Dafni Greek Taverna
Experience was 10x better than we anticipated. The appetizer sampler of 3 spreads was delicious. The vegetarian eggplant moussaka was tasty. The striped bass was a large portion. The 3-greens pies were very filling. The baklava was up there in the best we have had— not cloyingly sweet.
Originally hesitated to eat here because some reviewers complained about being rushed, rude wait staff, and filthy bathrooms. But, this was convenient to the theater,so we decided to try it. We found none of those problems. In fact, our waiter had a great sense of humor. We will be back!!
Be guided by your server, and the ask for whatever you order medium rare.
Food and service are always excellent. Prices have gone up since I was there in the fall, but still a good value.
Very nice very busy place with no noise abatement so quite difficult to converse. Charm and value.....please do something about the noise level!
Overall it was a pleasant dining experience. There were two reasons that I didn't give it five stars. I ordered the grilled shrimp which was butterflied, but with the shell and feet still on. The shells did not come off easily. I had to peel it piece by piece with both hands. Never again. Also, the bathrooms could stand to be cleaned more often.
Great food and good service.
Excellent food. Very fast service . A very pleasant surprise.
Great food and people. Prices are fair and we had a great time
The food is delicious and it is close to the theaters on the far west side of 42nd Street.
Quaint, great service good Greek food. We ate here before a show and the food was served quickly. Good portions and the Greek coffee was outstanding.
always a treat for the food and drink and when it isn't too hectic, it is even better.
The food was fabulous and the service was amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant to friends.
Excellent service! The food was good with large portions. Great location for theaters.
Lovely restaurant; noise level was OK for dining w/ friend w/ hearing aids. Portions are large and prices good. Unfortunately the food was only so-so! We had three spreads to start pita was burnt on outside and doughy; Entrees were rather bland. Wines were all pretty unremarkable. Service was attentive.
Another great meal. Only place we consistently dine when in NYC.
The four of us enjoyed a wide variety of appetizers for our dinner.
Love this restaurant. Love to order my vegetarian stuffed peppers. Price, location and service are always right. Happy Greek Easter
As soon as we walked in it looked like we were not wanted. Entire wait staff in back of the restaurant dreading their jobs. Our waiter was impatient and in a horrid mood. He had to go out of his way to speak and there were 0 cordials. Funny thing is he seemed to be the best of the deadbeats.
It’s amazing to me how you pay over $150 for your family to eat and you get this misery in return. No respect for the paying customer. We went to celebrate Greek Easter away from many of our relatives in Greece and we got this treatment. Even though the staff was Greek we received no hellos, happy easter or anything. Just really miserable staff that did not want to be there and dreaded every time another customer would come in.
Aside from that the restaurant was tired, old, dirty with an unkept kitchen. Surprised it could get a pass from the BOH.
The meats were hard like a rock and not fresh and the pita bread looked dirty and was cold.
Just a real shame that this place is open and the have the bottom of the barre working there. No hospitality, no atmosphere and bad food.
we came in to see a show with my significant other. mexican was not going to make the cut. i saw had a 4 star rating and was close to the theatre. we figured greek or mediterranean food was a good choice. the food and service were both excellent. glad we made the reservation. there was a waiting list. the noise level was a bit loud but bearable. was a great place to celebrate my birthday dinner
Fantastic fresh fish. Great if you are watching calories. Friendly, efficient service. Theater district location. Noise level was a bit too high.
Fast food Greek... quality is average to below... Bronzino fish had lots of bones... the grape leaves tasted like they came out of a can. Blah blah blah...
always delightful to dine here with very good food and wine in a pleasant setting and usually something to take away for another time.
Great little place with authentic Greek cuisine. Count it as one of our favorites!
Good food. Fairly priced. Great location
Nice decor. Eady to find.
We were a group of eight at Dafni for dinner prior to an 8:00 p.m. curtain on a Tuesday evening. Our table was up front by the windows. My daughter had suggested Dafni as she had eaten there before and it was a great suggestion. We started with two plates of three different dips and then had our main courses. Everyone was happy with their choices. I did notice that any grilled shrimp were butterflied and grilled with the shells on. We had two bottles of red wine, one rice pudding and one greek yogurt for dessert for the table, as well as very good coffee. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was bustling but the restaurant was large enough that there was space between tables. At the end, our check was about $200 for all. I would definitely try this restaurant again.
A party of three for a long overdue get together, one friend from California. Our table was available when we arrived at 6:45pm. We ordered beverages and asked the waiter for a few minutes to get settled. My friend spilled her Coke and it travelled to my side of the table, luckily not much on my slacks. The waiter came over with two (2), yes 2 paper towels to clean up a full glass spillage. Very poor cleanup, didn't look at the floor where my feet were. I had to stand up for 5 minutes while someone finally came to clean up. My friends enjoyed their dishes, I had a poor representation of Salmon, lemon pepper potatoes and greens. Best overall was the baklava.
One of the noisiest restaurants I was ever in.
great for a quick bit, decent Greek food. But not a "dining" experience
It is a pleasant place to eat near Broadway shows. Food was good. Very noisy. Fast service.
Amazing grilled red snapper but very disappointing grilled seafood dish (overcooked shrimps, salmon & out of scallops). Service mediocre but manager was very fair!
Great place for pre-theater lunch or dinner! Would highly recommend Dafni for the food, service and ambiance.
Great spot for inexpensive but delicious Greek food. They took fantastic care of us, making a mid-week birthday celebration feel truly special. Highly recommended. It's not a fancy spot, but it's clean comfortable and to repeat, delicious!!!
Quality was meh. Bland. Service was good though.
We had a good but not great meal at Dafni Taverna. The interior was quite nice and service very good. Some of our food was great and some not so good. The salmon roe was very good but the zucchini fritters were made with a dry heavy batter & were not very tasty or crisp. I wasn't able to eat them and the waiter did not charge us for them. My vegetarian mousaka was delicious, very light, tasty and melted in my mouth. The medium rare lamb shish kabob my husband ordered was tasty but very tough to chew and sinewy. We were disappointed that the meal was not better.
It is conviently located to many theaters, like the food, hasvegvan options and not overly priced.
Wonderful seafood and perfect for dining before the theater
For very good food at reasonable prices on the west end of Times Square, Dafni would be hard to beat. While the ambiance is average, the energy is high. At pre-theater times the service is brusk but attentive and the food comes at a hurried pace. While somewhat off putting, the idea is to get you well fed and to your curtain on time, which they do.
Hadn't been here in the past year or so, but feel like it was not as good as in the past. This used to be one of my favorite NY restaurants and I referred many people here. But this visit was not as successful. Was very specific about how I like the meat to be prepared, and it was not at all correct when presented. Would have sent it back but it took unusually long to get the dishes even though our order was placed before the restaurant even filled up. It was also very warm inside (the whole table remarked on this) and very loud and the bathrooms were dirty. With all this said everyone, else at the table liked their meal and it was their first time at Dafni. I might try again, just because we've loved Dafni in the past and they deserve another chance.
The staff was very accommodating as we arrived 15 minutes early and they allowed us to sit down
My own personal selection of Greek salad and grilled octopus
Was as follows:
The salad was very skimpy but the grilled octopus was excellent
( one of the best tasted)
All the other ladies had gyros
And felt it was hard to eat and the shrimp especially was not hardy
There wasn’t any cream for coffee-
Only regular milk which disappointed the ones ordering coffee ( plus they only had decaf)
I personally would return just for the octopus— it was outstanding
But, I doubt the others would agree with me
Excellent food at reasonable prices.
Staff is great and so is the atmosphere.
Can get a little loud with people talking when it is crowded, but that would happen anywhere.
The food is really, really outstanding!!!
