About Dakota Restaurant
Open since October of 1990, The Dakota has been a pioneer in the culinary industry on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Their cuisine is influenced by the flavorful Creole cuisine, with Contemporary Louisiana. Other influences include the Southwest, California, and Asia using fresh local and seasonal ingredients. The carefully selected wines pay tribute to the well crafted wines of California and Oregon while offering a few of the traditional styles of Europe and Australia. Rich mahogany millwork and earth tone colors set the stage for a comfortably elegant dining experience. My husband and I went here on Valentine's Day. It was quiet, the service was fantastic, and the food was delicious. There was a special menu for Valentine's Day. We started with the lobster blt appetizer. It was very yummy. The portion size was quite small (I prefer more share-able appetizers), but it was a nice tasting before our meal. My husband didn't love the fish but he is a very picky eater. His dish seemed to have a very small portion. I had a filet Mignon and it was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked and very flavorful with delicious gravy and mashed potatoes with leeks. It was a perfect amount of food that is filling but won't leave you needing to be carried out of the restaurant. I also had asparagus added to my meal and I wouldn't recommend it... it seemed canned and not fresh. It was the only part of my meal that wasn't perfect. Lastly, we had the white chocolate brownie for dessert. We ate EVERY BIT of this thing. It was soooo delicious and filled with rich dark chocolate. Overall we had a great night here and will likely return for another date night.
We went to Dakota for Valentine's Day. They had a special menu but the number of choices and variety of food was more than adequate. We both had the crab and brie soup (a Dakota classic) and for an entrée, I had the lamb chops while my wife had the veal. Both were delicious. While Dakota is one of the more established fine dining restaurants on the North Shore, it is still one of the best.
I'd say that the food and the service had taken me by surprise. I'd never heard of this restaurant, but it was worth the visit. Great environment, amazing music, good food, just an amazing place to visit. Other places have the"name" but The Dakota is truly a dining experience that I'll revisit each time I'm in the area.
Each meal here is more delicious than the last. Apps are fresh, delicious and creative, soups and salads fantastic, and I’ve really come to love whatever steaks they’re serving on their frequently-changing menu that smartly keeps the fantastic classics the restaurant is known for. Their by the glass wine list is also noticeably above average (even for restaurants at this level) and allows you to change up your wine choices to match your meal without sacrificing wine quality like you sometimes have to do when buying wine by the glass.

The Crab Brie soup never disappoints and should not be missed by a newcomer to Dakota’s! The filet has always been very good and the mixed grill was excellent!
We were not able to get there on Thanksgiving Day, but we went the evening after and it was fabulous! No turkey on the menu, however, the chefs were willing to create something for us with pulled turkey if we desired. We opted to go with the special and menu items, and everything we had was perfectly delicious! We chose Dakota's because we get great service of excellent food in an elegant relaxing atmosphere where we can share quiet conversation and listen to beautiful background music. Loved the whole experience!!
The Dakota is a very worthwhile experience. We were visitors from about 2 hours away and had seen very good reviews. Decided to go for my wife's birthday and were not disappointed. The brie and crab soup is the best I have ever tasted. The salads (the "Bleu" and the "Beet and Squash") were outstanding. The entrees (gulf fish with crabmeat and the stuffed soft shell crab) were first rate. My only disappointment was that I did not have room for more.
We are foodies. Arrived as they opened. Service throughout was excellent. Lamb nacho appetizer was soggy and over-seasoned. The seared ahi tuna salad was covered in an overly-sweet dressing that ruined the preparation. Seafood mixed grille entree was excellent. Coconut cake was very dense and not pleasant. Flourless chocolate dessert was likewise overly dense and firm, although it had a good taste. Upon reviewing and approving charges, an extra $71 was inexplicably charged to my credit card, but they did correct it , upon my catching it! What was one of our favorite New Orleans area restaurants is now one to which we will not return. Sad.
