We had the best time. Sat at the chef’s table (aka table overlooking the kitchen) and got to chat with the chefs and manager about our meal, which was a hoot and a half. Great food and great service. Highly recommend.
Consistently great food and service.
We were in the area for just one day. Drove two hours and wow what a pleasant experience. The food was outstanding, especially the soups. Would definately recommend this as a special lunch experience. It is crowded, fun and delicious!
We came at 9:00; the restaurant was calmer as time passed. We liked the intimacy of the small size. The gnocchi was outstanding!
Had a great dinner with my kids while we were doing a college visit in Charleston! Food was amazing and creative. Highly recommend.
My wife and I would have probably enjoyed our experience at Cru much more if not for the unprofessional conduct of the general manager. Upon our arrival, he was occupied in the kitchen. After a brief wait, he came out. I indicated the time of our reservation, for which we had arrived on time. He looked at his booking list and stated sharply that " I don't have anything for you," without further explanation. Before i could present a copy of the Open Table reservation, he then laughed and said "There's a table over there, pointing to a table at the far end of the adjacent room and said, "Go sit there" without any further explanation or courtesy. It certainly made us feel like unwelcome intruders.
We were entirely pleased with the service of the wait staff, but the general manager's lack of hospitality sadly undermined their best efforts.
Great food -we tried several different things -the tomatoes were amazing -the rest of the meal was good . Very noisy-I would do take out or sit outside when it is warmer .
Simply one of my fav casual dining lunch places on Earth. It’s casual, small (def get a res), and the freshest and most delicious food! Service is great. Although the place is small, the staff moves and serves efficiently. Everything I have eaten has been delicious, but I think my favs are the fried goat cheese salad over greens, also the truffle fries, the shrimp sandwich too, fried calamari, and turkey avocado sandwich. Honestly you can’t go wrong. Just make sure to book a table before you go. They aren’t open on Sunday or Monday.
1st time there and I would definitely go again..staff was very friendly..food was extremely good.5 stars all the way!
Wait to be seated even with a reservation. Then waited a long time for food. Food was good, but portions were tiny. Very cramped inside and very loud. I would order again, but only to-go as the food was tasty, but the overall experience was less than desirable.
The food wasn’t as good as the last time I ate at Cru Cafe but the atmosphere and service were great. We enjoyed our evening.
Fabulous dining experience in a wonderful older home. Everyone's meal exceeded expectations! We all got something different and loved it!
Some of the food was very good and we would recommend (fried green tomatoes and flourless chocolate tort). The fried chicken was very disappointing and was basically a cordon bleu chicken pocket! Expected better than that from a restaurant of that caliber. Nice waitress who offered another dish, but at that point, the show was over!
Cru Cafe was not memorable. Food was fine but there are other places in Charleston that are more enticing.
We had heard about this Restaurant from Dr. James Jennings in Greenville South Carolina. He says it is his favorite place to eat and it could possibly be ours now.
I always go to Cru when I visit Charleston. Fresh delicious and everyone is so nice!
One of our favorites in Charleston. Always fabulous.
Our food was delicious, beef brisket sandwich melted in our mouth and the turkey avocado sandwich was the perfect blend of flavors. Also had a side of the mac and cheese. Crusty on top creamy cheese, great combination. We also were lucky enough to sit at chef's counter and had fun interacting with chefs and loved seeing everything else on the menu plated. Service was top notch. Made a reservation for lunch, there were several groups waiting to get in when we arrived about 12:45, glad we got seated right away. Looking forward to going back.
Got off to a bad start.
First we were ignored. Then the maitre d’ came up, asked if we had a reservation and then disappeared.
He only reappeared when I stopped a waitress and firmly protested.
He then came back and said he’d been checking if we had a reservation. This was a lie - we could see home chatting in the kitchen.
At this point I would normally have left. But it was late and we were on foot. So we stayed.
The meal was very good indeed and our server really knowledgeable and helpful.
Would we return? Probably not as long as ‘Mr Attitude’ works there
Had reservations for a late dinner (8:30 pm) big crowd and our table was delayed however they were very accommodating and gave us a free drink for waiting. The food was excellent and I would definitely recommend it.
Yearly family vacation
Excellent food, service and ambiance. The Mac and cheese is out of this world!
It was phenomenal!
Fried oyster salad was amazing! Cozy seating. Quick service.
Knowledgeable and friendly wait staff. Food was excellent. It’s a bit of a tight fit but well worth the minor discomfort.
We had the most lovely experience at Cru. The food could not have been better. Awed by the presentation. I always judge a restaurant by the salad, both of our salads were wonderful, fresh ingredients (not packaged greens) and unique ingredients. We both enjoyed seafood and were delighted by our choices. Our server and the host were warm and engaging. If visiting Charleston, we highly recommend Cru. You will not be disappointed. Make reservations well in advance!
Fried green tomatos a must. In the heart of Charleston.
Always great food at Cru!!
Cute setting in Charleston just a few steps away from the touristy places. Cozy and comfortable. Food was good. Service was very good.
Down in the Charleston area for a few days with our three 16-20 yo kids over Spring Break and ate very well, but Cru Cafe was our favorite! Could only get a Friday 6pm reservation, so made sure not to eat much lunch. Special short ribs over potatoes was great, crispy duck breast cooked perfectly, our 16yo’s CAB NY strip was cooked perfectly. The fried green tomatoes and fried brie appetizers were gone in an instant. Service was great. Just an all around wonderful meal.
Had high expectations and was very hungry when we showed up for our 2:45 lunch reservation. We noticed a large group departing which in turn played a part in waiting 45 minutes to get our order; an hour from when we were seated. We sat on the porch ( under a speaker) so not sure how chaotic it was inside. After twenty minutes rather than being offered bread/anything to pick on, we flagged our server down to request bread. At the 40 minute mark, my dining companion headed inside to find out what was taking so long. Food did appear, soon thereafter the manager offering to comp our beverages which we appreciated. (Apparently the kitchen had been overwhelmed by the earlier private party we had seen departing.)The lemony shrimp pasta was incredible as was my shrimp BLT. Since it was getting quite late, we passed on dessert.
This was our 4th time at Cru. The food was outstanding as usual. We were excited to have our friend visiting Charleston with us experience Cru.
We plan to eat here every time we're visiting! The sandwiches are fantastic, but we really come back for the Macaroni and Cheese! It's 4 cheeses, creamy and decadent, served in your own dish. We love the crispy cheese on top. Definitely a must order if you love Mac and Cheese!
Don't let the tight quarters fool you. This place is the bomb for lunch in Charleston. Close yet not right on the market, and bursting with imaginative freshness & flavors. Has become our "arrive by lunch time to go to Cru Cafe" spot when we plan our itinerary for this amazing city!
Go outside your comfort zone on the menu and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Awesome food! Best fried green tomato appetizer!
Everyone loved it!
Hidden gem. Great food.
Sat at chef’s table over looking kitchen it was fun to watch food being prepared. Cozy atmosphere.
Would go again
Our reservation was @ 1:15, and we had to wait for a while to be seated. @ 2:15, we still did not have our food. They need to spend the time and money to freshen it up, paint would be a big help. it looks tired and dated.
Again it was just what I was looking for as it was an energetic mid day business lunch
Whether it's lunch or dinner, we love the Cru Cafe and have ever since it opened more
than fifteen years ago. The food is terrific and the service and ambiance is casual and
