Dafni Greek Taverna
I have eaten at Dafni many times and liked it a lot. This time, the avgolemono was quite good, it the shish kebab was over cooked and disappointing and the service was inattentive.
Menu has good selections. However, when a Greek restaurant doesn’t serve a good moussaka, I won’t be returning.
We had a great time getting together with an Oregon niece in town for a conference. She has been to Greece numerous times, loves Greek food, and is used to the noisy, casual atmosphere and good food found at Dafni's. Portions were generous and prices very reasonable. Our second time there when in the city.
I like the food at Dafni but it is noisy which is hard for me because i wear hearing aids. Usually they are very nice about my request for a table where my back is to a wall. (Which allows me to hear better.) When I make a reservation on OpenTable I always include this in the request box. Last week we went there before theatre and were given a table where I did not have my back to a wall. Behind us were two tables which did back up to a wall. They were set up to accommodate two people at each. I went to the gentlemen seating people and explained my situation. He said he was saving the tables for a foursome. I then added that I had requested a table where my back was to a wall on my reservation. To my surprise he told me that my reservation only entitled me to a table, not a specific table.
I have worn hearing aids for many years, and almost always restaurants will do their best to accommodate me. When they can't, they are nice about it and I understand. This is the first time someone has been rude about it.
The food was awful. it was extremely noisy even though it was not full. Don't go.
Gut und gemütliches Restaurant
it's hard to make bad Greek food, but this place does it. zucchini fritters were as dense as hockey pucks, the zucchini chips were thick and soggy instead of thin and chip-like, the calamari was tasteless. Find another Greek restaurant.
Dafni always makes you feel welcome. I arrived earlier than my guests and had a seat at the table, no rush to order, no rush to get us out. They are good at watching the time for the theater crowd. Make reservations days in advance if you are going before theater, that's when it is most crowded.
Food really went downhill. My gosh wss I edible! And our waiter insisted we should get our hot appetizer with the main course bc it was hot and our salads were cold. Ridiculous..we cancelled the hot appetizers bc they were not timely.
Great for pretheatre. Food always good and they always get you out in time for the theatre. Very small bar in back of restaurant. Food is reasonably priced and tasty compared to other nearby Times Square touristy spots.
This is a restaurant we will come back to on future trips to NYCZ
this was an off night here as the place was very full and they had a skeleton crew for the waiters so everything was in a rush and hectic. the shrimp dishes were overcooked and almost burned and the other dishes were also not up to the usual standards here. hopefully it will be better next time.
Dafni used to be very good as a regular place to meet a friend for casual meal. It hasn’t been quite so good for the last six months or so — since the beginning of 2018. Their wine menu is very skimpy — that was true two months ago when I was there and it was true this week when I was there. Both times they told me that deliveries were pending. They seem to be down on the number of servers available. I was there for 20 Minutes before I even got to order. They’ve been a good restaurant for the last four of five years — they seem to be going through a troubled patch.
Authentic Greek Food. Pretty tasty. Good sized portions. Ordered the 3-appetizer platter and the steak. ALl were prepared exactly as requested. Had enough left over for a doggy bag. Large selection of menu items. Very good wait service. Liked the atmosphere and quick seating. Its not out of the ordinary food but if you're in need of greek food in the 42nd St. area right across from Port Authority- its a really good bet.
There was 6 of us for lunch. I chose the restaurant. Three of us loved our food, but three of my friends did not like their food at all. I think it was their choices.
Very good food, and service. Our waitress went above the call of duty on 9/22/18.
Decent Greek food at resonable prices at the edge of the theatre district. Efficient service w/o being rushed.
Don't let the fairly skeevy neighborhood across from Port Authority scare you away. Good Greek food affordably priced and nice civil atmosphere where you can actually hear the person across from you without screaming.
I ordered moussaka for lunch and my friend ordered a lamb dish. The moussaka was inedible and the bechamel sauce was hard and dry. The side salad consisted of just greens and a small amount of feta cheese without dressing. My friend told me that the lamb was dry and over cooked.
Even though I ate only two bites of the moussaka and told the waitress that It was awful, she did not offer to deduct it from the check or offer me another choice.
We would never return to this restaurant.
Dinner is always excellent. Menu is varied and has enough choices to satisfy everyone. Wines are reasonable and there are enough varieties foe everyone. Service is pleasant and professional. Dafni has become one of our go-to places before theater.
The restaraunt is pretty average, very good location, service is boarderline rude. Food is diner type, but using good ingredients.
Good food. I'm a repeat customer. Great and friendly staff. Service is good as well. Happy with the quality of the food. The Greek wine is also nice. Came here for dinner before seeing a Broadway show. Was seated right away with reservations. Will be returning if in the area. Thx
Dafni does a creditable job with a traditional Greek menu. We keep returning for pre-theater dinners.
The restaurant was so noisy that even sitting next to each other wasn’t adequate for conversation. I would not recommend this for a get together.
good food, convenient to theater but really, way too loud. service a bit slow
I've been to Dafni's many times over the years. The prices are reasonable, the appetizers great, and is very convenient to the theatre district. it's open from 11am to 10:30pm or a bit earlier or later depending on day of the week. which means that it's very convenient if you go to a matinee. The service is professional and quick and the wait staff generally nice.
Decor was not outstanding. Service was good. Limited drink selection, just certain wines and beer. Food came out fast and fish was fresh, potatoes were good. Would recommend for a quick lunch.
Food & service very good, location indispensable -- there are few reasonably priced alternatives in the nabe when going to theatres nearby and want a step up from fast food for a decent dinner. But the noise level is pretty intolerable -- all hard surfaces, nothing to quiet down the sound. Don't plan on any important conversations here!
The appetizers we ordered (octopus, fritters, halloumi) were good, but presentation was very underwhelming. The entree of lamb shish kebab and the Agean seafood dish were not as good. Particularly the seafood. The pasta was bland, there was a ton of water in the bowl, and the seafood itself was kind of disgusting. The salmon tasted really fishy and the scallops were undercooked but the shrimp was way over cooked. And it was just not a tasty preparation. I’m always looking for places to take out of towners when we get stuck in this neighborhood and am not sure I would come back except for appetizers. But my husband looked in their kitchen and said it was filthy. So that makes us less likely to go back as well.
Everything was great, but the airconditioning could be a 7 degrees cooler. It was a hot evening, but heat ruins the whole pleasant experience - while you see customers fanning their way thru dinner with the wine list.
A friend and I went to Dafni before seeing Anastasia on a Saturday night. So, I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. It's NYC I expect better than average food, but it's also so close to Times Square that I expect a tourist trap... I give Dafni a solid 3 stars. Food was good, not great.
We started with the Saganaki. It was baked cheese. I've had Saganaki served in so many better ways, that I was very disappointed. Baking the cheese led to slicing bits of cheese in an oil bath... not appetizing. For dinner I had the Bifteki & my friend had the Chicken Souvlaki. I substituted spinach for rice. Both entrees were very large. My meal was good not great. My friend enjoyed the chicken dish. Had we not been going to a show, I would've saved half the portion for the next day so it was good enough for an encore.
Patrons appeared to be a mix of New Yorkers (pick up & take out), fellow NJ/CT folks going to a show, & tourists. Reasonably priced for the neighborhood.
Food and service was wonderful but the noise level was too loud for comfortable conversation.
Great option in the theater district with food to fit all preferences.
I would not recommend this restaurant. My food and all my friends' food were dry and salty. I would understand if maybe one dish was like that, but the whole table's dishes?? Unbelievable. On top of that, the service was SO slow. It took over 10 minutes to get my water cup refilled. I don't understand how this restaurant has such good ratings for sub-par everything.
Had a lovely dinner between a two theater show day. We ordered a variety of entrees, from sea bass and salmon to chicken souvlaki, and enjoyed it all.
The food is very good. We enjoyed spanakopita and Greek meatballs ... both of which are must have appetizers. For dinner we had the gyro and pikilia chargrill platters. You get a lot of food for the price. I am disappointed that the ice tea is not free refills and there was no beer selection to speak of. But if you need to catch dinner before a show ...it is an excellent place that won’t cost you a ton and has good, fast service and is close to many theaters.
Very good for theater dinner
We shared five appetizers, dessert and a bottle of wine. It was more than sufficient for two people. The grilled octopus and baklava are a must. The wait staff couldn't be nicer. My only complaint was that the restaurant was very warm which was understandable because it was oppressive outside.
Food ok but the noise level is painfully loud. It ruins the experience.
Love the place!
