You know a restaurant is good when you're still dreaming about your experience days later, and can't wait to return. There was not even ONE thing wrong with anything we had. Drinks were unique and delicious. The cheese and salami selection came with wonderful sweet and savory condiments. The desserts were not heavy, and unbelievably delicious. The main courses were amazing, and every bite was flavorful. All of the ingredients used could be tasted indiviually, and the combination was spectacular. The service was the best. Our waiter gave us good suggestions, and didn't hover. We never felt like we needed to get out of there in a hurry. The seats were very comfortable, and lent themselves to lingering. I can't wait to go back!
First went to Cucina Urbana with a group of foodie-friends. Each of us ordered a different dish and shared with each other. All aspects of this food "experience" were fantastic! This time, I reserved a table for a large group for my post-college graduation lunch! We were seated in their Wine Room; which provided privacy for both my party and the other people eating there. My family and friends are loud...lol! The waitress was phenomenal and the staff were terrific! Not once did anyone have an empty glass not filled nor an empty plate not removed promptly. There was not one unhappy guest and the ALL the food was amazing! Everyone said they are going to come back in the future!
Creative well-priced cuisine in a vibrfant uban setting. More than 10 meals here, and every one was a pleasure!
Great place to get really modern food, best steak I have had in ages! Great wines, very noise but who cares with this food!!! you def. want to go here! I can't wait to get back.
Always enjoy eating at Cucina urbana when we are downtown for a play. We enjoy the selections with memorable favorites and new choices to tempt us. One of our favorite places.
Love this experience. Be sure to get reservations.
Very good restaurant. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed. Glad we made a reservation. Thanks.
I'd heard about Cucina Urbana for years, but put off going because I assumed it would be trendy. I was, however, completely enchanted when I finally dined at Cucina Urbana. My boyfriend and I had that wonderful experience that only great venues can create; we were completely relaxed. I felt like Cucina Urbana was my spot and a lot of other people just happened to be there as well. Kevin, our server, played a major role in making us feel completely at home. I recommend Cucina Urbana wholeheartedly!
this place was decent, food was good (not the best just 3.5 out of 5) service was good and knowledgeable (our waiter explained the wine with a lot of knowledge) we had brought in our own bottle and were planning to open it (20 dollar corkage fee + 8 more for opening the bottle.. i totally dont agree on this)i dont mind paying the 20 dollars for a corkage fee but im paying another 8 dollars for corkage fee again? we settled for a bottle @ 45 but we still got charged a corkage fee of 8 dollars. I dont think i would be coming back here again, there are many other italian places that serve great food and have a great wine selection.
Love, Love, Love Cucina Urbana. Always look forward to going and am always rewarded with a delicious meal. The Chocolate Budino is to die for. Also the Chicken Jidoori is awesome. Have never had a bad meal. Highly recommend it.
Great service and fabulous food! One of the best in San Diego.
I'm not sure about other days of the week, but making reservations seems like a must for a Saturday night (which we did). Our table was ready on time and the decor is a great mix of reclaimed/recycled materials, and the space is open. One of the hostesses didn't smile at all, but she may have been having a rough night. The other hostess was pleasant and our waiter, Anthony, was perfect. The staff is attentive, polite and knows the menu. It took a while to get our food, but it was packed that night. The food is excellent; we had the brussel sprouts, polenta croutons, lamb rigatoni and lasagna.
Our entrance and seating was fantastic as the hostess was top notch. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant - wonderful and service was fine considering it was the noon hour and the servers were very busy - pretty much every table was taken. An enjoyable lunch and presentation.
Great ambiance, the lunch menu was varied with several choices and well priced. Good service. Thank you, we'll be back.
Food great as always. The ragu on polenta is always my favorite.
We had a great time at this restaurant. The food was good and we liked the menu offerings. We would return here when in San Diego again.
Love, love, love this restaurant
We went fith friens. It was our first time. We all said we would love to return. Food was terrific.
Outstanding as always. Server did not rush us, but was attentive to our needs. wine and food were excellent, reminding us of our time in Tuscany. I would recommend the branzini for 2.
Our granddaughter chose this restaurant for her 21st birthday dinner - she enjoyed the experience. We, however, thought the noise level was unbearable, the food disappointing and therefore, overpriced. The service was good but the busboy was too brusque and anxious to clear our table. Even if the food was good, we would never consider this restaurant as a place to meet friends for dinner - conversation was impossible. Too bad because you're within walking distance from our home.
The food was great...I didn't give an "outstanding" rating because the pasta was not al dente, which can make or break a pasta dish. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, calm environment, this is not your place. The best part of this experience was our waiter, Antonio (Anthony). He was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu (food & wine). He asked what I liked in a wine and then made a recommendation that was perfect. He knew we were celebrating my friend's birthday so he made sure to arrange a surprise dessert with a candle. He was very pleasant; always smiled. Ladies, I recommend you request his section when you visit this restaurant...you will not be dissappointed. Plus, he's also very nice to look at :-) Buon appetito!
Upbeat and attentive staff. Various seating options - table, bar, community table - to suit your mood or approach to reservations. Nice menu selections with various dining options - appetizers, boards, entrees for 2 - to suit your mood. Great flavor combinations prepared just right.
Great ambiance & decor. Italian food with a kick!. Loud and trendy.
It's not your typical Italian restaurant - no pastas soaked in red sauce. There were a lot of choices for any palate. It was a fun dinner out. My husband and I would definitely go back.
I have wanted to try Cucina Urbana since we moved here 8 months ago. I've tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to make a reservation. This time I made the reservation several weeks in advance as soon as I had purchased tickets for a show at the Old Globe. Even several weeks in advance, there were no reservations available between 5:30 and 6:45, so we made a reservation for 6:45 p.m. Waitress helped us get out in under an hour. Wine bottles not marked up so inexpensive. Food was disappointing after all of the amazing reviews. Appetizers: Mussels - miniscule, sauce was too salty, imbalanced, overpowering; olive tepanade - too salty (and I LIKE salt). Short rib pappardelle - 80% meat, imbalanced dish. Spicy shrimp puttanesca - good.
It is way too noisy, distracting. Food was very good. Service, excellent, but a bit slow. It was difficult to visit with our other couple because of the noise.Bar seating seems to be the thing, which we were not into. ANother angle, if you can get a window, high-stool and table seat by the entrance, it's fun to watch the parade of people entering, waiting to be seen and seated. The noise is not so bad there and the entertainment is better. Small plates can be enjoyed during the "show".
Can't go wrong here. The only difficulties will be deciding what to order. The place is very loud and crowded during dinner hours. Take a group and order items to share so that you can try many of the wonderful dishes.
Fantastic decor. Everything has a warm rustic feeling while still managing to remain clean and fresh. Food was delightful. Started with a Roasted Eggplant and Goat Cheese pizza and later had Mediterranean Octopus (which was done perfectly!) Another in my party had the Veal Piccata and that was definitely one of the best I've ever had. Make sure to make a reservation as this place does fill up quickly. The waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable. Very attentive. Worth every bit of downtown traffic!
Good food and wine selection. Very nice free shuttle service to the Old Globe Theatre
Cucina Urbana does a phenomenal job with their food. It's a very unique and cool place. My date loved the decor and the overall atmosphere. And we both enjoyed our food and dessert.
Great food and great service! They may want to look into their acustics - it was almost overwhelming loud and it was a Tuesday night.
Fantastic food and service...VERY loud and difficult to carry on a conversation but otherwise great!
We ordered shrimp pasta, it was overlooked.
The duck pasta was bad ...too sweet and pasta was pretty raw.
The fish was very good.
The time before we visited the restaurant the food was much better.
We have been here several times and it always simply --- delicious! This time we took friends of ours who had not been there before and they totally enjoyed it. The atmosphere is lovely but can be a bit noisy and a little hard to hear. But other than that the gnudy and blossoms are our favorite starters!
Our waitress, Jessica, was very knowledgable and helpful with the menu,as well as attentive throughout our dining experience. The timing of the meal was perfect, we were able to meet our theater engagement after the dinner. Definitely will go back.
Though we waited a bit for a table (people were having just too good a time!). The service and food are probably the best in San Diego. The kitchen and staff are passionate about good food, and we were treated to a great and memorable dinner. We,too stayed long at our table!
I wish there was a radio button for "almost too noisy". While almost everyone in our group liked their meals, I do think the hype is working against them (expectations impossibly high). We had a reservation for dinner and the whole party arrived on time. We were told 3-4 times that they were just waiting for the other table to pay the bill, ready the table, etc. The staff and management were very nice about it and even provided us with two free appetizers. We ended up getting seated 45 minutes after our reservation time. Still, I wasn't annoyed b/c (a) I wasn't starving (b)I was allowed to sit at a table (no seated waiting area) and was catching up with friends I haven't seen in a while. The free apps helped too. Not sure a 2nd time
Great as always! Tracy knows how to pick a staff, find the creative chefs and showcase a winning restaurant!
Food was good, but noise was overwhelming sometimes.
Don't put your fork down or they will remove your food! I was very aggravated with how fast our food was being removed from our table. The bread platter was removed before we were done and one of the desserts was removed before the person was even finished. Did not appreciate the rushed feeling. However, the food was delicious.
