Crab Hut Ratings and Reviews
We are from the Bay Area so it was great to find something in San Diego that reminds us of Boiling Crab. I really like what they had to offer and the tastes were uniquely there's. The sauce was a little sweet but had lots of garlic which I liked. There was meaty crab in the snow legs and sausages were not too spicy. Good flavor and they have different tvs that were playing the different basketball games happening that night. Good find in Downtown and left us feeling good.
Really good boil, but wish the crawfish were bigger. These bugs were really small and the meat wouldn't pull off the tail easily. I prefer the Cajun boil over the Full House. Shrimp were large and fantastic!
Although disappointed with the size of crawfish, I'd definitely eat there again. Great atmosphere and friendly staff!
Our server was great. Very attentive but not intrusive. Food was decent. We ordered the Sampler Boat which is a LARGE basket of fried shrimp, fish, calamari, fries and okra. All the seafood was seriously overcooked. Also order the Spicy Jambalaya. It is spicy and the shrimp was done just right. But the rice was overcooked and mushy.
My husband and I were staying at the US Grant and this place was down the street. I made reservations for 12:30pm because opening tends to be slow and we had our 3 month old daughter with us so we needed space for her stroller.
We were 30mins early, but the host was okie with that since the restaurant was empty except for another group with a baby. Audrey was our waitress and she was nice enough to advise us to hold off on ordering the jambalaya--what we ordered was more than enough for 2 people. The sampler boat was huge and we loved everything in it. The only downside was that they put tons of fried okras (which my husband didn't like) and not enough of everything else. I think it was 30 pieces of these tiny fried okras to 3 shrimps, and a handful of onion rings, tiny fried fish, waffle fries, and the rest. The shrimp and crawfish mix with the Full House was delicious. I loved the sauce that I ended up dipping our friend food into it.
The waitress was attentive enough; she dropped by twice to check up on us.
Overall, the food is good, the value is right, the service is nice, & they had a changing table in the bathroom (I definitely appreciated this since I had to change my daughter). We definitely will be back when we're in town.
There was a little confusion between LAST SEATING and LAST CALL time, the website said Last seating is at 9:30 as they close as 10:00pm, but got a call from them saying last call is 9:30 so if we got there right at 9:30 we would of miss last call. But at the end we got in and able to put our orders in the neck of time. Food was amazing, the service was good. We all enjoyed our dinner there.
So I saw a 1st time "date" while we were dining. BAD IDEA unless y'all ready to be down and dirty. This is not a cutesy sport...
Have cool HH deals. Regular price have went up 2x in the past year. You could go to ANY of the "crab-insert name" spots and get the same food. This is original, so others really are 2nd nature duplicates. Glad our server told us we could "split" flavors/items in our bag to save us $$ cause the prices are really ridiculous compared to what is offered at other crab "insert the name" spots...
Great happy hour specials! Our server Monica was awesome! We had oysters, wings, sausage sliders, and crab bites. The crab bites were pretty unimpressive, basically fried frozen product. The oysters were only $1 each. We had 4 dozen, 2 dozen each or two different West coast varieties. The wings were good but they don't have blue cheese so we suffered with the ranch:)
The draft beers are $3 and the selection is good. They also have $6 cocktails and other specials. This place was a total score.
My husband had been dying to try a restaurant where he could wear a bib and eat a whole crab, and that is exactly what we got from Crab Hut. It was a really fun experience to share with friends, and there was a lot of laughter. This had to be one of the messiest experiences I've ever had, but it was pretty much what we signed up for. The service was excellent. The staff (especially our waiter, Danny) was very helpful, especially as we were novices with this kind of experience, and they were patient and very informative. It was especially exciting to get to "meet" our dinner before they got cooked. My husband was like a kid in the candy store. We could not have asked for a better experience. The only surprise was how expensive this experience is, considering the incredibly casual atmosphere. We probably won't do something like this again for years, but we are very glad had this fantastic experience!
As first timers, we had an awesome time celebrating my daughters baptism at this place because we got to enjoy family company and the delicious food! Also the drink that had mezcal in it was to die for delicious😋 (Forgot the name.) Corking per bottle is also a reasonable price ($15 p/bottle). Definitely recommend Crab Hut to anyone that wants to try their amazing crab + shrimp!
