Dante Ratings and Reviews
This was our second visit. On the first visit, EVERYTHING we ordered was fantastic. On this visit, we took the recommendations of the waiter and were happy with some things, disappointed in others (gnocci was fantastic, lamb appetizer was a little odd, chicken entree was great, pork shoulder entree was sweet and became cloying by the end. Desserts were both good.) I just wish all of the offerings were consistently good. We had a nice dinner regardless.
We were able to get a table for four outside on the patio and the was view great. You could see the whole city of Boston while enjoying some great food and drinks. They even had a bourbon slushi which was creative and refreshing. The arancini and bruschetta apps were delious. My spaghetti entree was really tasty and perfectly cooked. The big hit our table was the chicken it was so juicy and made the taste buds tingle. The deserts were just as good as the apps and entrees. My fritelle desert put an exclamation point on the whole meal.
Service was very good, food was inventive, well-prepared, very reasonably priced and presented nicely. Sat outside, great patio - low key and unpretentious. Good selection of primi and secondi. The octopus lacked flavor and the mix with beans was disappointing. Salt Cod was excellent, as was the arancini with mushrooms. Good portions for entrees. Liquor selection was not great - there were a number of premium brands not available. Overall great value for the prix fixe menu of $35 and will definitely recommend the restaurant to others. Looking forward to trying Il Casale in Belmont.
Hostess and waiter for very good. Food was mixed- carbonarra was too salty, gnocchi was amazing. Pork was ok, hanger steak was awesome. A little bit of a timing issue, with our first course coming right after being served appetizer, and being given the dessert menu while waiting for entrees. Food was good value for price, but wine list is very $$.
The outdoor space was stunning, wonderful view of the Charles River, and along a stretch without Memorial Drive so there's no traffic noise. The staff was also excellent, attentive without becoming annoying. The food, sadly, was forgettable. It's fine, there is nothing to complain about, but nothing surprised me. Risotto should not have a crunch to it. Still, I'd go back in summer, for the wonderful view at the very least.
I had the lamb tongues followed with the pancetta wrapped trout. These were not simple dishes by any means, and they were well executed, with some nice textures and a reasonably good balance of flavors. Both dishes were unfortunately clearly on the oversalted side, which becomes somewhat tiring after a few mouthfuls (hence the three stars). The service was good, although (and this is alas not specific to Dante) somewhat overbearing. It's only polite for the wait staff to check on the diners once, but three, four times and more becomes annoying. If I need something, I'll make sure to ask. But overall I like Dante. They are quite creative and there's still a lot of surprises in those dishes. And the wine list has some interesting items too.
We were a group of seven, looking forward to a birthday party. The food was fair but we should have been forewarned as we have to wait 50 minutes between our courses. We also had to wait another 45 minutes for our dessert. Our waitress proclaimed that all the desserts were individually prepared. When we complained to the chef, he said the desserts had only taken fifteen minutes to prepare. There was definitely something amiss with the management of the restaurant. When we wanted to pay our bill, it was only to find that our waitress had vanished as we wandered around the hotel trying to pay our bill. To add insult to injury, a whopping 20% gratuity had been added to the bill for services not rendered.
Much to my disappointment, the lemoncello-touched, chickpea-stuffed squid appetizer has come off the menu. The bartender was kind enough to comp me some olives and champagne to allay my infinite sadness. I'll have to come back and find my new "the best damn ____ in Boston" on the new menu.
We've dined at Dante's several times over the past 3 years and only once did the food not shine. The chef ( who we believe was off the night we were disappointed) is creative and using unique combinations of foods - always at the peak of freshness. We love the fish dishes.
Food was good, though not great. Everything was reasonably priced, especially with the $35 prix fixe meal (3 courses). The service, though, was atrocious. There seemed to be confusion about which waitress was covering our table, initially causing multiple people to take our drink orders. It ultimately devolved though to no waitress checking in on us or coming back to see if we needed anything (ie, it took ~30 min for someone to give us a dessert menu and that was only after we were finally able to stop somebody and demand a menu). Even after bringing this to one of the server's attention, she didn't seem to think it was a problem and thought they were doing a reasonable job. That alone is why we won't go back.
This is a fantastic outdoor dining spot on a nice summer evening. It is very entertaining to watch the joggers and dog walkers with the Charles River as a backdrop. My compaint is with the food. The outdoor dining setting is very casual but the food is gussied up, overpriced, and not that good! They would do better to serve a more casual Italian fare on the patio. I wouldn't go again unless it were just for drinks.
The server has definitely ruined my husbands experience. He will never dine there again. I had ordered a Rose wine to start and he did also. The waiter gave him a funny look at that point. We had ordered steaks and when they arrived we were going to order a hearty red wine but the waiter didn't even give us a chance to do so. He said to my husband "Don't you think you should order a hearty red wine with your steak." Maybe this waiter should go back to Harvard and take a class in "waiting tables" since he kept telling us that he was taking graduate courses at the institution.
Overall, an enjoyable dinner. A few notes. The trout we ordered was completely wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with asparagus, but had bones! The package said "eat all of me" but what a dangerous surprise. The flavor was fab, however. The roasted mushrooms totally over seasoned. The spinach...divine. Desserts wonderful. Great wine selection.
Had a great time at Dante. We ordered the 6 course Chef's Tasting menu with wines. Really enjoyed the different dishes, server was great, explained each course and the wine pairing. We also had two kids with us and they could not have been more accomodating. Would go there again for sure.
Ordered hanger steak medium rare. Came out medium well to well done; sent it back. Replacement came out well done approaching jerky; I gave up, as most of my party was close to done. Menu was a bit abstruse - it didn't seem to accurately describe all of the items. Then again, it seemed like most of the dishes had so much going on (too much) that translating it to menu was probably a feat in and of itself. Service was just okay; better service probably would've made up for shortcomings in other areas (and for Dante's price level, good to excellent service should be standard). If I go back it will be primarily to enjoy the outdoor seating, and I won't waste my time with a full meal. Try the desserts; they were the highlight of our meal.
Perfect outdoor lunch location in Cambridge. The $20 lunch menu was perfect with many great choices. The two courses include soup/salad first course and panini/pasta second course plus cookies for dessert. Service was great. Will definitely try Dante for dinner.
We went with the 3 course dinner offering and loved every morsel of our appetizer, entree, and dessert. All menu offerings were unique and just delicious. We will definitely go back to Dante and next time sit outside. Our table by the window afforded us views of the Charles and people watching of the folks on the boats, benches, and walkways. Our waiter and the rest of the waitstaff were very personable and attentive but not overly so. Enjoyed Dante a lot.
a great find hidden in the Sonesta hotel. Outstanding service and knowledgeable waitstaff (Chas). Food was refreshingly different from other upscale restaurants and priced well and most important -- delicious! Great view of the Charles River. We'll definately be back.
Dante's food is excellent, the pricing seems a bit tricky. The prix fixe menu is not really prefixe as almost every thing on it has an added price. To boot, there are no visible a la carte prices for entrees. It might be a smart business move, but we left feeling a little cheated (and overstuffed, since by ordering the 3 course meal you have to order too much food).
Creative menu and solid execution, but found dishes (fish, even) to be incredible heavy and rich. Has to make you wonder what they are trying to hide/make up for by using so much butter and fat?
Desserts were quite good, but hard to enjoy after such heavy entrees.
best gnocchi anywhere. like little pillows. daily crudo of raw fish was a knockout, accentuating hints of citrus and spice. an underrated restaurant, despite its accolades, that is truly one of the top in the city. knowledgeable staff and talent all around.
The dining area is somewhat elegant, but the atmosphere is fairly relaxed. The food was very good, but the service was lax and inexplicably slow. I was unhappy with the fact that their pre fixe (da favola)isn't really a pre fixe. The waitress expalined that there were "supplemental costs", but I had the fish of the day, and it only said market price on the menu. When I queried the waitress about the addtional $18 charge, she answered me very coldly and her tone was on the verge of rudeness. Overall, me and my companion enjoyed our dinner, but I felt insulted by the aforementioned exchange and may hestiate to make a return visit.
We had 5:30 reservations and had to leave by 7:00pm to go to the concert. Service declined as restaurant became more busy -- even though we reminded our waitress several times we needed to leave by 7:00pm. Food was good but unnfortunately we ran out of time for dessert. Coffee was cold and we needed to ask for new cups, which were then only half consumed since we were now running late.
We couldn't say enough about the food, it was amazing!! On another note the staff, while attentive was below the standard of what a restaurant of that caliber should employ. I was really disappointed when our waitress greeted us and didn't have anything informative to say. She told us of the specials of the day, but failed to tell us how is was prepared or served. She did not offer any suggestions as to what wines would compliment our appitizer, main course or dessert. She basically appeared unknowlegable about the fine dining experience. After visiting a couple of other restaurants in the area recently, there was no comparison to the whole experience. While the wait staff is just the staff, they really are the ones who sell the meal
