Cypress may be the most sophisticated ambiance in Charleston. It has been a favorite for years and the food complements the decor. Always local and fresh, flavors are skewed towards the Asian.
None of this really matters as in a week Cypress is closing as the location has been sold. I will definitely miss looking at the four story wine wall and watching servers climb the ladder searching for that special bottle.
We will miss you.
well dinner was good to start. Left and came back for drinks, bartender was rude and drinks were overpriced, sat upstairs to overlook the kitchen.... wow.... I've worked in a kitchen, I'm a pastry sous chef so I know the happenings. I was stunned on what I saw. Let's start with one of the line cooks playing a game on his phone then shucking oysters then only to resume playing his game. Nice dining experience but some things I would rather not see. Clear lack of focus and respect for product. Sorry guys, not impressed.
this place is closing shortly. was that the reason why the food was so terrible? I ordered the shrimp and grits. it arrived as if it was a brown soup with shrimp in it. my friend ordered the same and complained to the hostess about the soupiness. the hostess returned and plunked a soup spoon into my friend's bowl. we wasted good money on bad food.
I was extremely unhappy with our experience. First the staff had to ask the chef if they could change the sides out (after telling us they would not), then we ordered 2 of the specials. The tuna we were told would be medium to medium rare, it was cold it was so rare. So we sent it back and I think the put it in the microwave, it came back over cooked and rubbery. My husband got the chicken special and he said it tasted like it had been boiled. There were very few options for nonmeat eaters and we had 2 in our party.
For a meal that cost 120 plus tip, I was very disappointed and there should not have been questioned about serving me what I wanted.
Fleet Landing the night before had much better food, a better selection and friendlier service. I will not go back to Cypress again... there are to many wonderful options in Charleston to settle.
We enjoy eating here when we come to Charleston. The quality of food is always on spot and delicious. My favorite thing I tried was the fresh blue crab meat on the fried green tomato. It was amazing! Great selection of appitizers and entrees. Bartender was amazing as well!!!
Loved Cypress and the food so much. Lighting at the booths could have been better - I had trouble reading the menu. Noted other guests had to use phone flashlights to read menus as well. Our server was wonderful and had excellent knowledge of the entire menu. Hope that we can come back soon.
As aleays, the food was excellent. But the problem was with what we ordered -- the chateaubriand for two.
The $78 entree was composed of two 2-2oz slices of meat for each of us. That's about $20 per slice. Although it tasted great and came with Bernaise and rwo sides, I left unsated (had a caesar salad as well). I was unpleasantly surprised by the size of the portions.

As always, the food at Cypress was terrific. Caesar salad for two and chateaubriand for two. Yum! Unfortunately, service was not up to its usual standards. It took more than 30 minutes for our entrees to arrive after we finished our salads. We'll go back eventually, but will likely favor other spots in the near future.
I went here for Mother's Day and I'm glad that I did. My entire family enjoyed the meal and the service, it's such a shame that they are closing soon. My Mother and I had a cocktail at the upstairs bar called Hummingbird, which was extremely refreshing. They had a salmon app special that was amazing. They prepared the Caesar salad table side, a nice touch and it was amazing. The wine list was very broad with lots of options for any type of wine drinker. The dessert menu was so-so. But I highly recommend checking out Cypress before they close.
The only con I had was that it was noticeable that they were a little short-staffed which is understandable, and something they can't help.
No specials of interest. We opted for chateauxbrean. . veggies way over cooked. Our server very good. Excellent Caesar salad. Sorry this restaurant is closing. So few places in Charleston for white table cloths service. Seems like Charleston fine dining is leaving. Thank goodness halls and snob are still here.
While I wouldn't say this was the worst meal or experience I've ever had, as the service was really good, the food wasn't anything notable. My husband ordered the Steak Dianne. It was slightly tough around the edges and a little overcooked. The sauce that was over it was too much and too sweet. It's also served over a bed of mashed potatoes. I had the tuna steaks, which were brought to the table way overcooked. The tuna was white/gray, which if you enjoy a tuna steak, you know that isn't the way it should be served. I sent it back, in hopes that it would be better prepared the next time. It did come back cooked better, still not perfect, but edible. The second thing I'll note was that it was fried around the outside causing the entire tuna steak to taste like fried chicken. The side of edamame was pleasant. In my opinion, not worth the money spent.
It was great, as always! Mother's Day dinner with my dad but since I'm pregnant couldn't enjoy my beloved Lavender martini so the bar made a NA version for me. Beef was perfect, all the starters perfect, dessert perfect. Really wish you weren't closing. Have never been terribly sad about restaurants closing but have been coming here for almost a decade and the place is super special to my family. Thanks for everything, gonna miss y'all!
An altogether wonderful experience. Our waiter, Richie, was great. I was impressed that they had a wine I hadn't seen since being in France, Marsannay. We had that wine, and it was truly delicious. Our food was very well prepared and imaginatively presented.
My wife had been searching for heritage Gold Carolina rice, and that being served is one of the reasons we came to Cypress to enjoy it.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
This was our first time at the restaurant. We went with friends who had gone there on their honeymoon. In a city that boasts many fine restaurants, this was right up there with the best of them. A bit pricey, but less so than many Charleston restaurants. Food and service were both excellent. As a newcomer, appreciated the server making recommendations and not rushing us. A huge plus is free parking with validation.
Our first experience a year ago was excellent, but we came here to celebrate my husbands 30th, and we were incredibly disappointed. Our steak was significantly overlooked, they forgot my husbands soup his gnocchi was frankly terrible, and the fish we ordered was no larder than a post it note and not worth the price. There are MANY good restaurants in Charleston, and after this we will not be returning or recommending this to our visiting guests.
