Daily Grill - San Francisco

So here's the thing: the front desk staff was/is a mess. I have eaten there many times and never had issues. This time we arrived a few minutes early for our 5pm reservation and between the three ladies at the front, no one seemed to be familiar with either the computer reservation system or the basic concept of greeting guests. One muttered to the other, one asked us to sit and wait, another picked up the phone. One finally assured us there were tables available and we would be seated --- but there seemed to be confusion about if/where/when. A minute later another party walked in, was greeted with hugs and promptly led to a table while we sat. After some more wandering back and forth by the hosts, we were led to a table around the back of the restaurant ... where there were dozens of empty tables. Have NO idea what all that confusion was about - perhaps they were short on waiters? Once we were sat, our waiter (Emmett I believe?) was a solid PRO. Food was good - excellent steak salad, excellent butternut soup, very good cocktails. Summary: good spot near the theatres, menu fine, meat good, service good, you just have to survive the front desk...
The service here is really really bad.
Good restaurant if you are going to the theater. Hamburger was delicious.
The chicken pot pie was amazing!! Full of chunks of chicken paired with a light flakey crust. Yum!! The butternut squash soup was savory and creamy. Excellent meal and service.
If near the bar it can be noisy. Service was good but food so so! Trout good but asparagus tough and sweet potato fries were cold. Ketchup looked like it had been sitting around since lunch...it was crusty.
A great "clubby" feel. Our go-to lunch and/or dinner restaurant before or after a show. Always ask for Penny's station. She is an outstanding server and really adds to the overall experience.
I have been to this restaurant several times over the years. The food quality and the service is declining . This was the WORST service ever! The waiter mixed up all three meals , had to ask for everything, bread, drinks, check ...Food was just ok , seems to be declining . Then we got charged a 2.45 fee which I guess covers SF healthcare . Some restaurants charge it some don’t .
WHEN WE WERE SEATED, IT TOOK ALMOST 20 MINS FOR SOMEONE TO COME TO THE TABLE AND EVEN TAKE A DRINK ORDER OR ACKNOWLEDGE US. THEN WE WAITED ANOTHER 15 MINS FOR OUR DRINKS ONCE THE ORDER WAS FINALLY TAKEN. THEY MESSED UP OUR ORDER...SO WE WAITED AGAIN FOR THEM TO FIX THAT ISSUE. THE FOOD WASN'T ANYTHING YOU COULDN'T GET AT A SCHOOL CAFETERIA. IT WAS VERY BORING AND NOT WORTH THE COST OF IT AT ALL! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GOING THERE.
They were quite busy, but our server was still really good and attentive. Food did take a really long time to come out, though. I ordered the braised boneless short ribs with horseradish mashed potatoes. The braised short rib meat looked like it was maybe a quarter of the meat from a short rib. There were literally 2 bites. All other entrees were a nice size, so I think the chef may have made a mistake? Also the mashed potatoes were just regular mashed potatoes and not horseradish mashed potatoes, which I was looking forward to. Disappointed in the dish.
Very nice place for Thanksgiving. The deserts could have been better! Staff & service were great.
Great restaurant to go to after a play at the Curren. Close and good food!
Soup arrived before salt, pepper or water.
Coke was flat and had to be returned.
Ordered burger medium. It came well done with cold cardboard fries. Not what I expected for a $20 burger. Finally 18% tip added to our bill for us.
Looked good, under delivered. Very disappointing
Fine place, some dishes are great, some not.
My go to eatery near Union Square. Cocktails were spot on, dinner entrees (meat loaf & salmon) were delicious. A huge shout out to our server Nicole! She took such good care of us. We’ll be back soon!
Very pleasant experience! Great service from Nathan and excellent food and wine! We have returned each visit to San Fransisco
It is a nice relaxing place to go before or after theatre. Good food, service and easy to get to .
Fantastic food and service!
Excellent place to dine....good food good service nice ambience....highly recommend
Tempura shrimp and ahi tuna appetizers fantastic!
We’ve eaten here before but will not be going back. Waited to be seated, extremely poor service and food was sub par.
Very convenient for pre or post theatre at the Curran (make sure you have a reservation). Friendly server, good food, unrushed... Enjoyed our meal very much.
The food was ok at best. The Reuben sandwich I ordered was chewy. The service was poor.
The food was luke warm, the butter wouldnt even melt on the potatoes, the grilled vegetables were steamed, not grilled and the creamed spinach was tastless. I didnt sent it back because we had to get to the theater . Our waiter was very busy and tried.
The food was great. And I had a carrot cake for dessert that was beyond description.
It took a bit to be seated and the hostess seemed put out. Then it took a bit to get someone to take our drink orders. The food was very good and we got a lot so that was nice because we were starving. It is very conveniently located near the Curran which was perfect.
Apple Crisp was awesome. Femmie (sp?) was fun and provided great service.
Though a bit pricey, quality food and large portions that are more than adequate. All dishes areworth a try at leastonce
We used to love the Daily Grill, unfortunately my memories were better than the visit. The pot pie is smaller, which was okay. The Rueben sandwich was poor quality corned beef and we waited 10 minutes before we even saw a waitress. Do not plan to visit again.
I have dined at Daily Grill several times. My server was Jeremy at lunch and he was excellent. Great energy and very attentive! Hope to have him as my server next time.
My 14 oz rib-eye steak seemed thin 1/4" thick and more like 8- 10 oz
Had no flavor what so ever.
The drinks from the bar (old fashion) was a good experience
The crispy naked wings and bacon cheddar chive tots appetizers were nice
We can always get a table before going to the theatre on Geary St SF (esp. if we make reservations a week before). Also it is only one short block to both ACT Theatre and the Curren Theatre.
Dinner before a show. Good food.
Overall, the food just wasn't that interesting. The blackened ahi tuna was bland. The reuben was greasy rather than juicy.
I thought this would be a new place to try before ACT, but I doubt I'll be coming back.
I’m not able to have garlic and it’s in everything
Tarter sauce I asked for was very odd like ground mustard so I passed and even questioned if they gave me the wrong thing
Waitress excellent and very accommodating
Easy access to walk to plays at shn
Sometimes I only come to San Francisco vs LA because of your Pork chop- never knew u could eat pork medium. ❤️❤️❤️
We chose the spot for its convenience to the theatre. We arrived early for our reservation and were seated promptly in a booth towards the rear; a large floor fan was circulating air. The menu has variety, but not much depth. Service was attentive but not smothering. The Caesar salad was passable but the dressing is bland and ordinary; the mixed green salad was excellent. The medium steak arrived quite red in the center, yet without any juice remaining. The cheeseburger was excellent. The wine list is quite small as is the dessert menu, but the fudge brownie pie was very good. Overall, there are more menu choices and better meals available for the (somewhat steep) price.
We have been coming here frequently for decades and have always loved the quality of the food and the menu choices. This visit was terrible. The menu has been scaled back (again!), there were no seasonal or daily specials (like the wonderful gazpacho soup or grilled artichoke of the past), the portions have been greatly reduced and the prices have been greatly increased. People are not going to come here and pay fine dining prices for a place that is basically a casual restaurant. At least we won't. The place was empty when we arrived for our usual pre-theater dinner at 6:15 (it's usually very full). By the time we left at about 7:30, it was only about 1/2 full. The small steak salad had very little meat or asparagus. The Cobb salad was also quite small. Our salads arrived but we had to flag down a waiter to ask for the pepper mill and for a steak knife to cut the steak. That's not good service.
Perfect spot for lunch before ACT matinee. Nice selection of food and great service. Thanks.
After making a reservation, we still had to wait 35 minutes. I went to the bathroom while my Father and Mother sat across from the hostess stand. As I was returning, the hostess was taking a group of four who came in minutes before. I went up to her and she said “I was calling your name and I thought you left.” At which point my Father said Noway did she call my name or he would have stood up. She needs to follow protocol as far as reservations. When we finally got seated, we waited about ten minutes for the server and then another ten for water. Once the food finally came, it was delicious and made us forget earlier issues. Portions were good sizes and ambiance was beautiful. Just need to focus more on customers coming in and other than that it was perfect!
We had a delightful pre-theater dinner at the Daily Grill--excellent food and service.
