakes.
The food was expensive for what we received. My husband got the steak which was very fatty (and not in a good marbled kind of way. There was lots of gristle). I had the butternut squash tortelloni which came dressed with a parmesan, butter and sage sauce which was like a thin alfredo-style sauce. It just missed the mark .
Service was underwhelming. It was hard to get the attention of servers so much so that diners around the restaurant were raising their hands to catch someone's attention.
Great night as friends first time to Darlington House. Relaxed at bar as we all waited for everyone to show up. Great drinks very nice and helpful bartender. Great service at table. salads to start and pasta and chicken dishes were perfect. Exc3ellent food. Service is always on!
We went to Darlington House on a whim to celebrate a birthday, and it was fabulous! Their pasta is made in-house daily, and everything we had -- from the ravioli to the butternut tortelloni to the saffron risotto of the day -- was absolutely delicious. Our server made several excellent recommendations, and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I will definitely be returning!
