Great waitstaff -enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Made a reservation for one and was seated at a table, which is rare and appreciated. Great value for the quality of food. Actually checked my receipt a couple of times to make sure I was reading the total right. Convenient and quick for a nicer option before a Capitals game.

We were disappointed with the food. We were expecting authentic Japanese izakaya, but instead it was more like American/Japanese fusion. I understand izakaya is bar food, which means "small plates," but the plates were too small. We ordered 8-9 plates between the two of us, and we were both still hungry. Between the 8-9 plates and a cup of sake, our bill was $115. So we definitely should not have still been hungry. Not to mention, the food was too oily and saucy. We ordered a udon noodle dish that tasted like macaroni and cheese. Most of the dishes were saucy. What I appreciate most about Japanese food is the quality of the ingredients and their simplicity. I guess our expectations were off. The food wasn't "bad" per se, just not authentic. It felt like a Japanese Applebees.

Possibly the worst restaurant in which I have ever dined. The food was coated with thicks layers of ketchup/mayonnaise type sauced that was meant to be a Japanese BBQ sauce. Underneath the food was flavorless and most likely just heated up in a microwave.

Very delicious small-plate-oriented Japanese steakhouse! It has vegetarian and pescatarian options. The banquette tables along the wall are a bit tight though.

One of my absolute favorite restaurants in D.C., but this time was particularly notable because the service was so great. Our server, Lucas, was very personable and attentive without being intrusive. Another server, Shelby, was also extremely helpful and friendly. The food was amazing as always but I was motivated to write a review this time because the service was so pleasantly memorable.

super smal portions-but the servers warn you. Good dishes but $80 for 2 adults and a 12-yr old for dinner is not condusive. At least give some more options like ramen and soup

Service is always wonderful and exciting. Great spot for date night. Must be adventurous with food, as the plate are unique and fun. Very tight sitting, so as long as you don't mind hearing the conversations next to you (and probably becoming friends with other customers over the food), this place is a definite try.

Izakaya is still one of my favorite restaurants in DC. They always provide great service, delicious well executed food, in a lively (sometimes noisy) vibrant space that begs you to not have a good time. Most people think it's going to be sushi since it's a Japanese restaurant, but the menu is always diverse with plays on traditional Japanese dishes as well as other Asian cuisines, so it's perfect for those who want to enjoy the familiar as well as different or new interpretations of classic dishes. But honestly I come time and time again for the Onigiri with pork since I can't find it anywhere else in DC and it's always perfect.

Small plates Japanese. The grilled avocado was yummy. Also the chicken wings and pork belly and brussel sprout skewers. The noodles were a little bland. Nice hand crafted cocktails. Pretty reasonable for Penn Quarter

Terrible place, the chicken wing is raw, there is basically no service. Its not like a restaurant, more like a bar. And you know bar food. Highly not recommend.

Very good Japanese fusion with interesting twists. My favorite was HOTARU-IKA and beef tongue skewers. Both full of flavor and with great texture. Would definitely go back to try some other dishes.

I do not recommend this restaurant. Portions are tiny and several of the dishes were flavorless. It’s not cheap either. There are better places to eat in the city.

Izakaya was delightful. Our server happened to be the sommelier and was extremely knowledgeable about all of the food and drinks on the menu. He was also very attentive. Food was a treat. Would recommend the chilled cucumber and the catfish. The roast pork is also super good but there just wasn't enough of it in the seaweed wrap and too much rice. Rice bowl was good but too much rice not enough other stuff. Chicken skins were not as crispy as expected, came out chewy and a bit stringy but that's a tough one to get right. Flavors were great all around.

As a huge fan of daikaya and bantam king, we were roundly disappointed by this meal. I had several conversations with the restaurant telljng them this was a business dinner of 8, but when I arrived, 8 people were smashed into the table and there was no room for me to sit. We were moved to two tables side by side, but the set up made it impossible for the two tables to talk or share the small dishes. The food was spotty, some good, some very bad. The server was pushy about upselling drinks and dishes. All-in-all, not at all what I expect from this restaurant group.

The food was outstanding! The steamed egg and custard starter (chawanmushi) was a delicious surprise, very unusual. The octopus, croquettes and the beef tongue were really really wonderful. The tuna in the tuna poke was very good, but we were not a fan of the diced yamaimo it came with (personal taste, didn't like the okra-like consistency others probably loved it). The smashed potatoes were good, but not amazing. overall a really wonderful dining experience, excellent service and a very cool ambience. Will definitely go back with friends!

It was our first time to the restaurant and we heard great reviews. We had arrived to the restaurant 30 minutes early but did not mind waiting until our reservation time at 8:45 PM. When it came time for us to be seated at 8:45 PM, our table was still occupied and we had to wait until 9:00 PM to be seated while there was a table available, but it was reserved for another party. Overall experience was good with the service and the food was good.
