What Insiders Are Saying
Da Umberto is a classic old-school Italian joint, but without some of the shtick found in other Little Italy joints.
Amazing dinner !!!! Thank you da umberto
Da Umberto as always, consistently, absolutely wonderful. The environment is warm and welcoming, the wait staff is professional but friendly and extremely helpful, and the food is perfection with an Exciting andinteresting menu and specials.
this is obviously an enjoyable restaurant that pours a lot into its customer satisfaction -- however, there were a few annoyances. the room was extraordinarily loud, and I think I was able to catch only 10% of the specials when our waiter listed them (which by the way took such an extremely long time I was trying not to laugh and I wondered why they didn't just print the specials list... lol). this is definitely one of those places you'll have to shout a little bit to be heard. I ordered the truffle and mushroom pasta special which cost $60 so I was expecting something really special, and ended up with something just meh. i thought the value for what I paid was way too low, but i still enjoyed it.
one last thing that kinda rubbed me the wrong way was how the waiter kept thinking my boyfriend was ordering for me, and would always ask him questions about how the table was doing. that was gross.
on the flip side: the wine was great, appetizers were great, and felt super luxe throughout.
We go to dinner here every year after a business event in the area. The service is always top notch and the food is superb.
The food and service are outstanding. The staff is welcoming, and after one visit, remembered us on the second one (or are very skilled at faking it). I was reluctant to do a review because I don't want too many to discover this hidden gem.
Bring pen/paper to jot down daily specials as they are rattled off in accented Italian.
Delicious food and first class attentive service
Excellent food and service as always. Quality and recommendations by the wait staff always proved to be right on.
the Food and service are outstanding.
they are always on top of their game
this is a lovely place for a quite dinner
Terrible food. The panna cotta was tasteless. The cornish hen was inedible. I would never go back.
We love the place and always go there for special occasions.
Great! This place is consistently good. I have been coming here for over 15 years.
Excellent, my favorite Italian restaraunt in NYC
This is classic NY Italian, very high end old school dishes made just the way you’d expect them to be made. Never disappoints
Absolutely delicious, great service, and pleasant ambiance. Among the best Italian food we've had. Great menu and great specials. Be aware that some of their specials are priced far above their standard menu, so ask the price as needed. We've been dining here every few years for the past 25+ years, and it's always a treat.
No words to describe how fabulous Da Umberto is. A classic and chic Italian restaurant that never fails to delight across the board.
loved the place when I used to visit more frequently a few years ago. This time very underwhelming. Service was rushed, waiter never asked if food, etc was ok, salad was very bland, veal marsala was solid if not inspiring, chicken same and the pasta (a ravioli with an unfortunate level of brown sugar) made it inedible. Had to seek out waiter on way out to let them know how we felt. Disappointing and won't return. Many better options in city these days. Hard to keep quality apparently over many years.
Always the best
black label wine at 3 times retail is gouging the customer
A must when in New York.
The food is exceptional!!
So good I went two nights in a row...
Always get big "thank you's" from friends when a tell them about this great small slice of Italy in NYC
After years of living in Chelsea, we finally ate at Da Umberto for my husband's birthday, and I'm so glad we did! We had a WONDERFUL experience from beginning to end. The food was absolutely delicious, and they went the extra mile to make sure my husband enjoyed the evening (I wrote in the reservation it was his bday). My biggest impression was the level of customer service, from how we were greeted to the expertise of our waiter. My 10 year old accidentally broke a glass and within 5 seconds, without being asked, a fleet of waiters were cleaning our table and completely re-set it from the cuttlery to the linens, and couldn't have been nicer about it. It's not an inexpensive evening, but I left feeling the value was there. It'll be a dinner, and an evening, I'll long remember and appreciate.
It was a wonderful dinner. The service as was the food great and we had a lovely time. Recommending it to all. Had fantastic Dover Sole, superb.
This place has been around for a long time. But hadn't been there in a few years. Was blown away by how delicious the food was and how warm, friendly and professional the service was. Was like coming home. Going back soon! mmmm
We look forward to returning. The service and food was terrific.
Traditional Northern Italian cuisine...simple yet very flavorful. The service is impeccable!
One of my favorite restaurants. Food delicious, service attentive and nice ambience. Can’t wait to go again!
Amazing service and delicious food!
Da Umberto has been there seemingly forever. But familiarity hasn't diminished the quality of this high-end northern Italian restaurant. Lovely setting, warm welcome, really good (if predictable) cuisine. It is, by the way, the best restaurant (I know about) within easy walking distance of the Joyce Theater.
The only downside: It is expensive, even for New York.
We enjoyed our meal. We would return again
I've enjoyed this place for year. Wonderful food, service and atmosphere. Recently though, I ordered an expensive bottle of wine, a 2015 Chianti, and paid $485 for it. I later researched the retail price and found it's only $125 bottle. I find a nearly 4X mark-up egregious and offensive. I'll check the mark-up on my phone next time and negotiate before I order. In the long term, it's best not to take advantage of your patrons.
The food and service are always exemplary. A real gem!
In New York for the first time, this restaurant was recommended. Small, quaint, white table clothes. Service was very good. Highly recommend.
THE FOOD IS ALWAY EXCELLENT, SERVICE IS FRIENDLY.
DaUmberto is a neighborhood gem. Depending on when one's dining it could be relatively quiet, but on a recent Saturday night, the place was hopping. Service is consistently impeccable~ staff is the best. Every need is met. In fact, as the chef/kitchen is flexible, the diner is free to customize one's order. Highly recommended.
The service here is fantastic. All the staff work together to provide the best service for the guests. I gave them feedback about eggplant parmesan, it was very tough and chewy and had hard time cutting it with my knife. They immediately took my feedback and stopped serving the dish, they made it right by refunding us for the dish. Something were a little on the salty side but tasty in general. We plan to return again because I like their smoked mozzarella eggplant parmesan, I know they'll make it right the next time.
I would suggest that you ask for price on specials. They tend to be significantly more expensive than the menu items
The restaurant was lovely. The food excellent and service attentive. The antipasto for the table was fresh and delicious and the specials and menu extensive. The swordfish was great the branzino succulents day the short rib and cavatelli perfect. Side order of pasta with white truffles was well executed . The tiramisu was only ok, the ricotta cheesecake a bit dry but I don’t judge a restaurant by desserts. The coffee was excellent. We will be back.
The food and service at Da Umberto are consistently high quality. I dream about their polenta and broccoli rabe!!! My only request is always "Could you lower the music?" because the conversation is lively and energetic enough without music.
As always, food and service were amazing
