Craigie on Main Ratings and Reviews
The food was imaginative and tasty, the hostess was rather abrupt and rude and instructed us to stand on a little ramp since we were early for our reservation. When a spot at the bar opened and we moved our selves there, she seemed annoyed. It was not a very friendly welcome. Service at the table was a mixture of good to inattentive.
One of the best burgers I've ever had in my life. Definitely the most special burger I've ever had.
My one qualm would be that it was just a bit too salty - the potato wedges too.
I am enticed to try something from the actual menu next time I come, but it'll be hard to resist not getting that burger again.
Service was really great. Waiters were fast and attentive.
We had a decent dinner at Craigie on Main, but it was, simply, not worth the cost. When I order a whole chicken for two, I expect it both to be a high-quality chicken (which is was) and cooked to a level that I could not do at home (which it was not). it was good, don't get me wrong, but it was not great. The skin was not crisp, due to the heavy marinade or rub, and it was not fully cooked through (the areas near the thigh joints were undercooked. Not too bad in a $20 entree, unforgivable in a signature $70 chicken for two.
The Becker riesling almost made up for it though.
We were seated at a small two top right across from the kitchen entry. The tables are extremely close together so you feel cramped in and that fact, combined with a view of severs running in and out of the kitchen, didn’t feel great when spending $150+ per person. The food itself was good, but generally salty and a little under-seasoned. The octopus, which came highly recommended by our server, was bland. The pasta was average. The entrees, pork and chicken, were very good. The pork rib was succulent and the chicken was flavorful and very moist. The chocolate finish was bland.
Came for the burger but unfortunately they had run out 9 minutes after opening. The overall menu is definitely pricey, and while the food was delicious, not everything was 'blow your mind' good in a way that would justify the price. They start you off with small bites which is a nice touch. The octupus was great and our favorite item-- loved the complex flavors that came together on the plate. The pork was very good, but not something that I'd run around town recommending as something that others NEED to try. The brussel sprouts honestly left something to be desired. Servers were very attentive and atmosphere was relatively quiet and refined. I would say that this is a great place to go if you are fine with having expensive meals casually-- for a special occasion, you could probably find a better spot.
This place is known to be one of the best in the Boston area and has been for a long time. They have the best burger in town, for sure. When I went for dinner (not a burger) I enjoyed my meal, but wasn't blown away. They did take good care of me as someone with some special dietary needs and luckily I was able to eat many of the menu items without any modifications to them. The thing that stood out the most was the cocktail I ordered - their version of an old fashioned - delicious!
Mixture of good and just ok, so probably wouldn’t go back for the price. Hosts - great! Server - kind of unmotivated and just there. When we asked her for most popular items I thought she’d say definitely go for the tasting menu (seeing other reviews on here), but she just suggested some dishes which supposedly were the most popular. Oysters - perfect! Octopus - overcooked way too soft, kind of bland.. Three-way pork dish - you get 3 different fatty pieces of pork in the same sauce..wasn’t a fan! The steak dish was good. The autumn carrot cake was delish and along with the oysters probably the two best dishes of the dinner!
Dined in the bar, a great choice table with view of entire restaurant and bar--perfect vantage point. Food outstanding, drinks and wine also excellent, and excellent service with knowledgeable wait staff. All one could ask for--timing was impeccable on food delivery.
Our party of three found our meal at Craigie on Main a wonderful experience beginning to end. Wait staff were attentive and well-informed. The cocktails were interesting blends ands flavors. The food was innovative and perfectly prepared. The octopus, for example was the tenderest and most well-seasoned we have ever encountered, as were the oysters. The Hake entree with its accompanying sauces and vegetables and the lamb as well were excellent. Desserts such as the panacotta ended a memorable meal.
Our family often chooses Craigie on Main for special meals, or just when we get together.
The food is the best on Boston. The burger cannot be beat. The tasting menu is also outstanding, so worth the price.
We do eat out often in Boston, often in the South End, but Craigie on Main is our favorite restaurant by far.
The food at Craigie on Main is fresh and delicious. My fiancee and I ordered the five course meal. We loved being surprised, and each course was unique and tasty. My fiancee has some dietary restrictions, so we each received a different option for each course. Fun! And the servers and chefs were very personable and accommodating to our tastes.
Craigie on Main is a pretty expensive restaurant (especially if you add cocktails), and we likely cannot afford to go back any time soon, but it's a great place to splurge for a special occasion.
I ordered a burger, which was excellent and lived up to their reputation. Was served rare though and I ordered medium rare. The server handled it well and explained this is how they come out given the quality of the beef (which was excellent). I also ordered an Old Fashioned and was overly sweet. (yes, I'm picky about them but given their reputation for craft cocktails, I would have expected better).
The service was excellent. Loved that they offered to take our coats as we came in and left my leftover bag at the host station.
All in all a good experience and I'll definitely return but my experience was not quite up to their reputation.
We went for my wife's birthday dinner with my two kids (ages 10 and 8) and my father-in-law. We love that the restaurant strives for local and organic ingredients as we eat that way at home. Service was fantastic and food was phenomenal. My 10-year old son actually ordered the tasting menu and ate everything that was put in front of him! They actually brought him an extra course too, we'd like to think the kitchen staff were watching him to see what else he'd eat!
Excellent, warm service
We sat at the bar for brunch and enjoyed watching the kitchen staff in action. Great food, well presented, staff easy to talk to and super friendly.
Only suggestion for improvement is an expansion of the brunch food and drink menu with more selections
My wife and I had a good time at Craigie. The restaurant was nice, albeit on the small side, but seating was comfortable. Good on ambiance, but noise level is a bit high for my liking. Service was excellent. With reservations, we did not wait at all for a table on a Fri night. Food was very good overall. We had the octopus and oyster starters, both good. The hake main course was excellent as well. That said, the great food does not justify the high prices. I expected more tbh.
My favorite place to eat and it's worth the cost. Restaurant has a great warm feel, noise is at a healthy level, music (seemed like a lot of Miles Davis the night we just went to) is at just the right volume and the food is just great. You always felt like you ate something special. Staff is friendly and really helpful.
A few quibbles:
-Most recent appetizer list is pretty limited and i wish they'd bring back the pig tails
-I think the wine list outsmarts itself and is more difficult than it needs to be. It took us a little effort to get where we wanted to go.
We went for my husband's birthday and ended up sitting at the bar so that he could get the burger. So I think the fact that I put in our reservation that it was his birthday got lost, but he was more than ok with that since he was so happy to have gotten the infamous burger. The food was outstanding!! We've always loved octopus so we got that as an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly. The service was great as well; Ben the bartender was phenomenal and really helped make our experience enjoyable. We will be going back, and highly recommend it here
