Craigie on Main Ratings and Reviews
We were seated at a small two top right across from the kitchen entry. The tables are extremely close together so you feel cramped in and that fact, combined with a view of severs running in and out of the kitchen, didn’t feel great when spending $150+ per person. The food itself was good, but generally salty and a little under-seasoned. The octopus, which came highly recommended by our server, was bland. The pasta was average. The entrees, pork and chicken, were very good. The pork rib was succulent and the chicken was flavorful and very moist. The chocolate finish was bland.
This place is known to be one of the best in the Boston area and has been for a long time. They have the best burger in town, for sure. When I went for dinner (not a burger) I enjoyed my meal, but wasn't blown away. They did take good care of me as someone with some special dietary needs and luckily I was able to eat many of the menu items without any modifications to them. The thing that stood out the most was the cocktail I ordered - their version of an old fashioned - delicious!
Dined in the bar, a great choice table with view of entire restaurant and bar--perfect vantage point. Food outstanding, drinks and wine also excellent, and excellent service with knowledgeable wait staff. All one could ask for--timing was impeccable on food delivery.
Our party of three found our meal at Craigie on Main a wonderful experience beginning to end. Wait staff were attentive and well-informed. The cocktails were interesting blends ands flavors. The food was innovative and perfectly prepared. The octopus, for example was the tenderest and most well-seasoned we have ever encountered, as were the oysters. The Hake entree with its accompanying sauces and vegetables and the lamb as well were excellent. Desserts such as the panacotta ended a memorable meal.
Our family often chooses Craigie on Main for special meals, or just when we get together.
The food is the best on Boston. The burger cannot be beat. The tasting menu is also outstanding, so worth the price.
We do eat out often in Boston, often in the South End, but Craigie on Main is our favorite restaurant by far.
The food at Craigie on Main is fresh and delicious. My fiancee and I ordered the five course meal. We loved being surprised, and each course was unique and tasty. My fiancee has some dietary restrictions, so we each received a different option for each course. Fun! And the servers and chefs were very personable and accommodating to our tastes.
Craigie on Main is a pretty expensive restaurant (especially if you add cocktails), and we likely cannot afford to go back any time soon, but it's a great place to splurge for a special occasion.
I ordered a burger, which was excellent and lived up to their reputation. Was served rare though and I ordered medium rare. The server handled it well and explained this is how they come out given the quality of the beef (which was excellent). I also ordered an Old Fashioned and was overly sweet. (yes, I'm picky about them but given their reputation for craft cocktails, I would have expected better).
The service was excellent. Loved that they offered to take our coats as we came in and left my leftover bag at the host station.
All in all a good experience and I'll definitely return but my experience was not quite up to their reputation.
We went for my wife's birthday dinner with my two kids (ages 10 and 8) and my father-in-law. We love that the restaurant strives for local and organic ingredients as we eat that way at home. Service was fantastic and food was phenomenal. My 10-year old son actually ordered the tasting menu and ate everything that was put in front of him! They actually brought him an extra course too, we'd like to think the kitchen staff were watching him to see what else he'd eat!
Excellent, warm service
We sat at the bar for brunch and enjoyed watching the kitchen staff in action. Great food, well presented, staff easy to talk to and super friendly.
Only suggestion for improvement is an expansion of the brunch food and drink menu with more selections
My wife and I had a good time at Craigie. The restaurant was nice, albeit on the small side, but seating was comfortable. Good on ambiance, but noise level is a bit high for my liking. Service was excellent. With reservations, we did not wait at all for a table on a Fri night. Food was very good overall. We had the octopus and oyster starters, both good. The hake main course was excellent as well. That said, the great food does not justify the high prices. I expected more tbh.
My favorite place to eat and it's worth the cost. Restaurant has a great warm feel, noise is at a healthy level, music (seemed like a lot of Miles Davis the night we just went to) is at just the right volume and the food is just great. You always felt like you ate something special. Staff is friendly and really helpful.
A few quibbles:
-Most recent appetizer list is pretty limited and i wish they'd bring back the pig tails
-I think the wine list outsmarts itself and is more difficult than it needs to be. It took us a little effort to get where we wanted to go.
We went for my husband's birthday and ended up sitting at the bar so that he could get the burger. So I think the fact that I put in our reservation that it was his birthday got lost, but he was more than ok with that since he was so happy to have gotten the infamous burger. The food was outstanding!! We've always loved octopus so we got that as an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly. The service was great as well; Ben the bartender was phenomenal and really helped make our experience enjoyable. We will be going back, and highly recommend it here
We tried the tasting menu. The upside? They were very flexible with my companion’s food preferences. The downside? The plates ranged from ok (dessert) to great (lamb) but were not as artfully arranged as I have seen. Also, the side sauces seemed a bit weak and did not enhance the main ingredient on the plate. I noticed many people were ordering burgers so that’s what I will try next time I go.
Overall we loved Craigie. The food was amazing and the service was even better. The cocktails are as good as any I've had anywhere and the bartender was great. he ran his bar with friendly efficiency, personality and some great creativity and advice.
My one complaint was the wine list. It was limited, which I appreciate actually. A chef knows what works well with their food and there is no reason to have 100 wines. That said, the average price for a bottle was over $100 and that's just silly. There are amazing wines at more affordable rates and so I ended up feeling taken advantage of. The couple at the next table commented on it as well and I think this is a real weak point in their menu, service and overall appeal. It is just way out of balance.
Craigie is not an inexpensive experience, and to double down on the wine would keep me from going there more often.
Craigie on Main has it all, creative, delicious food and top notch service. The employees at Craigie work like a well oiled machine and everyone who tends to you during your visit is the best at what they do.
My husband and I visited to celebrate my birthday and we both had the Chef's 5 course tasting menu. There was a little bit of everything, fish, veggies, meat, pasta, and everything from first nibble to the dessert at the end was perfection. Such a wonderful experience!
Fantastic meal at Craigie on Main! The service was fantastic from start to finish, attentive and charming staff. We had the 5-course tasting menu and the staff were extremely conscientious about giving me a pregnancy-friendly menu and my husband a vegetarian one. Every dish was carefully prepared, beautiful, and delicious. We felt it was a truly special meal for a reasonable price. We wouldn't hesitate to come back to celebrate an occasion or just enjoy a special night out.
It was for my boyfriends birthday and I had put that in the reservation. All staff we came in contact with wished Brian a happy birthday. They gave us a card from the owner and at the end brought us out a complimentary glass of processco each to go with the most delicious dessert we ordered. The burger was absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend it! Additionally our waiter was great. He had the bartender make me a drink with whiskey in it as he didn't think I'd like what was on the menu. Will definitely return again! I really want to try the regular menu next time :-) thank you again for a wonderful experience
I've been to Craigie on Main several times. The food has always been stellar (just like the service.) This time, we sat at the bar and I ordered a vegetarian option (a silly choice, according to my husband, as I am NOT a vegetarian - it just sounded good. ) It wasn't. Other than that, the service was amiable but not exceptional. I was a little disappointed by the whole thing. I think I will wait a while before coming back.
