Dakshin Indian Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
We wanted to try some Indian food, but were not sure what to order. We both like the spices and smell of the food, but were not familiar with ordering. We enjoy it on buffets when traveling, but were not comfortable with Indian terminology. The wait staff was most helpful, they encouraged us to try a few things that they enjoy (spicy hot chutney) and it was great. The food was high quality, well prepared and certainly worthy of a return trip. If you like authentic Indian food, this is definitely the place. Close to Disney Springs near Gooding's Grocery Store.
It was rather deserted. It was a Saturday evening at 8pm. We were one party of 3 out of 3 parties in the restaurant at the time. It started quite well, the server provided us some good insights into the menu and the portion sizes. The food arrived in an appropriate amount of time and the portion sizes were good. The taste of the dishes were not very extraordinary. Simply ordinary really. The server asked two of our party if they would like more iced tea. Upon affirmation, she then asked them to hold on to their straws while she took the glasses away to get them refilled. Then another server came back with a small pitcher of iced tea, but now we had no glasses. Hold on to the straws?? Never had that happen.
At the end, the check arrived. It already contained a 15% tip. The server did not tell us this, and it was buried beneath the tax line. In a tourist area like Orlando, it is normal for their to be taxes and sometimes tourism tax, but it was odd to see in a restaurant like this the tip already there, but NOT be told about it. Our server then proceeded to tell us that she does not get any of the tip and the owner keeps it all, so we should keep that in mind.
All quite odd.
We will not be returning.
I would have liked it a bit spicier. I ordered a chicken tikka massala and it was pretty mild. I am used to this dish being medium but then I've had a number of curries all over the world. This is probably designed for the American and tourist palate.
I still thought it was very flavorful though. Next time I will get a spicier dish.
We struggled with Disney/Orlando traffic, calling the restaurant to let them know we would be late. When we arrived, the staff were gracious and polite! The food was very tasty and the service very nice, too. We were 4 persons and we ordered 2 chicken dishes, 1 fish dish and a veggie option. All were enjoyable. The waiter was helpful and gave suggestions, most of which we took. I wish the location were easier to navigate; they are away from the busy street, which is nice, but getting through the intersection and into the location is difficult when traffice is heavy. I would suggest leaving a bit extra time for travel. All in all, we enjoyed the evening very much despite the traffic challenges and would highly recommend!
For a starter we went with the Onion Bhajia which was very good.
For my entree I chose the Malabar Lamb Biryani. The only negative thing that I have to say about this dish is that I question whether the meat was truly lamb or mutton. If it was lamb it was perhaps over cooked a bit. The spice level was absolutely perfect.
My wife ordered the Tikhut Kombdichi Curry. It was not bad but it was not fantastic either. She had asked for spicy but it was rather thin and unimpressive. The chicken and accompanying basmati rice were good yet unimpressive.
Together with our meal we shared the Garlic Calicut Porota which was very tasty and went well with our entrees.
We would recommend Dakshin for visitors of Orlando.
