There appears to be new management and new cooks at Curry Mantra. The food was good, but not as good as it used to be a couple months ago. The service is also not as attentive to the customers as it used to be. I would still recommend and hope that these are growing pains as someone else takes over the management.
Curry Mantra is one of the best Indian restaurants in the DC area. The service and food is excellent. I like my food spicy and my wife likes her food mild. My Chicken Curry had the right amount of kick and my wife's butter chicken was just perfect for her.
Lamb Saag and Butter Chicken are my go-to dishes. The lentil cups appetizer is quite good, as is the mango lassi.
Normally, I would say that the food was as superb as always. However, this time I was shocked how spicy the tandoori dishes were. My dining companions ordered the shrimp, the salmon, and the mixed grill tandoori. I got Chicken Vindaloo because I was in the mood for hot. The salmon, normally so perfectly spiced and prepared, was hotter than the Vindaloo! Not a problem for me but the others at the table are more moderate when it comes to heat levels.
The food was excellent, as always. However, the service was uncharacteristically poor.
Great food, good ambience. Service needed to be a little more polished, but we received hospitality from each staff member with a smile so nothing a little training doesn't fix.
Need to do a better job of controlling the cold air entering during the winter months please. It was very chilly. Thanks
Curry Mantra is our usual "go to" place for Indian food. But this visit was disappointing. The food was good (non-veggie Thali and shrimp biryani), but the service was downright awful. First we had to ask for the wine list and then no one stopped by our table to take our order for at least 10 minutes. After that, the service was indifferent and very very slow and the waiter who took our order had an attitude that was very offputting. No one stopped by the table to ask if we needed anything and in fact, we had to stop a server to ask for a check. There was plenty of wait staff and the restaurant was only 3/4 full, so there was no excuse for the poor service. We will likely come back, because this was not typical of this restaurant. But had this been our first visit, we would never come back.
I'm glad this was not our first trip to Curry Mantra. Service and food has always been top notch. But not this time. it was 6 o'clock on a Saturday and the place was more than half empty. But after placing our order, we waited 45 minutes before inquiring about the status. The server came back the first time without any real information, just confirming that our order was back there being worked on. We asked how much longer and were told 10 more minutes. We didn't really trust the response and now we were running late, having to get to where our 86 year-old parent lives and helping her get ready for bed So we left. We will return and give Curry Mantra another chance. But not anytime soon.
We have been going to this Curry Mantra for about 4 years. They started out as a great surprise with very good authentic quality (and inconsistent service). It has become progressively worse each time in the last year. Service is now consistently bad. Over the last 3 times, they have consistently left at least one part of our order out (waiter never writes anything down) and they are not very attentive. We always believe in giving a second chance, but now they have started overcooking the food (tandoori platter, naan) to boot! I'm Indian and I have to say: I'm a pretty good judge of the quality of many cuisines, but particularly Indian. We have given them enough chances. I'm moving on and looking for something else.
Food and service were excellent. The Indian back ground noise was too loud and I could not hear the waiter . It also repeated itself during the meal
I recommend this place for the food. Maybe they would have turned down the music if I asked
The food here has always been consistently delicious. We have never been disappointed.
The food was average but the service was bad. The waitress was unexperienced and totally unable to respond to our questions about menu items.
We asked to speak with someone else but she either didn't understand or didn't want to get help.
Of the two entrees we ordered one was the wrong dish and we had to send it back for the correct entree.
We asked if two types of naan could be combined in one 4 piece order, 2 of each, we were told they couldn't do that. The food was ok but not worth the price had it not been for the Groupon discount. We won't be coming back.
Usually five stars, but this time our server was a bit rattled, the wine delivered a little late, and the nan a bit too crisp. On the other, yummy lamb roganjosh and fish curry. Always superb main dishes, with some selections involving goat and regional dishes not usually found at local Indian places. We go here often. The staff is pleasant, and the fine musician who plays in the main dining room (at least on weekends) delivers the ambiance of being in Delhi.
Been there many times. Still great! Lots of dishes I hadn't heard of, despite eating at many other Indian restaurants -- and usually delicious when I try them. I've been a big fan ever since it was their only location, and one storefront instead of two. I've even had them cater a party -- and no, I'm not Indian, nor was the party an Indian occasion.
Great regional Indian menu! Live music. Excellent service
What a lovely surprise to find such a beautiful interior in a strip mall! The food was so flavorful and delicious. Our server , I'm afraid I don't recall his name, was perfection. Attentive, helpful and attentive in just the right amounts. We will definitely go back!
A wonderful neighborhood gem. It is brightly colored and the staff greets us right away and they are very friendly. Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Saagwala are our go too dishes. Always excellent. Onion Kulcha and Garlic Naan - fantastic!
Curry Mantra is one of our regular places when we are in the mood for Indian food. The food is consistently good. I ordered the mixed grill and my husband ordered the spinach/lamb dish. both were very good.
Great Indian food. One of the top Indian restaurants in the Washington DC area. The service was wonderful. Our server was very attentive and the pace of the meal was just right.
The best Indian food for miles around. The only place we ever go when we want their cuisine.
Seven friends (and an infant) met at Curry Mantra for a relaxed, tasty meal. Staff was very accommodating as some arrived later and left earlier. We shared our dishes family style. The food was very good, with the butter chicken and lamb tikka masala particular favorites.
We've been to Curry Mantra - I several times with family and friends. Our last visit was with a couple who was dining for the first time. They loved it!
Love the food, the music and especially the attentive staff. We've been lucky to sit at Anita's table during most of our visits, and she's great!
We visited for a reunion of sorts with new friends that we recently met on our tour of India.
The food was as good as what we had remembered from our trip and the music on Saturday evening was an additional treat.
We'll be back again and again.
Thank you for a lovely evening.
I was disappointed and frustrated that I was able to book a 9:15pm reservation on OpenTable-upon arriving, we were told that the live music they have on Saturday nights had ended. After ordering we were told the restaurant would be closing. They had us out the door by 10:00. What a waste of an evening to be rushed. Why would a reservation be available and accepted when a reasonable amount of time to let the patron dine is not afforded?
We were there for a late lunch. The food was excellent - both the buffet and ordering from the menu.
Loved the modern mixed with old school ambiance. Food was great.
The food was good, specially with the live music. However, the prices for every item were way too high for the value. Overall, the food quality was good, service was mediocre, but for the price I paid, it was definitely not worth it. And there was a 20% gratuity added automatically, which was too much for the overall experience.
Great food, great ambiance
My husband and I dine at Curry Mantra with some frequency. He loves the Thali meals and I love the Biryani. This time we did not order any naan (which is always good) or an appetizer, but we frequently do. highly recommend.
We've eaten here a lot. We've recommended it to everyone we know that loves Indian food. The meal was and is always fantastic. Some of the best Indian dishes outside of London.
Food is great here, authentic Indian food with a variety of dishes for meat lovers as well as vegetarians. Service is excellent, especially filling glasses of water due to spicy food!
Love the food here and have never had a less than outstanding dish. Some regional and family specialties not found elsewhere. Goat curry, nice fish, and a yummy lamb rogan josh. Live dinner music on weekends that's lovely. Efficient service (though a little slower this past weekend maybe because of the Valentine crush) and a lovely, sweet waitress. Tables are a bit close together to handle traffic up and down the aisles, but just ask to sit in the second dining room.
We have gone to Curry Mantra for the last 3 years for my daughter's birthday. She loves Indian food. Saturday night is always extra special since there is life music. The food was outstanding as always. The service was not as good as it has been in the past but it was extremely busy so that was probably the reason. We will definitely be going back again.
We have dined at Curry Mantra on several occasions without any problems, food has always been very good. This time however, my wife ordered the Chicken Biryani, which in our experience has always been a mild but flavorable dish. This time however, the chef went wayu heavy with the chili oil which made eating it a challenge for me (and I like spicy), but way too hot for my wife. NOTE TO CHEF: If a Biryani is going to be served incendiary, it should be noted on the menu. My chicken curry was very good.
We've been to Curry Mantra several times - the Tandoori Salmon is a huge draw! But on this visit (7 pm reservation on a Saturday night), they seemed short staffed. We put in our order for garlic naan when we were seated, knowing it can take a while for that to come out. They asked for drink orders but we decided to stick with water. Unfortunately, we repeatedly had to flag down someone to refill our glasses! It wasn't clear if there was someone dedicated to working our table, or if it was just catch as catch can. The bread came out hot and tasty, and when the bus person came to clear the basket we asked for a refill to have with our meal. It didn't seem that he spoke English, so we were doubtful we'd actually get more bread, and as it turns out we didn't. There was also a couple at the restaurant with a fussy baby, so that was a bit of a distraction. They did their best to quiet him, but they wanted to enjoy their meal (and it was cold outside). All in all the food was delicious, but the service issues would make us hesitate to return. Perhaps the lunch buffet is the way to go!
The dinner was wonderful. I ordered the goat curry for my main meal and Curry Mantra has one of the best recipes for this dish that I have had anywhere.
My guests and I were impressed by the food served by Curry Mantra in Fairfax, VA. The vegetarian and non-vegetarian Thali are the best values on the menu as they are served with rice, naan, and a sweet rice pudding. If one has never had Indian food before and/or is intimidated at the prospect, this is a great place to start.
Curry Mantra is always very good. The menu has a wide selection, and I have never been dissappointed with my selection. The service is attentive, and the ambiance is always pleasant. It is such a pleasure to have all this so close and convenient to Fairfax. Thank you Curry Mantra.
Very flavorful Indian, but without overpowering my or my wife's taste buds/heat tolerance.
