Super-noisy today, because packed, as usual pre- and post-theater, so conversation and digestion as well extremely compromised. Staff overwhelmed as another consequence, so service inattentive/slow. Then, the grilled bronzino was seriously overcooked when it finally came. And wine list severely truncated from previously. Despite location convenient to all W42nd St theaters and menu I adore, I’m not coming back.
Food and Greek beer were delicious, service great. Dafni needs to work on bathroom. We did get there early because we had Broadway tickets. When we first arrived, I went into the bathroom, to find a bottle of Windex next to the sink (which anyone who has seen "My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding" will find hysterically funny) and no trash pail to dump paper towels. I tried to open the cabinet under sink, only to find that the door was coming off. But broken door or not, we were very happy with food and service at Dafni and will definitely return and recommend it to friends.
Service was excellent and always a friendly atmosphere.
Food was decent. But the noise was awful. And it wasn’t even full. Some rugs on the floor and walls would make a difference.
Dafni offers a very good dining option in an area (near Port Authority) that is overrun by fast food. We had a very good lunch, with excellent service. We'll definitely be back.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's in one of the seedier parts of Times Square, but It's a lovely looking restaurant. The wait staff was very nice and attentive, the food came amazingly quick which is awesome if you're catching a Broadway show, everything was tasty and the portions were quite generous. The only negative was the noise level, but that's a very small price to pay for a quick meal in the theatre district.
Having had a couple of pre-theater dinners at Dafni, I thought it would be a good place to eat lunch after a movie in the neighborhood, and I was right. The spinach pie, a favorite of mine on the menu, was a generous appetizer portion, and with another equally tasty appetizer, was a filling meal. Dafni is distinctive for being an affordable Times Square area restaurant that is not part of a chain of cookie-cutter outlets. My only complaint--and it's not a serious problem--is that it took awhile to get the check.
Consistently wonderful. Brunch before matinee perfect place to go
Wonderful location and option for Broadway Theatre pre/post-show dinner. Very good selection of Greek food with generous portions at a fair price. A pretty and clean restaurant with great service, as well. If you like to watch masses of people swarm by then ask for a table near the window; otherwise look for a table back of room
Quick and friendly service. Attentive waitstaff. Excellent food and atmosphere.
Unexpected find in unexpected location after unexpected change in plans. Very tasty Greek dishes with vegetarian choices. Worth planning for next time.
Way too noisy. They need to do something to soak up noise - there are no carpets, tablecloths, wall hangings - nothing that would soften the din. Made hard to converse and to enjoy our meal.
Always have a good meal at.Dafni.
A very nice place to dine.
Always good food and always reliable service. It is my got to place in Manhattan.
Although we did not realize they were closing early for the holiday weekend they were very nice and the food came quickly - I highly recommend the food and appreciate the friendly service.
The most pleasant place to eat on 42nd Street! Near many theaters so perfect for pre theater. Not sure if they stay open late enough for after? Very good food, Ddecent in all respects. Lovely waitresss.
I love this restaurant..great menu, delicious food. The servers are amiable.
It is a wonderful choice for pre /post theater as the location is very convenient.
I confused this with my Sat. reservation. Nevertheless, lovely. Very affordable for Manhattan.
Always a pleasure to dine at Dafni! On this occasion, one of our party had pastitsio, one had a mixed seafood dish (over rice) and I had the salmon. All three of us found our food delicious.
always a treat although this time we had a new waiter who was a bit inexpert and was sloppy in pouring from the bottle of wine making several spills; we spoke with him and then he shaped up but it was not pleasant at first as he was very brusque.
I really wanted to love this place. Great menu,, pleasant staff, and reasonable prices. The portions are very generous. Unfortunately, the food was not very good. The filet of snapper was so filled with bones that I left most of it My daughter’s meal was lukewarm and a little dry. Spanakopita was a bit soggy. Other than the fish, nothing was terrible and some things were very tasty. Overall, though, the place is just fair.
We went there for a birthday dinner. Our table was ready when we arrived early and we were seated right away. The Ambiance was good and the wait staff was very friendly. I ordered the mini lamb chops and the birthday girl ordered the lamb shank. Both dishes were delicious I would highly recommend this location.
Great casual place to grab a bite to eat. Food was excellent and seemed fresh. Would definitely go back.
We had a table for 10 before a Broadway Show. Food was excellent. Great value. Amazing waitress. Got us out fast- no problem making the show. Ambience is that of a fine restaurant, even though it sits between a McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts on 42nd street. It has dark wood facade with window boxes. Very authentic Mediterranean ambience!
Went before theater Saturday for lunch. Quick service. Delicious food. Moderate prices. Will go back.
there were three of us and we all thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Nice decor, garlic hummus, pita bread, moussaka, grilled vegetables, spanikopita, avogolemono soup the best ever. Spanikorzo nothing special but all else— great! reasonably priced bottles of wine. very reasonable prices in Times Square theater district. highly recommend this
I pass this restaurant all the time and have been leery of it because of it's perfect location on 42nd Street. When a friend suggested it for pre-theater dinner, I checked it out on line and was surprised to see good ratings and moderate prices.
We both ordered standard dishes, moussaka and chicken kebabs, assuming these would be the best. The moussaka had a lot of eggplant and potatoes and a sprinkling of ground meat--I had to look for it; the bechamel looked and felt reheated, a little drier than expected, and this was confirmed by a definite lower-than-room-temperature coolness at the middle of the portion. The chicken was chunks of not-moist breast meat coated in herbs and grilled (microwaved?). They were chewy and all the seasoning was on the outside; no flavor had permeated the meat.
Tables are close together and it was hard to hear my dining companion. We could, however, hear the conversations around us easily. This place is clearly a pack-em-in, get-the-money, get-em-out operation. I would not return when there are much better restaurants within a block's walk.
Exceptional food, great service. A must for anyone looking for authentic Greek fare.
I love this place! Everyone is friendly, the food is very tasty. I usually get vegetarian mousakka and the dessert with custard that I cannot spell.
Too long a wait for food.
Dafni has not been great this time around. I had loved this restaurant for years but it must have changed owners or chef. The food was disappointing lately.
Dafni was just right for a good meal where my friend and I could catch up. While there was a small problem with my order, the wait staff quickly fixed everything. We weren't rushed, and the food was tasty.
Manager very tense and his mood is reflected on service
If they only have someone nice serving customers I would give this place 5 stars
Had never tried Dafni Taverna. Expected more . Grilled Octopus was tough. Sauce that usually compliments this dish was almost non-existant. Have had better in Manhattan elsewhere. Pastichio was ok but extremely salty. Grilled lamb Gyro was actually a Lamb patty ,not sliced lamb. Again , very salty. Cheese appetizer was salty ,but our waiter said he had told us that beforehand .
Wine list was ok and not overly pricy.
Can't say that I will return, unfortunately
We enjoyed our dinner after seeing a Broadway show. Helpful, knowledgeable waiter made for a great dining experience!
Lovely restaurant not far from the hussle and bustle of Times Square !
We went here after the theater for a birthday dinner for my wife. We both had the lamb chops and our server Natalie recommended an excellent red wine. Everything was delicious and nicely presented. The noise level was a little high, but tolerable. Service was excellent and the ambiance very nice. Recommend very highly.
Dafni is always a reliable choice in the theater district. It was noisier than I remember and the eggplant spread was too garlic-y, but it's location on 42nd St makes it very convenient. And its reasonable prices are much appreciated in that area.
