About Dafni Greek Taverna
Dafni Taverna, conveniently located in the heart of Times Square and the theatre district, provides a dining experience reminiscent of a small village in Greece. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, from the beamed ceiling to the wood plank floor, from the exposed brick wall to the soft Greek music playing in the background. Guests enjoy the hospitality and fine home cooking that the country is famous for. The restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine, prepared simply and deliciously, using only the freshest and purest ingredients. The menu starts with a large selection of hot and cold meze, and an array of classic salads, as well as a few innovations. Entrees include many of the traditional dishes, a selection of charcoal-grilled meats and fish, and a few intriguing additions, such as grilled quail on a bed of spinach, and braised lamb shank with hilopites (a type of pasta). Delicious, homemade baklava, galaktoboureko and rice pudding are prepared fresh daily in our kitchen.

Dafni Greek Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Food and service were very good--they had us out within an hour including drink, appetizers, and entree. Even had time for coffee except that the restaurant was very warm on this chilly evening so we were too overheated to have coffee or tea. The temperature in the restaurant was the one thing that could be improved. Highly recommend for pretheater.
Really enjoyed our post theater meal here. Very close to 42nd st theaters. Ordered the appetizer of three spreads with warm pita, grilled octopus and moussaka which came with a nice Greek salad. All were really delicious. Surprised that there was no Reisling on the white wine list but other than that, would highly recommend.
Dafni is ideally suited and located for a pre-theater or movie meal because the service is very attentive and the food is served very quickly. It has a very moderately priced menu with vegetarian choices and traditional kabobs and other Greek cuisine staples. The food is tasty but not exceptional.
The service was great and the food was good but not extraordinary. I might return if I were in the area, but I don't think I would go out of my way given all of the choices in the city. My sister really enjoyed the lamb skewer, but my chicken souvlaki was overcooked and dry. If we had more time, I would have sent it back. We were disappointed there was no hummus on the menu; the server recommended a fava bean appetizer that she said was similar, but it lacked flavor. The beet salad was interesting and decent, but I would not order it again. The restaurant is small and tables are quite close, so I did not care for the overall ambiance. The dinner was appropriately priced and a good value.
If you have theatre tickets on or close to West 42nd Street, this is an immaculate, well-managed haven for dinner. The food is plain but well presented, and the service is excellent. We had spanakopita to start--it could have been hotter, but the portion was generous, and the filling and pastry were good--followed by very plain chicken with rice that was helped by the addition of the tableside olive oil. The Cabernet was good and reasonably priced, and without any perceptible rush, everything was kept moving so that we had no concern about finishing before curtain time.
My only comment is that we told the server we'd like to wait a little while before ordering coffee and dessert. He left and came back in about fifteen minutes, and just plopped the check on our table. We took the hint and left. Other than that strange occurrence, we had an enjoyable meal. (Their tzatziki is delicious.)
I am Greek and I have to say the worst Greek food I ever had. The octopus was tough, the zucchini fritters looked like they were old, filled with breading and tasteless
and the gyro dry. Desserts were passable. Asked for Greek coffee and was told machine was broken. Will never go back.
I usually hit Dafni on my way back home to Wilmington!, DE, as it is right next to the Port Authority and a wonderful place to get a meal before getting on the bus. As a former New Yorker, I come up to NY almost every other month to get my city fix. This time I had brunch on Saturday. The place was not as crowded or noisy as it is during the dinner hour, which was nice. But our waiter had a horrible attitude. I was trying to figure out if I could add a side of Greek sausage to my Greek omelet. I have no problem being told no, but his tone and aggressiveness was not appreciated. I quickly just asked for the onelet, which was so-so, and hoped not to have to interact any more with him. Total turn-off and a shame as I know have to look for another restaurant to dine at before getting on the bus.
I love Dafni! Very good, very authentic Greek cuisine, pleasant ambiance, good value, good service & great location -- plus that ineffable personal touch, right down to the idiosyncratic spelling of that ancient Greek nymph for whom it's named...the only caveat I'd offer is to be sure & go early or late, as there can be too many happy voice raised during peak hours....
The location (especially for theaters on West 42nd) is excellent, and the ambiance and service pleasant. The food, unfortunately, was of mixed quality. We ordered four appetizers, only one of which, Greek sausage pieces on a bed of onions, was excellent. The broiled calamari was especially disappointing....cooked through, though not browned, and all rings. Large wedge of spanakopita was flabby and lukewarm. Fried pieces of zucchini were fairly good.
Wish it was better.
