My husband and I had dinner at Customshop for the first time on Saturday for this birthday. He is normally skeptical about smaller restaurants who claim to prepare the best steaks....well let’s say he was pleasantly surprised!, “best steak ever” and he didn’t stop there, he was sure to dig into my delicious duck....a must have,!, amazing restaurant, food, service and ambiance...we will be back soon!
I was disappointed in our recent trip to CustomShop. The appetizers were fine - we had the salmon, brussel sprouts, and burrata. The spinach pasta was horrible; it tasted like someone had poured a can of campbell's soup gravy all over the pasta. My friend also didn't finish her dish - it was the snapper. She said that it was caked in butter and she couldn't eat it. I really liked what they did with the renovations - but they have lost their way with the food.
This place used to be a favorite of my wife's and mine, but the last meal was a bit pedestrian. I guess in 2018 the chef shut down the restaurant and revamped the menu and interior. Frankly, I didn't notice the interior redecoration but I did notice the new menu. Namely, they took the bbq octopus off the menu. That's like Soul Gastro Lounge taking the pork belly taco off the menu! How do you ditch your signature dish? Everywhere I ever order octopus, I compare it to the one I used to get at Customshop, and they took it off the menu?!
The rest of the food was fine. Some of it was really good. But frankly, for the money (dinner was $235 and we didn't even get a bottle of wine, just 2 drinks each), it simply wasn't worth the money. This place used to be a favorite and I am not sure I'll go back. I will say, the service was outstanding, it always is. I just wish the food was as good as it ever was, to paraphrase the Talking Heads.
Wonderful food, great service, nice wine list, not too big, but good variety, and very nice specialty drinks.
Everything was amazing!
We were anxious to try Customshop as it came highly recommended by several people. And we thoroughly enjoyed their sister store - Flour Shop. Our server was attentive and friendly. But the food was nondescript. We started with the beef tartar. I ordered the evening special -pig cheeks over pasta and my husband ordered the squid linguine. There was nothing that stood out about any one of these items.
Duck liver pate app was great! Portion size was much larger than anticipated. More than enough for my wife and I. For entrees I had a carrot stuffed pasta (fresh, al dente) with pork cheek (amazing). My wife had the corzetti. Also super good. I lost track of all the tasty cocktails that we had, but who cares? We had fun! A side note: We visited the Flour Shop last weekend... did not realize they are sister restaurants until we finished our dinner. Both restaurants are unique and really good.
We loved every minute of our dining experience at Customshop. The restaurant knew we were celebrating a birthday, so they started off our night with complimentary champagne. Our server, Constance, made several great recommendations to you. From the Yellow Fin Tune appetizer to the snapper, she did not steer us wrong! We loved the bread pudding so much and wished we hadn't been so full from dinner so we could've polished that off!! We will most certainly be back!
Excellent food and service. We felt like we had special attention, and our server was super knowledgeable. Burrata and ribeye deckle were awesome. Nicely done menu - highly recommend for a nice date!
Fantastic food. The homemade gnocci is outstanding! Great cocktail menu and wine selection as well. Definitely two thumbs up!!
Delicious cuisine served by friendly, knowledgeable staff in a comfortable setting.
Well, this was an enjoyable place !! I came here with a friend for the first time based on yelp reviews. Yelp didn't lie. Charming place in Elizabeth neighborhood. I had the snapper, which was cooked very nicely and served on a plate of corn and a delicious sauce.
Greg, our server, was very attentive and helpful with suggestions. Drinks were great ---- and his recommendation of the bread pudding was spot-on. What a delicious dessert !!
I'll recommend this little gem highly. Nice buzzing atmosphere, but not overly loud. A great treat !!
My parents were in town, and I was responsible for choosing our dinner venue. I couldn’t be happier with my choice of Customshop!’
Spot on as always. Thank you!
The custom shop has been our favorite restaurant for several years now. I don’t know if they got a new chef, but our food this evening was almost inedible and very basic cooking. We have always loved the unique blend of flavors that are created for each individual season. I had scallops with vegetable succotash. The scallops were super salty and the vegetables were undercooked, hard and tasted as if topped with canned tomatoes. My husband had the elk chop which was mostly fat and had something resembling green salsa jumped on top. It was my husband’s birthday and we always love the amazingly wonderful bread pudding, but we’re so turned off we did not even stay to order that. I wrote the restaurant an email and of course no one ever responded
Nicole, sorry to hear you had a subpar experience with us! Though I hate hearing that you and your date did not enjoy your dinner, I do appreciate your honest feedback. I‘d like to send you a gift card in an attempt to make up for your poor dining experience. Please check your inbox for the email I sent yesterday; I will need your mailing address in order to get that gift card out to you. Thanks again very much -- and so sorry you caught us on an off night!
The girl was cute, so I had a good time. Give my bowl cut’d brotha Greg a promo!
Love this place! One of my favorites :-)
Halibut was really good. Loved the ambiance and music.
The food was excellent and Jonathan took great care of us!
Fantastic experience. Overall wonderful service and super friendly. GREAT food.
One of our favorite charlotte spots, great food and service.
We held our Wedding Dinner at Customshop and the meal, service, wine, cocktails were, AS EXPECTED, AMAZING.
Great food and drinks. Service was very slow but the waitress was kind enough to offer free dessert.
This is a really interesting restaurant from the standpoint of a very limited menu with exceptionally prepared and presented food. My wife loved the focaccia bread which was presented beautifully. The burrata was fantastic and also elegantly presented. I had the black grouper loving how it was prepared and accompanied by a tremendous sauce that included saffron & turmeric along with the sweetness of yellow corn. The crispy brussel sprouts complimented our meals perfectly. One of the best items on the menu for me is the Lacroix Bordeaux blend. It's slightly dry, smooth, and pleasing to the palette. Greg served it all up and did an excellent job.
Great food, great service. One of our favorite restaurants in Charlotte.
We’ve been here a few times now. This time did not disappoint. Another excellent meal and a really great time overall.
The food is EXCEPTIONAL...I got the ribeye and the fingerling potatoes with horseradish and was transported to heaven. We were seated promptly (had reservations) and the service was attentive and polite. But MAN, those potatoes!!!!
Great food, great service, great location! Can’t go wrong with a date night or night out on the town!
We will not be back, too overpriced.
Excellent food in a relaxed environment. Great service too.
So delicious! Everything is great, especially starters. They made fresh spaghetti with butter sauce for our kids
Always a pleasure to dine at Customshop!!! Revamped recently and the food is better than ever.
Excellent service and amazing food—they made our first anniversary extra special. We will be back!
Very good service. Food was just fair. Didn’t like sitting in plywood booth that was tiny and very hard! Thought it would be more comfortable after the remodel. Bar area is also tiny.
Great food. Very interesting flavors in food and cocktails. Pretty pricey though.
Food was excellent, Zoe our waitress was top notch! Be there again soon
Food was so so, and overpriced. Service was great though.
It was ok, but they messed up multiple times and didn't offer any corrections, the prices were about $3-4 per item than what they were worth... and that not taking into account being in Charlotte instead of a BOS/NYC/SFO, which would make it even less worth it.
Plenty of other options, skip this place.
I don’t believe our experience was typical, as this place came highly recommended by friends. But the execution in our food was not up to the level we expected. Around the time our main courses should be coming out we were informed that one of our entrees had a problem and we needed to pick something else. We selected the closest alternative which was a few dollars more expensive and were charged the higher price. We also ordered their signature steak, the Deckle, and were told it would be prepared mid-rare. It was instead medium well and fairly dry. We asked out server about it, and he brushed it off saying that was how it was supposed to be. We saw two tables down someone else with the same dish where it was bright red and looked perfect. What we had was a $45 over cooked steak. Overall, a bit disappointing.
We have always loved this place, but this time we felt that while the food was good, it was a bit lacking. Plus disappointing the octopus was removed. Service fantastic as always and wine list top notch.
