About Dakota

Entering its third decade, the Dakota has long been a favorite of jazz legends as well as patrons who savor the best of both art forms, the virtuosity of kitchen and bandstand. It was a terrible experience the hostess was rude and didn’t explain that we were not going to be seeing the show and we were literally seated in a storage area where they were piling chairs while we ate. The waiter literally tossed my wife’s plate on the table. We shocked and left as quickly as we could.

We especially appreciated very prompt service as we were attending a concert. Each of us was happy with our meal.

Had friends in from out of town and wanted a restaurant that combined good food with entertainment. Chose the Dakota. Food was excellent, not the same boring supper club choices, and entertainment was the best. Server helpful, drinks were great, just could not say enough good about our evening.

The music was great. But the food left a lot to be desired. We ordered 4 different entrees, and only liked the hamburger and fries. And even then, we ordered mushrooms with our hamburger at an additional cost and received two! We each paid twenty dollar cover charge, and two of us had obstructed view of the pianist.

I may be back for the music, but not for the food.

The food was just ok - nothing special. The service was beyond bad. We waited over 20 minutes to order a bottle of wine, another 20 minutes for it to arrive. Our food actually came out before the wine did. The salt and pepper we asked for never came and we finally got it from another waiter. Our wait assistant was the saving grace, shimming the table, checking on water, delivering the wine (finally) and finding the waitress twice. For us, Connie Evingson and Sam Miltich were the draw and they did not disappoint. I'd come back again to hear them in spite of the bad service.

Excellent wait staff/service: attentive, knowledgeable, friendly
Good food: nice variety, our brussel sprouts and risotto, altho' tasty, were undercooked
Music: live, entertaining
Manager: rude

We hadn't been to Dakota for a while and thought we'd have dinner there before a Symphony Hall event. When we arrived, we were unaware that a Django Festival was occurring; we were seated in a separate room from the music which we had all to ourselves ; ) We enjoyed cocktails, an appetizer, entrees and a bottle of wine with the help of our very attentive wait staff. We could even enjoy the live music coming from the main room on the other side of the wall. So far, a delightful and romantic evening ...
When it was time for us to gather to leave, we stood up by the doorway to the main room to get our waitress' attention. A very rude, abrupt man stepped in front of us and essentially demanded, 'I told you you were a la carte. You didn't pay for the music. Return to your seats!' We didn't know who he was nor had we seen or spoken with him during our meal. Upon our prompting, he identified himself as the manager. When we tried to explain that we were waiting for our coffees and bill, he continued to try to belittle us as if we were lying and trying to sneak in some free music. Fortunately our waitress appeared with our cappuccinos and nearly $200 bill. As we returned to our seats to enjoy our coffees and pay our bill, he stood at the doorway and simply glared at us ~ we felt as if we were being guarded in a prison.
We will likely return to the Dakota in the future, but it will be awhile. If only the manager had been more observant as to what was occurring and had customer service as a priority, then everyone's evening would have been more delightful and we would gladly rate the Dakota higher.
BTW, our evening at Symphony Hall was stupendous - such great talent our cities have: world-renowned symphony and Dessa and her outstanding band!

The show was outstanding. I had the Trout from the menu and that dish had unique flavours which I had not experienced before and that I really enjoyed. I chose the pot beans as a side, which were delicious, however did not accompany the trout well, so should have chosen a different side. Service was excellent and the waitress was very considerate of the ongoing show. I had a lovely evening overall.

This was my first time at the Dakota, and I was very impressed. Everything seemed excellent--the service, the food, the music. I wish I'd made a point to travel to the Twin Cities sooner to enjoy this gem. Now that I have, I'll definitely return. Our time at the Dakota was a wonderful way to relax after taking in the Twins game.

The tamale masa was very dry and was not in good balance to the amount of meat filling. The black bean flavor was ok but the beans were undercooked and cool. The chilpolte sauce was the best. Very disappointing since this was the evening special.

Sad to say we won't be repeating! If you like music yes! If you like food and enjoy food then this would not be the place! One little table spoon of steak tartar shouldn't cost $17 - in Paris you'd get half a pound with fries and a salad! LOL Don't do the gumbo either! So very disappointing

Overall, this was exactly what I'd imagined and hoped for with celebrating my birthday. The music was great, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. However, on our way out, we were unsure of the payment method, and were led to believe we paid at the front. My friends and I decided to leave a tip on the table, and pay separately at the front. When the server noticed we didn't put a tip on our credit card slips, he confronted us about it. We explained we'd left it on the table, and he was pleased, but it left us with an unsettled feeling, and almost wishing we hadn't. Despite the enjoyment of the night overall, ending on this made us question if it's a place we would want to return to.

I made a reservation for a friend and I to meet for dinner during a recent conference in Minneapolis. I made the reservation fro 630 pm; when we arrived, we were asked how long we were going to stay (live music started at 8 pm and there was a cover charge if so). I didn't think we would be there that long as we had a long day and the next would be the same.
The food was okay...nothing to write home about as they say. Waiter was very nice; around 730 pm, one of the older "hostesses" came by our table (place was still pretty much empty) and asked if we were leaving soon as they could use the table for an entertainment guest.....
We skipped dessert and coffee, etc., paid our check, and headed out...needless to say quite dismayed at their unwelcoming attitude.
Skip this place; there are so many better places...try Monello's!!! Great food, ambience, and staff.

Fun night out with visiting family. We've never been to the smaller venue, so I was a little letdown when I saw half the room closed off. But, still great food, drinks, dessert, and entertainment. Enjoyed Travis Anderson Trio! Great service, too!

We had an excellent table overlooking the jass group. The service was very timely, no rushing between servings. Our server was always available but not pushy. The food and presentation were outstanding. The dining highlights were the mussels and the salad with the house dressing.

We went on a Monday nite. Reservation form stated that we could not reserve a table in the room with Jazz band online. Great with us- we went for conversation and food and planned to enjoy the music as light background. But when we arrived, we were seated on the Jazz Club area b/c of short staff on a slow nite. Totally made sense, but defeated our plans to catch up with our friends. Abnormal complaint! We did enjoy the band however! Food wonderful. Good service. We will return!

We did not stay for music, we had an early dinner before the symphony. The food was well prepared in that it was hot and what we ordered and the service was very good. The meal was expensive what we received and to my dismay, the lobster risotto was not as flavorful as I would expect, although the two scallops were tasty. My partner had the halibut with black eyed peas and carrots. The peas were under cooked and the green garlic sauce was over powering. The chef included an apricot smear which didn't' complement the dish. The halibut was very good though. The mussels we had for an appetizer were well prepared, but average flavor. We had two items off the plates menu and one entree, two non alcoholic drinks and a large basket of bread (thank goodness because we ate it to fill us up since dinner was a bit light) for $100. A bowl of mussels, two scallops, average tasting risotto, a 5 oz piece of halibut, under cooked peas, two carrots, 8 slices of bread and two glasses of flavored soda water for $100. Go for the late night menu and music, skip the dinner menu.

Good food, good jazz, no complaints. They made nice cocktails (a dakota old fashioned and a 'french martini') and both of our by-the-glass wine options were delicious. Generous food portions. Having moved to Mpls. from NY and Philly before that, we thought our first show at Dakota was a great value---the music would have been double the price per person on top of more expensive food on the East Coast. Excellent date night!

We always enjoy the Dakota. The music, in this case Nachito, was fantastic. And the food has improved greatly over the years and is now very good. Our problem with this experience was the add on's and up charges for premium liquor, a blue cheese olive, bread, and an appetizer. The pita appetizer was @$14 and was one tiny morsel shared among the 4 of us. I requested bread which was brought with the drinks at @$5, but then another "free" basket was brought with the salads. We had enough bread for an army. We should have been told that bread comes with the salads or entree. Then the drink up charges were much higher then we remember from previous visits, including $2.50 or so for a blue cheese olive. Bottom line was a bill $50 too high for what we are used to getting and paying. Otherwise, all was great and we had a fine time with good friends.

We were in town for a wedding and a friend recommended we go to the Dakota Jazz Club. It sounded like a fun idea, so we did. Honestly, the food was much more than I expected -- it was very good -- and be sure to try to Mussels if they are on the menu as they are outstanding! We saw a local band whose members were accomplished musicians. If you like an Old Fashioned, try the Mr. Smooth cocktail - I had two in addition to wine with dinner! The reason for the 3 stars regarding "Ambiance" is that the tables are close together. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful.

This was our first time here and found that the food main courses for brunch were overpriced. My grown son had gotten the ribeye and did not care for it so spent $40 on something he only took a few bites of. The overall experience was good with the music, etc. I was expecting it to be crowded. I think that with as much space as what was available, our seating could have been in a better location.
