Cygnus 27 Ratings and Reviews
Had a 7 pm dinner to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The greeter took our coats and had a table ready for us. We passed through the bar / lounge area which was quite full and loud. The views are very nice from the 27th floor.
Once we got our server, the night was great. We were well attended but not overly pushed through dinner. The calamari appetizer is super good, almost ordered a second one. The salads were fresh and tasty.
We had the paella and the scallops as main dishes and both were deelish. These were the biggest scallops I’ve ever seen!
Overall, I think this is a great place for Grand Rapids and we will return for sure.
The man who appeared to be the manager was very nice also and made us feel at home.
Cygnus is a great location--nothing like it in Grand Rapids. The paella was very good. Service (Danny) was very good. Spiced apple dessert fantastic. Wine list reasonable and approachable.
That said, two critical observations. The bar scene sound washed over the dining area, making a romantic dinner into a little like camping too close to drunk neighbors in a state park. Some hanging sound baffles or something from the ceiling could only help. But for a restaurant that has prided itself for years as THE place for a significant dining event, this is unacceptable.
Also, and this is a criticism of the OpenTable reservation system and their use of it. I made my reservation 3 days prior to our Friday nite dinner. OpenTable only offered me 515, 530, or 830 and later. I called Cygnus reservation directly and got a recording directing me to OpenTable. Yet dining thru the 630-730-800pm prime time, at least half the tables were empty THE ENTIRE TIME! What gives, Cygnus? What gives, OpenTable? Is there a secret, alternate way to get seated that I was unaware of.
This was our first time to Cygnus. I have severe food allergies and the knowledge of the staff was wonderful. Our server (I think her name was Anna??) She was excellent! Every one was so friendly and professional. I was able to dine with peace if mind that the kitchen staff understood my restrictions and took every precaution they could. I had no problems at all! Thank you!
We have eaten at Cygnus several times since the current South American influenced menu came in, and everything we've ordered has been good or excellent. The menu is creative, and has a lot of interesting tapas selections which make it easy to put together a small or full meal with plenty of variety. Seafood dishes, which can easily be overcooked, are consistently well prepared. The service is excellent, as is the view. The only issue we have is the absence of draft beer. In Beer City USA, with all of its wonderful craft beers, they can do better. The wine lists is not enormous, but the selections are well chosen. Serious food people will like Cygnus, as will people who just want a good meal. The prices are consistent with other upscale restaurants in the area, and actually better than those at Ruth's Chris Steak House downstairs.
I've been many times for drinks with friends and family. The view is like no other. This was my first dining experience here. While the menu looks unique and exciting, the output wasn't the best fit for us. I will try this again but, I suggest other proceed carefully.
We enjoyed Seared Diver Scallops and Paella Mixta main plates and found both to be delicious. The chocolate sphere was one of the best desert experiences anywhere. Our server was very good and attentive to our needs. A visit from the General Manager to check on our dining experience was appreciated. What a great panoramic view of GR city lights from the 27th floor of the Amway Grand. We will definitely return.
Restraunt wait staff and food was good...ambiance is not really there...80's type feel, needs contemporary updating...not romantic at all...if your looking for a casual dining experience it is decent environment but overpriced for casual dining...bar does not have a blender...upon reservation about a week In advance i asked for window table, upon arrival I was told that they have to save window tables for 4 top reservation holders ...we were sat in an undesirable location while several 4 top tables next to windows sat vacant throughout our dinner...my reservation was for 2 just to clarify...overall for the price there were several other restraunts that would be better suited for date night, romantic evening...if yur out with a friend or colleuge and want to overpay for a casual dining experience then it would be good...
The staff was friendly and helpful, the décor - lovely, the noise level - very high. The members of my party who had wine were very pleased. One person was disappointed because here filet was just pink and not rare but she ate it with pleasure. My paella was dry and disappointing. It was a busy evening so I understand the difficulty of preparation for a large group. For the price of the dinner however, I expected more perfection.
We had a fantastic meal at Cygnus 27. The food was delicious but the best part was our server, Carmen. She provided excellent recommendations for our food and for the accompanying wine. She was attentive to all our needs, but not overbearing. Request one of her tables if you can :)
Almost the entire menu was gluten free which is very important to us as we have a family member with Celiac disease. Eating gluten free doesn't mean you have to sacrifice any wonderfully flavored food.
We will definitely be back to enjoy the food, the service, and the scenic view.
