Very creative tavern-style restaurant, with roots in Japan but reflecting other culinary influences. Very attentive service, especially for a very informal atmosphere. My wife and I were probably 30 years older than the next youngest person there, but everyone seemed cook with that.

It was recommended that we order 4-5 plates per person. The food came out furiously fast - seemingly in an effort to turn the table - even though we asked otherwise. They don't understand the concept of coursing the food with 4 dishes being dropped at once that didn't pair well together. The server was aloof and inattentive all around. Many of the dishes were delicious and serving sizes were spot on. It's a shame that the service was so off. Note there is zero room between tables unless you are sitting in one of the booths.

Went with friends for our second time, their first. We are all foodies with a lot of international experience, having worked and lived in Asia for much of three decades. Food was superb — fun, playful and delicious. Our Japanese friends night not find the menu sufficiently traditional, but we loved the interpretations. Especially delicious: grilled avocados, onigiri (rice balls with pork filling), chawanomushi (egg custard), among a great assortment of other wonderful dishes. Great stuff!

Second floor food is very american, I guess ramen at first floor should be good. The water to wash hands at restroom is bloody hot, be careful

Wonderful all around, with a fascinating selection of small dishes that are certainly not your typical Japanese food and great service and ambience!

First visit. Picked the restaurant because it was close to where we were meeting. Expected a typical sushi, roll, Japanese entree place and was pleasantly surprised. Best way to describe is Japanese/Hawaiian fusion “tapas”. Had squid, calamari, avocado, steak, poke and onigiri. Each was enough for 2 and all had a blend of sauces that were unusual and terrific. Restaurant is more typical of what you find in areas outside large Japanese cities (eg Tokyo).

Food portions are small. I am visiting from New York, and the price is comparable, but portion size, quality are subpar. In addition, Chicken skewers were undercooked. taste profile overall is questionable. However, Service is good. Waiter and manager were attentive and apologetic.

Some interesting flavors and the small plates are great for groups of friends. Excellent spot for a boozy get-together.

Must haves: onegiri, chawanmushi (egg custard), salmon, cacio pepe udon, cod roe spaghetti

Avoid: Zucchini skewers (undercooked), octopus (overcooked)

Izakaya offers Japanese small plates that are not quite traditional Japanese fare. Prices are just a bit high, but the service is outstanding. Servers explain how to eat each small plate as it is brought to the table, to ensure the full experience. A special favorite for my daughter and I before events at Capital One Arena.

The food was mostly good but the prices were outrageous given the serving sizes - like for example $8 or $9 for what turned out to be a bread plate with Mac and Cheese (cacio e pepe ramen). There are so many other great options in the area... I was really disappointed but to be fair my dining companion was relatively satisfied. I won’t return.

Absolutely delicious Japanese / pan Asian small plates in a lively atmosphere. Exceeded expectations in every way. Do not miss the pork belly and Brussels sprout kushi (skewer), tuna poke or enoki mushrooms with miso butter.

Arrived with Open Table reservation for two at opening (11 a.m.). Highly recommend two orders of the tuna/watermelon, avocado/grapefruit, and scallops. We would order more food for lunch but we already had chocolate lavender cake, coffee and tea at another place because we just couldn't resist starting lunch with dessert at a place 5 blocks away. Heehee. Come and enjoy this fantastic restaurant. I refer it as the Japanese Tapas place. A must go-to place when in the D.C area. Arigato Daikaya Izakaya!!

Daikaya and Izakaya are both absolutely fantastic! For Izakaya (the upstairs part which takes reservations), I love the ambiance and the food. The grilled avocado with aged ponzu sauce is definitely a highlight. I would recommend it for anything from a regular night out to a special occasion.

We were looking for guys on the Michelin list and found this. Excellent food and a knowledgeable and helpful waiter helped us find the favorites: fried garlic was sweet, hot and chewy with a little crispness; chawanmushi was a layered, delicate flavor-mine of egg, custard, shiitake and Parmesan. We loved the grilled avocado and special foie grass corn rice. The catfish and mackerel were hits, as were the beef tongue (mom used to try to get us to eat it and we would fight it. Nothing but love here) and pork and Brussels sprouts.

They have a lovely selection of saki, including some in cans that are work trying.

Great Date night place. Our waiter made the best recommendations and was very helpful! Food was outstanding. Each dish had its own unique taste and kept getting more delicious as the night went on. We finished dinner with a complimentary glass of whiskey. Only downside is the two top tables were really close together so you could hear the other couples conversations. I will definitely recommend anyone to try it!

For a restaurant that advertises that it has no ramen, it sure doesn't have any ramen! Food was good, the tables are a bit cramped but otherwise hard to complain. All in all I'd definitely go back.

If you are looking for the place to have a conversation, or small bites, this is the place for you. The food is creative and tasty. However, do not come there if you are hungry and want a good meal - the tapas are tiny - most of them are the spoon-size. (e.g. grilled okra is -two toothpicks with two pieces of okra on each.
We both love Japanese food, so we chose that place for birthday celebration.
We ordered 9 tapas for two of us ($ 80+), and although we are not big eaters, we were hungry. Most of our order were fish/ seafood tapas, so maybe meat portions are a bit larger.
Our bill with two drinks and tips was around $150, which is way too much, considering we still were hungry.
Nice decor inside, nice atmosphera, but we do not plan to come back.

Excellent Japanese/Pan-Asian small plates. This goes beyond sushi and other standard Japanese fare. Think upscale comfort food and street food. It's still Japanese, so the flavors can be delicate and subtle, so go in with an open mind and explore the options. Wide-ranging wine selection, OK draft beer options (could be improved, but a minor quibble given the quality of everything else), craft cocktails.

My date liked the Old Dominion beer they offered. They had a good non-alcoholic house ginger beer. For food I recommend the Onigiri Rice Ball (abura-miso - pork and sweet miso filling), Fried Garlic, and Tuna Poke. The service was excellent. The music was great. The bathrooms are very Japanese (except the toilets). I'll definitely be back.
