About Dafni Greek Taverna
Dafni Taverna, conveniently located in the heart of Times Square and the theatre district, provides a dining experience reminiscent of a small village in Greece. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, from the beamed ceiling to the wood plank floor, from the exposed brick wall to the soft Greek music playing in the background. Guests enjoy the hospitality and fine home cooking that the country is famous for. The restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine, prepared simply and deliciously, using only the freshest and purest ingredients. The menu starts with a large selection of hot and cold meze, and an array of classic salads, as well as a few innovations. Entrees include many of the traditional dishes, a selection of charcoal-grilled meats and fish, and a few intriguing additions, such as grilled quail on a bed of spinach, and braised lamb shank with hilopites (a type of pasta). Delicious, homemade baklava, galaktoboureko and rice pudding are prepared fresh daily in our kitchen.

Dafni Greek Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Meat over cooked and items described on menu left out.
I ate at this restaurant at least ten times before but not in ten last four at five months and I was very disappointed this time.
I would not recommend any dish with meat although on my last visit the fish was over cooked
We went early 5:30 before a play. By 6 it was full. You really need reservations. That’s because the food is so delicious. I’ve been before and usually get the mousaka. But my companions had the fish (plaki) and said it was outstanding. The restaurant is in a crowded unappealing location but it’s like an oasis in the Times Square/ Port Authority chaos.
Starting with the warm pita served as soon as we sat, the food was incredibly tasty, well presented, and generous. Service was very attentive, yet we did not feel rushed at all. Only downside was the galatobouriko dessert which was also very tasty and authentic, BUT was microwaved to warm it up, which just ruined the texture of the phyllo dough.
Still, we will definitely return.
The food was heavy handed, overcooked and bland. The zucchini fritters were doughy and tasteless, the chicken breast with capers, dry and the accompanying peas in tomato sauce, inedible. The lamb shank was a very decent sized piece of meat and flavorful, according to my husband but the pasta that came with it was cold and overcooked. All in all, a disappointing experience but for the location which was only a few doors from the theater.
The Moussaka was superb as was the salad. However, when I went to pay the bill I found that my wallet was missing and a very kind gentleman at the next table picked up the tab for me and my friend. I have no idea where it was lost but the restaurant was lovely and the service just fine. I would definitely return.
Fabulous meal with the family prior to seeing a show down the street. Cozy, brick ambiance and food was delicious. Not too noisy which was a plus. Fast service so no need to make reservation too early for pre-theater dining. Staff was friendly and helpful. My teen and preteen enjoyed it. Would go again!
My husband and I had dinner here on Friday evening before the theater. It was quiet when we arrived but by the time we left there was not a seat to be had. The food was delicious! I had red snapper and he had shrimp and we shared a Greek salad. The food was fresh and the portion sizes were excellent. The service was good. It was a bit noisy but it would not stop me from coming here again.
Food and service were very good--they had us out within an hour including drink, appetizers, and entree. Even had time for coffee except that the restaurant was very warm on this chilly evening so we were too overheated to have coffee or tea. The temperature in the restaurant was the one thing that could be improved. Highly recommend for pretheater.
Really enjoyed our post theater meal here. Very close to 42nd st theaters. Ordered the appetizer of three spreads with warm pita, grilled octopus and moussaka which came with a nice Greek salad. All were really delicious. Surprised that there was no Reisling on the white wine list but other than that, would highly recommend.
Dafni is ideally suited and located for a pre-theater or movie meal because the service is very attentive and the food is served very quickly. It has a very moderately priced menu with vegetarian choices and traditional kabobs and other Greek cuisine staples. The food is tasty but not exceptional.
The service was great and the food was good but not extraordinary. I might return if I were in the area, but I don't think I would go out of my way given all of the choices in the city. My sister really enjoyed the lamb skewer, but my chicken souvlaki was overcooked and dry. If we had more time, I would have sent it back. We were disappointed there was no hummus on the menu; the server recommended a fava bean appetizer that she said was similar, but it lacked flavor. The beet salad was interesting and decent, but I would not order it again. The restaurant is small and tables are quite close, so I did not care for the overall ambiance. The dinner was appropriately priced and a good value.
If you have theatre tickets on or close to West 42nd Street, this is an immaculate, well-managed haven for dinner. The food is plain but well presented, and the service is excellent. We had spanakopita to start--it could have been hotter, but the portion was generous, and the filling and pastry were good--followed by very plain chicken with rice that was helped by the addition of the tableside olive oil. The Cabernet was good and reasonably priced, and without any perceptible rush, everything was kept moving so that we had no concern about finishing before curtain time.
My only comment is that we told the server we'd like to wait a little while before ordering coffee and dessert. He left and came back in about fifteen minutes, and just plopped the check on our table. We took the hint and left. Other than that strange occurrence, we had an enjoyable meal. (Their tzatziki is delicious.)
