Thank you for the outstanding service and accommodating a large party for Easter brunch. Service and food were excellent. We will be back.
Lovely brunch experience. Relaxed yet attentive wait staff.Delicious food.
When I lived in DC, this was a favorite spot for dinner for me and my friends. I've come back for a visit a year later, and it's just as good as I remember.
Wildly expensive for the portions, WOW. A standard omelette was almost $20. It was the Italian omelette and seemed like 2 eggs, some fresh mozzarella, wet balsamic, basil leaves, and I can't even remember the tomatoes. It was small by any definition and came with a tiny portion of breakfast potatoes, literally a pill-container filled with one red grape, one green grape, and a sliver of strawberry, and two triangles of what seemed like Wonderbread white toast. I never leave reviews, but I was stunned at the dismal value for money at Darlington House.
They had some lovely live music, a local musician playing guitar and singing. She was very talented, but the volume was a bit high for the small space. We were struggling to hear each other speak at the same table, but we were very close to her.
Because there were a few big groups at this Sunday brunch, service was slow. The folks at the restaurant apologized profusely and made it up to us with a complimentary cocktail. That showed some class.
Came here with a large group on my birthday. The ambiance was really nice and I appreciated that they took note of our request to be by the window. However, there were a few disappointing moments.
Since we had 10 people, I made a note to call hours before our reservation to see what the policy was for splitting checks so our group could accommodate however needed. I was told by the hostess that as long as we told our server before ordering anything that we wanted to do separate checks, that it was no problem. Once we all sat down and were greeted, we told our server this and he said he had no problem with it as long as we didn't change seats. Easy, no problem. During dinner, he was also quite flirty to me and other girls in the group which was offputting. Not really why I come to a restaurant. I appreciate friendliness but this was a bit over the top. A few of us had asked for water from the moment we sat down and had to ask 4 times and still never got it until we mentioned this to the backwaiter, who was very prompt.
When it was time to get our check he said he couldn't split them... which was ridiculous per the conversation we had literally an hour and a half before that moment.
TL;DR - The ambiance was fantastic. Food ok, overpriced in my opinion but that's DC for you. Service wasn't horrible but not up to snuff for the price they charge. The waiter was too flirty and unaccommodating to our request for separate checks. I worked in fine dining for many years, splitting checks is not difficult. We also would have been fine if they couldn't do this and told us when I called. We would have been able to do whatever they needed from us as a large group.
My boyfriend & I came here while visiting DC and we absolutely loved it. The space is great for couples and the food was excellent.
This was truly the worst dining experience I have had in DC in a long, long time. I have lived in DC 12 years and I can't recall ever having such horrible Italian food. The pastas (we ordered three) looked and tasted as though they had been re-heated in a microwave and originally cooked maybe days in advance, and were bland, at best. The Gorgonzola gnocchi was nowhere near as good as the Trader Joe's frozen gnocchi you can make on your stovetop; the "special" risotto was in a pool of grease; and I forget what the other pasta was that we had, which just speaks to the fact it was bland (and I remember it just being soggy and looked re-heated, like it had been microwaved). Even the fried calamari and shrimp appetizer was bad -- so dry, how can you mess up fried calamari? Maggianos or Buca di Beppo have better Italian food. Not to mention this was an expensive meal -- and the food was a horrendous quality. I would only rate it overall 2 stars because the service was good and everyone was friendly and attentive, but I was honestly shocked at how bad the food was and would never go back or recommend this to anyone.
This was my second time going to Darlington House and we were not disappointed. The service was wonderful, the food was delicious, and the ambience was on point. Perfect for a date night or a work dinner.
I am particularly impressed with the customer service even after we left the restaurant. Wonderful place and great location!
I held my friends' small wedding dinner, on March 29th (Fri), and I requested that you should serve a cake for $30 that says “Happy Wedding” and menus that say on the top “Congratulations” through Patricia about 2 weeks ago, and she agreed to arrange them. But nobody took care of them last Friday….I asked a floor manager to do so based on my above request about 2 weeks ago, but the manager only said “Patricia is not here, so I’m not sure what your request is like,” and he only agreed to serve a tiny Tiramisu for 2 people on the top “Congratulations, but the character (made by chocolate) was really horrible, and I’m totally uncomfortable with your services then. The manager served a free bottle of champagne later, but actually we already drank a lot, so it was nonsense! Your services spoiled our wonderful party so much, and I totally can't request this kind of horrible restaurant to my friends!!
A Great Place for a Gathering
We were a group of 16 people looking to relax after a long day of meetings. The staff at The Darlington House made us comfortable and welcome, anticipating our every need. The food was delicious and our cozy table in the bar area was perfect for group conversation. We will definitely go back!
The food and ambiance were great. There are two big group next to our table. So we have to wait and wait, and had to call servers.
I was attending a conference and my husband joined me for a few days. We made a reservation at Darlington House and we’re not disappointed. Great staff, spectacular food and a wonderful evening.
Went for Sunday brunch and had a delightful time. Beautiful setting with fabulous food and attentive service. A winner.
The food was exceptional. Period. The setting and ambience was beautiful. The service was very friendly but mistake-prone. They brought out the wrong order for one member of my party (which she accepted and agreed to). The check was subsequently not properly processed. There were additional issues with our credit card/cash payments. Definitely dine here but consider paying only in cash or asking for separate checks.
Fantastic dinner for 7...Ernest was an outstanding master server and the food was absolutely delicious, every bite! Highly recommend!!!
I’ve been here several times and have always enjoyed it. The pasta is homemade and wonderful. This visit was noisy, but I believe that isn’t usually the case.
Orders were wrong Food was mediocre at best. Don't know where they came up with our orders but sure another party was all wrong as well. Not DC quality. Time to close
We found Darlington House last year on a girls weekend in DC, and wanted to come back again. As usual it was so delicious! We shared a charcuterie plate and each had wonderful pastas. We’ll be back again!
Dining at Darlington House is always a pleasure. The food is excellent, but what puts it really on top is the spectacular service. I have never been disappointed...quite the contrary, I am always delighted!
Food was excellent and the service was lovely!
My husband and I were dining at the Darlington House for an intimate anniversary dinner, however, we had completely misread the ambiance from the website and reviews. This restaurant is more of a good birthday/special occasion spot where locals go to spend time on the weekends. The reason I would not recommend to a friend would be due to the service we received while there as well as smaller portion sizes than expected. Once our waiter knew were not having the best experience, he lost the smile and ignored us the rest of the evening. The hostess had to bring us our check (who was sympathetic and sweet) and we left still feeling hungry.
We were sat an hour after our reservation. The staff did what they could to make up for it but it put our plans for the night very far behind.
The ambiance and appetizers were good but our entrees were not very good. My husbands chicken parmigiana was probably the worst he has ever had. We will not be back!
Food was amazing, our waiter was super fun and engaging and the Birthday sonnet was everything and more. Thank you so my for making our trip so memorable. We will definitely be back on our next visit
Excellent variety of fresh pasta. Love the frito misto with calamari and shrimp. Fresh burrata is excellent.
Outstanding homemade pasta and fabulous service!! Amazing for a group or for a date. I would go back in a heartbeat!
We made reservations for Valentine’s Day far in advance based on the reviews and pictures online. Unfortunately when we arrived we were seated in the basement which looks like a cool music venue, but not at all what us (or anyone seated around us) were expecting for a nice sit down dinner. There was one wine menu for all tables, which one couple apparently didn’t want to give up so no one else could see what wines they had. Not that we’re very picky, but it’s nice to see what’s available. They offered a limited menu on Valentine’s Day which I didn’t see stated online (perhaps I just missed it though) so I couldn’t have what I was looking forward to having. What we did eat was pretty good, but for the price we had hoped for more & better.
We went here for Valentine's day dinner. It was very nice and and food was excellent. The tables were a little close, though.
Excellent food, drink and service. Ernesto is a Pro!
We went to the Darlington House for Valentine's Day and the service was awful! Probably, the worst we have ever had in the USA. For the whole time we felt like we were pressed to rush with our meal and leave as soon as possible to free the table for the next client. We asked for tap water and the waitress brought us a bottle of fancy sparkling water and then added normal water into my glass. We asked for two glasses of prosecco, but only received them AFTER the food was already brought. The waitress brought us a bill, though we didn't ask for it yet... We could feel that the only thing they care about is to make as much money out of as many clients as possible. Terrible experience! Food was good though. However, still wouldn't recommend it to a friend.
Food was way overprices. Bread was cold and stale. Pasta was hard, seems like old pasta. As if they did not want customer.
It’s a quick walk from DuPont metro
The pasta is homemade and excellent
Staff very friendly and attentive
Was a favourite place of mine when it was childe Harold and love coming back to this space - great food and good oldtime bar and beautiful space upstairs!
Great time to catch up with old friends have not seen in a while. I selected Darlington House as it’s perfect, food is so good and staff is awesome. Met everyone at bar with wine and cocktails. Dinner was calamari and salads to start. Seafood pasta, lasagna, steaks were our meals. Excellent flavors. Great time and staff make it wonderful.
Not sure if they were having an off night, but I feel compelled to share my experience. The food was not good at all - my cannelloni pasta was over cooked and the cheese on the caprese tasted like rubber. I was very disappointed since this restaurant had good reviews.
I was visiting from out of town and Darlington House was recommended from a DC friend. We went for the extended restaurant week menu and it was excellent! A wonderful, cozy find in the bustling DC area and the food was to die for! I would definitely put this restaurant on a return visit and would let friends know it's a fab place to go when in DC!
The service was a bit too slow for me. Additionally, I was not to impressed with the food as it was too bland.
Great food. Wonderful service.
Food was a bit bland and needed some salt - could be that they were pumping things out quickly for restaurant week, but the food was good enough I'd give it another try.
Their wine selection was definitely on the weaker end though, so be wary of that.
