DANS at Green Hills Ratings and Reviews
Arriving at the spacious parking lot of the farm house that houses the restaurant was a a wonderful start after driving in a drizzling rain to get there. We were started in the large, welcoming, dining room with an old wood burning fireplace. Unfortunately not cold enough to have a fire. The tables were nicely spaced for privacy, all with good views of the fireplace.
The escargot appetizer had a rich moderately garlic flavor with a bitter accent that accentuated the garlic and the grated Parmesan on top. The special mushroom ravioli with a braised beef sauce was rich and flavorful while light enough to please but not not heavy enough to interfere with the entrées.
I had the Wolffish with pistachio coating that was moist and appropriately mild in flavor. It was served over a roasted vegetable medley that was slightly sweet and had a toothsome texture that enhanced the fish. I was grateful that no starch component was served. My wife’s chicken with a subtle herbal sauce was excellent, moist, firm and flavorful.
Our Sauvignon blanc provided a palatal refreshing pause between bites.
The apple bread pudding dessert was rich flavored and fruit flavored with moderate sweetness. Made as a loaf and served as a slice left me wanting a crisp top for textural contrast.
The only less than stellar part of the evening was the service was not up to the standards of the setting or the food. The hostess seemed unable to put the menus she had picked up to help my wife off with her coat and hang it on the coat rack behind her stand. Our waitress was excellent at bringing the food and removing plates but seemed concerned with fast service, not the celebratory meal we desired. I had to ask for bread and then ask separately for butter. Small complaints tha were annoying and did not ruin the wonderful dining experience.
The service and the food was great! My wife enjoyed the rack of lamb and I had the sea bass which was made perfectly. We sat outside and it was quiet and very relaxing. We were able to enjoy our conversation without trying to speak over any background noise.
Our second visit to Dan's this summer, this time for a milestone anniversary. We were there in June for my birthday. Great meal in the garden on a perfect evening. The special salad with heirloom tomatoes was spectacular and the diver scallops nearly as good. My wife had the watermelon salad and crab cakes which were both excellent. Very good service as well.
This is at least our 4th visit to DoGH. Each time in the past we have been impressed, and made the 45 minute drive to get here. This last visit however, didn't meet expectations for the first time. Service was excellent. I ordered the evening's special salad, watermelon and grilled pineapple. That was quite good. The scallop main dish was not. My issues:
We each ordered the diver scallops which were done nicely, but the lobster advertised on the $38 entree amounted to 2 over-broiled squares the size of a sugar cube, each. Not nice. 'over potato hash' might have been nice but was simply spiced french fries. I think they were running out of things on a Sunday night? Just admit that, and give me a reduced price; it's hard for any restaurant to anticipate demand and use fresh ingredients.
The bottle of wine I ordered off the wine list was not what I received at the table.
Always good in the past. I will give them another try.
Dan's is a fabulous restaurant! They have a beautiful outdoor patio with gorgeous pavers and wonderful landscaping. The last three times we ate there, we were outside. It is a relaxing and wonderful place to have a gourmet meal. The menu is fabulous and the drinks are great! Bon appetit!
Outstanding meal on a Monday night.
A close "foodie" friend was visiting and we decided to go out. Monday's are a challenge to find a good restaurant here. Overjoyed that Dan's was open, we reserved a table. Our window side table was prepared for three. The restaurant was about half full and had the hushed restaurant noise level and a low classical—jazz background music playing. The tables are well spaced giving the luxurious feeling I enjoy. The service was professional, attentive, and prompt. A little lovely hummus bell pepper amusè bouche started the meal. Their excellent wine list with a broad price level allowed us to choose an appropriate wine. The garlic rich escargot dish had tender snails and a licorice hint. My sea bass on an edamame vegetable medley was a superb palatally balanced dish. The duck dish had medium rare breasts with fat rendered and a somewhat crispy skin. Nan's Pa cchicken was moist breast, crackling crisp skin with an intensely flavored sauce. We split the gorgeous cherry special dessert. Every course was a rounded full taste treat.
My wife and I were seated in the garden after the hostess tried to talk us into inside seating by describing the perfect evening as "hot". I had requested outside seating with my Open Table reservation. I think they just had more requests for outside than they had tables. That was just a minor annoyance.
We started off with a cocktail as the wines by the glass are somewhat limited, at least for chardonnay which we prefer. There was a very good selection of bottles, but with the 20 minute drive home, we did not want to drink that much. We started with a Caeser salad for my wife and the Sweet Potato soup for me. The soup was excellent with cinnamon, apples and cream. Our entrees were the rack of lamb and the duck and both were spectacular. We finished up by sharing the featured cherry dessert as it was my birthday. The dessert was quite good, although a few of the cherries had not been pitted.
We would certainly return on another special occasion as it is a bit pricey for just a normal dinner out.
We were asked if we wanted to sit on the outdoor patio and we were delighted. Beautiful atmosphere with grass and landscaping around our table. The wait staff was knowledgeable and gave us great advice.
Asparagus salad, preceded a well roasted rack of lamb. Scallops were also enjoyed. Wine list is small but had many well priced bottles.
The service was a little slow because of the restaurant being very busy for Mothers Day dinner. Overall our servers were excellent. The meal experience took about two hours, but that seems appropriate for fine dining.
This is not the place to bring very young children.
Always consistent and delicious...we have never had a bad meal!! The Staff goes above and beyond, and if you can sit on the patio, it will enhance your experience. It's beautiful! They make Special Occasions personalized by added a candle to a dessert as a surprise, or other little touches, that make it all a special experience. We're recent Vegetarians and was recommended the Eggplant Steak which was delicious! I have no doubt that they would customize a meal based on dietary or food preferences, and it would be absolutely delicious!
Dan's is our go to spot when we want a great meal with wonderful ambiance. The owners are very attentive and personable. The wait staff is professional. The food is fresh and creative. Their sweet potato soup is a MUST every time I go. They have done a wonderful job updating their bar but our favorite is dining outside on their beautiful patio. Can't wait until it opens!! We drive 40 minutes to dine here and don't ever think twice about it! !
