Great Date night place. Our waiter made the best recommendations and was very helpful! Food was outstanding. Each dish had its own unique taste and kept getting more delicious as the night went on. We finished dinner with a complimentary glass of whiskey. Only downside is the two top tables were really close together so you could hear the other couples conversations. I will definitely recommend anyone to try it!
The hostess could use some training in how to turn tables and communicate effectively and professionally. Sadly we won’t be returning because the food and atmosphere are great.
Everytime I come here, it’s amazing. Enough said!!
For a restaurant that advertises that it has no ramen, it sure doesn't have any ramen! Food was good, the tables are a bit cramped but otherwise hard to complain. All in all I'd definitely go back.
Oh my goodness. Everything was amazing and such great prices!
The food and service were excellent. Our server, Alejandro, asked us some quick question and basically helped us select almost everything to order. Everything he suggested was amazing. Such an excellent experience!!
Our favourite restaurant when we’re in the neighbourhood. Every dish is delicious and unique. Excellent service, casual fun ambience, great value. Some favourites: Steamed egg custard with shiitake mushrooms, grilled avocado, tuna poke, crab croquettes, spaghetti with cod roe.
If you are looking for the place to have a conversation, or small bites, this is the place for you. The food is creative and tasty. However, do not come there if you are hungry and want a good meal - the tapas are tiny - most of them are the spoon-size. (e.g. grilled okra is -two toothpicks with two pieces of okra on each.
We both love Japanese food, so we chose that place for birthday celebration.
We ordered 9 tapas for two of us ($ 80+), and although we are not big eaters, we were hungry. Most of our order were fish/ seafood tapas, so maybe meat portions are a bit larger.
Our bill with two drinks and tips was around $150, which is way too much, considering we still were hungry.
Nice decor inside, nice atmosphera, but we do not plan to come back.
Very poor quality food. Rude server. Seated us late at the table. Not impressed.
Excellent Japanese/Pan-Asian small plates. This goes beyond sushi and other standard Japanese fare. Think upscale comfort food and street food. It's still Japanese, so the flavors can be delicate and subtle, so go in with an open mind and explore the options. Wide-ranging wine selection, OK draft beer options (could be improved, but a minor quibble given the quality of everything else), craft cocktails.
Great service. Hardly any wait time for orders.
My date liked the Old Dominion beer they offered. They had a good non-alcoholic house ginger beer. For food I recommend the Onigiri Rice Ball (abura-miso - pork and sweet miso filling), Fried Garlic, and Tuna Poke. The service was excellent. The music was great. The bathrooms are very Japanese (except the toilets). I'll definitely be back.
Excellent service. Wonderful decor. Very nice presentations. Interesting place. Food was good, but I don't think Japanese food is my favorite.
Excellent as usual. The chicken wings were so delicious I’ve been dreaming about them. Oysters with barbecue sauce were yummy. Three choices for the green tea. We will. be back.
Daikaya's Iazakaya has delicious and unique options. I have Celiac Disease and I always feel confident eating form their gluten free menu.
It was fun!
Food and drinks were very sub par. Waiters couldn’t figure out which orders went to which tables, actually picked up food as we were eating saying the dishes were sent to the wrong table. Waiter recommended a bottle of wine that he said paired perfectly with the food we ordered - wasn’t good at all. So many better options in DC, I won’t be going back.
Several of the dishes that we all shared were excellent - the spaghetti, octopus, and grilled avocado were all standouts
We had a complicated allergy issue in our party and our server was beyond spectacular taking care of us, gathering information, and ensuring that we were not just safe but really happy. And the food was delicious. Can't wait to come back!
Great food and enjoyed the service. Our waiter is half Japanese and helped choose our food while explaining some neat cultural info. No regrets at all.
Excellent food. Everything but the tuna poke was fantastic. Their prices were definitely high, but not obscenely so. My biggest negative was the waiter, who was very well informed about the menu and not at all malicious, but still came off a little too controlling and pedantic. Certainly, I'd go again, but I'd prefer to avoid being so micromanaged at a restaurant.
Favorite dishes: pork and Brussel sprouts, grilled avocado, grilled octopus, smashed (?) potatoes
Service is generally good, but courses came out a bit randomly, not well timed. Food is always yummy.
Awesome space, creative food, attentive service.
This was pretty disappointing for the reviews and ratings I saw when I booked. I love japanese food and sake and tapas but this was overpriced and I was served many dishes that seemed haphazardly put together, and poorly thought out. I will not be back
Our experience at Daikaya Izakaya was uneven. We were there for my birthday and though the reservation indicated the special occasion and was confirmed via phone message, there was no acknowledgement at the restaurant itself (much less a drink or dessert). Our waitress was aloof and at times rude, failing to answer questions about the menu and seemingly uninterested in the quality of our experience. Out of the seven menu items we tried, four were excellent (CHAWANMUSHI, HUMBA, Edamame and STUFFED SHISHITO PEPPERS), two were just okay (Mackerel and Cod Roe Spaghetti), and one was inedible (Beef tongue skewers). Generally, the food was underseasoned and the portions were small, even for a small plates restaurant. The ramen, downstairs, is exceptional, so it was disappointing to have a mediocre experience at Daikaya Izakaya.
My girlfriend and I love Izakaya. We have gone more times than we can count now and have items that we fantasize about for weeks before and after each occasion. I always appreciate when Jeremiah is our waiter as well because his knowledge of wine always impresses and improves our experience. The digestif he recommended this time was also superb and it was a perfect finish to our delicious meal.
Food was outstanding. Service was excellent and knowledgeable. I loved every part of our experience!
Very interesting and delicious food with a very knowledgeable waiter as well!
I've always had good food here, and this time definitely didn't disappoint!
Love the food here, so interesting and well prepared! No ramen, no sushi, no tonkatsu, no teriyaki... It's the Japanese you never knew you were missing. Love it.
I've always come back to this wonderful place, for HH, dinner, drinks & have never had a bad experience. It's become my "go-to" for myself, as well as my partner & friends. Everyone that has come here has had a great time. I love the experimental foods that rotate on the menu, the drinks & the decor. I always have felt like I've stepped into another world which is a great feeling to have. A food journey that has expanded my palate & taste. I can't wait for my next meal here as I know it won't dissapoint. Cheers to a great team, staff & welcoming environment, keep up the excellent work!
One of the best dining experiences from start to finish. Excellent staff! Food was amazing! We started with apps and drinks in the main restaurant and then went downstairs for ramen! They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable! A great time all around! Can’t wait to go back!!
I have eaten here many times. I did not think the food was spicy enough this time. We had to ask for additional spice.
The food is over pricey based on its quality. Greatly disappointed!
We’re a couple of out-of-towners who went for a date night during restaurant week. The restaurant week special tasting menu was amazing as was service. Ambiance was intimate with fun music and nice ‘mood’ lighting. Arrived a bit earlier than our reservation but we were seated promptly. So happy with our experience and will definitely be back for more!
The occasion was our daughter's birthday, a pretheater dinner, followed by a play. Unfortunately, it was D.C. restaurant week, the place was packed, noisy and they only served the special menu.
The food was very good, but it took a long time and we had a deadline. I will definitely come back on a normal day when we can enjoy each little dish properly.
After Theatre. We haven’t been here for about a year so it was a real treat. The waitress went out of her way to accommodate my husband and I as it was a fixed menu for restaurant week. The salmon with carrot purée was fresh and tasty. We ordered two items from the bar menu. The dishes came at regular intervals. All delicious and beautifully presented. We look forward to coming back and enjoying the regular menu again.
Always worth the trip! Menu changes slightly over time, but many solid staples such as Japanese 'chicken and waffles' with wasabi butter, homemade giant french toast, and Lox and onigiri are always must-haves! Dishes are small and great to share, and/or have tapas-style tastings. Cocktails and teas are fantastic. Non-alcoholic options such as homemade ginger beer are also wonderful. Whimsical decorations and kind wait staff top this fun, delicious location! Highly recommend for groups and dates. (Pictured - Pork and brussels sprouts, lox and onigiri, and wall decoration)
Good service. Food was delicious but portions were pretty small for the price.
