D'Angelo's Ristorante Italiano Ratings and Reviews
I was celebrating my birthday and wanted to try a place I've haven't been. It was my birthday a Saturday night, and maybe it was just too busy OR a lot going b/c our waiter was just all over the place and wasn't much of a help to us. But what was really bothering and sad, was the older gentleman that I believe to own the restaurant went to everyone table and was interacting with the customers but NOT once did he come to our table, so that was a little bitter sweet. So yes I would recommend, to allow everyone to receive there own experience... maybe one day I'll give it a try again!
I've eaten here several times and the food is always delicious. Had only ok service this most recent visit. Made a reservation for 5 people at 6:30pm, and when we arrived the restaurant we fairly empty. Despite making a reservation, it took about 20 minutes for the hostess to seat our party (5 people) and several groups who walked in without reservations were seated before us. The server also stopped checking back with our table after we received our food and so there was a long delay in asking for and receiving our check. We may have caught them at an off time or low staffing night, but it seemed like our table was forgotten.
The food was good but for the price should have been better. For $18, I expected to get more than 4 ravioli and the Cannelloni meal was overly salted. We also felt very rushed, maybe it was because it was restaurant week. Wished we had sat outside because it seemed like that had a bit better atmosphere for at least people watching and much less rushed.
Honestly the food is hit or miss. The caprese salad special appetizer was tomato, mozzarella and sad lettuce on a plate. I could've made better. But the pastas were excellent! Great flavors and combinations. Then again, dessert was disappointing. Clearly either not freshly made or frozen (cheesecake and tiramisu). I think if you order wisely you'll have a good experience.
Great menu with a variety of traditional offerings and outstanding veal presentations. Wine list included traditional Italian standards and several generally not available in Philadelphia restaurants. The Calamari was great. Sal stopped by every table and made every diner feel as part of the family.
Horrible service. Our reservation was for 7:15 and we weren't seated until 7:45. No server came over to even offer a drink for 15 minutes. Waitress was very rude from the beginning of the night. Took over an hour for our Main courses to be served and one dish they forgot to make and came out 8 minutes after everyone else's. When the bill came the total included gratuity. So we divided the check by the amount of people in our group. The waitress did that but then in the tip section, she wrote in her own additional gratuity!! Unheard of! She was rude when we questioned what she did and dismissed us I. The middle of the conversation because she had to serve food to her other tables. She's lucky gratuity was included, otherwise she wouldn't have received as generous a tip. We've been going to D'angelos for many years and it keeps declining in quality and service. This visit and our last visit were absolutely horrible. All 8 of us will not be returning again. Go somewhere else in the neighborhood.
We have a group of close friends who come together for the Penn Relays every year now for over 30 years. We always come to De Angelo's on the same corresponding Friday evening each year.
The owner ( playing guitar )is a great guy , the bartender is an icon himself, the service is always top notch, the food is always superb. There is nothing not to like about this great little escape.
Food was very good. The waiter was another story . We got the right meals and service was okay but he seemed to dislike us from the start. He was unfriendly and a bit rude and basically put a real damper on our experience . Maybe he was having a bad day. Too bad it was the day we were there!
Loud, crass, classless. Food was from the 1950's - mediocre; Chianti was bad but expensive, service was inattentive; the room looked like a place where old men gather to play poker; lighting was awful. To paraphrase Rick's line from Casablanca ... "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, we walked into this one." Never again.
Sat a t the bar and became great friends with Gus in no time.....made great drinks and good conversation. Sal let us pick our own table since we were early and opted for a nice romantic table on the 2nd floor. Appetizers and main meals we incredible and is definitely a place where we will go back.
