Outstanding service, the sign of a top restaurant. Fun ending- we were given a "menu" that listed all the dishes we ordered and a small boxed canele upon departure.

Perfect dining experience - Food, wine, service, pace. All perfect. If there were anything I would like to change it would be the sofa-type seating along the wall. Just not a fan as I prefer a regular chair. That being said, we had a wonderfully romantic corner seating, which was great. Loved it and will definitely be returning!!

The restaurant is gorgeous but a tiny bit tired. The real problem was the Waygu beef. The carrot and onion sides were cold and the beef overdone. Very disappointing and surprising. Other courses were delicious but this was a big mistake at these prices and level of dining.

Always enjoy any visit to Daniel. The attention to detail is outstanding. We also very much enjoyed the wines suggested to pair with our meal.

Daniel had been a restaurant I always wanted to try but never was able to make it happen until recently. When I first secured a 6:00 pm reservation I was slightly concerned as we were dining as a family with my wife and twin 12 year old daughters. My kids are very adventurous eaters and can hold their own in any restaurant, however, restaurants of Daniel's caliber are not always as enthusiastic when they see children. My concerns were soon put to rest as at every touch point in the restaurant our entire family was treated with grace and professionalism. We all ended up ordering the four course prix fixe menu. From the amuse bouche to the mini warm madeleines at the end and every course in between our experience was top notch. My wife and I also opted for the the wine pairings with each course only adding to our dining nirvana. When the last course was cleared and we were each handed a copy of the menu of the meal we just experienced. Thinking our night had come to a close we were pleasantly surprised one last time. The Assistant General Manager asked if we would like a tour of the kitchen and meet the Executive Chef. We were escorted through the dining room and had the opportunity to "look behind the curtain" and see first hand how a high end kitchen operates. Chef was gracious enough to put his expediting duties on hold and invite us all behind the line and have a group picture taken. As we left Daniel I could not help but think this could be one those dining experiences that may never happen again but I am so glad we able to share it as a family. Bravo Daniel!

Haven't dined at Daniel in a while, mainly because reservations can be difficult. In fact, I booked a table at the lounge since that's what was available. We had an amazing evening! The lounge is a lovely and a bit more intimate Daniel experience. We opted for the four course tasting menu, although ala carte is also possible in the lounge, and we did the wine pairing. Each course was more wonderful than the next and we added a cheese course before dessert. It was paired beautifully with a fortified French wine. All I can say is, we will be returning as soon as we can. Highly recommend!

I rank this restaurant 3.85 out of 5 great service memorable experience but for me I was limited to a few dishes because of my allergies to fish. And most disappointing was the creme brûlée the pistachio filling was overwhelming.

My husband and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary and the upcoming new baby. Daniel Lounge did not miss a beat and took great care of us the entire time. I let them know at the beginning of the meal that I was early in my pregnancy; they gave us a small gift of a baby bib at the end of our meal. We ate the 4 course pre-fix menu and got a few small treats along the way.

I would highly recommend Daniel Restaurant!

I didn't realize the restaurant was so quiet and lovely. I did expect the food to be wonderful and it was. The service was attentive and unobtrusive. Each time we neared the end of our butter, it was whisked away and a fresh butter plate arrived. The fois gras was sublime, the langoustine appetizer a delicious medley of flavors. The staff noted that it was my birthday and made an effort to make it special. All in all a wonderful memory. Will definitely go back again.

Somehow we had managed to miss out on Daniel on all our many previous visits to NYC, so we decided to fix this oversight on our latest visit. We decided to try out the 'lounge seating' area as this offered flexibility to move away from fixed-course dining which we usually try to avoid. They had a nice corner table for us, as requested, and offered us the la carte choice while we enjoyed a glass of wine as an aperitif.

Unfortunately, there was a wedding party in the function room and the door to the lounge kept opening to allow people in and out. Our server apologised for the disruption and offered to sit us elsewhere in the bar area or possibly in the main dining room. Eventually, we decided a move to the dining room was the best option if we were going to have any chance of enjoying the evening. So off we went to the best of both worlds - a la carte dining choice in the heart of the restaurant.

Sadly, the rest of the experience was a little disappointing, particularly the service. Our new primary server was really not to our liking - too loud and brash with no thought of trying to make our experience special. One appetizer was excellent (langoustine), the other an unbalanced lobster salad rather overwhelmed with fennel and the main course of sturgeon was very good. Some of the breads were good (brioche) others, just so so.

I guess, overall, it just wasn't what we had anticipated. For such a formal restaurant held in such high esteem, we expected service levels of the kind you experience at, say, the Waterside Inn in the UK, because excellence in service is essential if you want to fully enjoy your food . . . and allows you to overlook any small shortcomings. Surprisingly, on the food front, I would say that Gabriel Kreuther delivered better when we visited the day before, and provided much better value for money. Sorry to have reached that conclusion, Daniel!

This is a restaurant for people with a huge expense account or wallet and out to impress a client or someone. I had dinner here with a friend and our bill came to just over a grand, all in. They have in impressive wine list especially Burgundies and priced just as much. The food is very good and probably the best duck breast I have ever had, even better than the best Peking duck I've had in Beijing. However, I wouldn't go back to this restaurant, not because I didn't enjoy myself, but being a world traveler, I know many more restaurants that serve just as good food for a tenth of the cost. Just like wine, one can search the world for no-name wineries that produce the same outstanding quality at a fraction. You just have to look for them. Furthermore, I like going to restaurants where the crowd is down-to-earth. This one was just a bit too stuffy for me. The staff were down-to-earth though. Just not my cup of tea.

The staff seemed really overwhelmed by our section, there were 6 waitpeople for 8 tables and they gave us the wine for the appetizer AFTER our appetizer. The food was great but the head waiter in our section made it clear he wanted nothing to do with us schmoozing with the other couples and showing me to the service bathroom. Try another fancy restaurant in NYC, there are many that have actually managed to retain all of their michelin stars.

I don't understand why we were not allowed to sit main dining room. We sat a table which was just next to the bar. I reserved a month before we visited and told them it was our wedding ceremony dinner. I would like them to explain the reason.

The lounge is small, though the private room entry is right there and lots of people were going back and forth, which is bothersome, but the food and presentation were so outstanding and helped overcome any other issues. The point of the lounge is you can order a la carte, not that we did, and we got a reservation 2 hrs. before for the same food served in the restaurant. I even took some pictures!! We licked every dish clean.

Daniel has a reputation as one of the best restaurants in NYC. We had an anniversary dinner there on a Saturday evening before going to the opera. It was a $500 dinner without a bottle of wine (a glass of wine and a cocktail).
For this review, these are the things that make a restaurant truly great: artistic vision, skilled preparation, quality ingredients, great service and ambiance.
Artistic vision - great! Intriguing combinations of ingredients, harmonious results
Skilled preparation - great! Beautiful presentation, everything cooked right
Great service and ambiance - Good but not great - The service was a bit too omnipresent, and my seat was a sort of bench that was too low for the table. The servers spoke with an impressive array of accents, but in the end I understood maybe 1/4 of what they said about the food, and my wife less than that. We tired of asking them to repeat themselves so we just nodded and smiled a lot and took what we got. I would have understood less except that I had studied the menu in detail.
Quality ingredients - NOT exactly. We live on the New England coast, where we are spoiled by very fresh seafood at home and at restaurants.
-> My wife's lobster salad course tasted like supermarket lobster. Lobster from seawater has a brilliant and very perishable flavor, too which we are accustomed but we know it's hard to get. OTOH a place that serves a $500 dinner should provide fresh lobster of the finest quality.
-> The Dover Sole also lacked the fresh-from-the-sea sparkle that we get with grey sole and lemon sole from our local fishmonger, and that we enjoyed in Dover Sole served fresh in Ireland.
-> The black truffle that accompanied the sole and my wagyu beef had not the pungency that you get from truly fresh truffles. I know they're available because two days later I had black truffle with salmon at Jean-Georges and the truffles were perfect.
--> The Sauce Perigueux with the sole was thin and weak, not like the Escoffier recipe.

Loud and bustling, the lounge is the bar just outside the main seating area. It is basically a bar and there may be a crowd of people in suits standing immediately behind your chair for the duration of your meal. The chairs and tables are low to the ground, and the tables are constructed to make sitting for a long time uncomfortable--their pedestal bases leave little leg room. The food is excellent of course, but I would avoid the lounge seating.
