The food was good, but not worth the price. The staff was friendly. After dinner I noticed a couple of ants crawling on the table.

Excellent food. Beautiful area. Wine by the glass is way overpriced!! One can get the same at restaurants that are less upscale. I would have to warn friends about that.

My last visit to the Crab Catcher was amazing however this visit not so much. We arrived for my mother’s birthday and could not wait to order. I suggested the cioppino to both my mother and father since it was delicious the last time I had it. I asked about the fish of the day and was told it was Wahoo and decided to go with the crab stuffed fish and my husband had the braised beef short ribs. In addition, we ordered the roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts for the table which came highly recommended by the waiter.

The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The cioppino looked mouth watering as well as my husband’s braised beef looked tender and juicy. My dish on the other hand looked pale and unappetizing; there was no color to the fish and it was as bland tasting as it looked.

The cioppino looked good and I decided to give it a taste. I tried the shrimp first which was over cooked then I tried to crack the crab with the nut cracker and it would not break. The only thing the crab would do it bend. I next tried the mussels which were flavorful and fresh tasting.

Next I sampled the roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts with bacon, shallots and parmesan which by all means should be tasty…not true. The first bite of cauliflower I put in my mouth was undercooked and still cold in the center. The waiter had to take it back and reheat it in the oven… I’m not a fan of how it was prepared.

I think the hit of the night was my husband’s braised beef which is unfortunate since this is a predominately seafood restaurant. I didn’t understand the mixed reviews at first however I must agree with the masses. This is not a place for me to spend $200 on a mediocre meal. Definitely a last visit!

The wait staff, and especially Patrick, are outstanding. Sunday brunch is the best. I’ve been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. It’s my go to restaurant for special occasions or to treat out of town visitors.

Big Disappointment. The food was average and the service was slow. There are a lot of great restaurants in La Jolla. Pick one of those and skip the Crab Catcher.

Glad you asked. We have been going to Crab Catcher for over 20 years. This is the first time
we were sorely disappointed!
I go for the Red King Crab. Sometimes my wife likes the kitchen to remove the crab from the shell which they gladly do. She has some finger pain.
The Crab meal at $69 is shown on the menu as 1-1/4 lbs of crab, that's 20 ounces.
If you say the shell weighs 8 ounces, doubtful, I should have received 10 to 12 ounces of crabmeat. What I actually received was less than 5 ounces! I mentioned it to the waitress and she just shrugged.
To add insult to injury, the corkage fee was an outrageous $25. We won't be going back.

It would have been nicer if Open Table's request was honored.

We were looking for a great sea food restaurant, unfortunately this did not measure up. The food is way over priced and did not even seem fresh. My wife got tiger prawns and got 4 on pasta, I went for the crab meat stuffed fish ( was told it was fresh local today) and was over cooked. Crab cake we ordered was just average. Everything was presented well, very nice service, but just way over priced, which I would happily paid if the food matched

My 88 year old mother and I go to The Crab Catcher every time we are in La Jolla. We love the view, the food, and the service. We always enjoy our meal and the wine we order. For some reason, wine always tastes better at The Crab Catcher! We always follow our meal with a cup of coffee and share Crème Brulee for dessert! Our visits to the Crab Catcher are very special to us.

Fortunately we had the best seat in the house overlooking the cove and I would rate our table a 5 out of 5. Our service was also very good. The food was OK but overpriced. The best item on the menu was the $1 oyster shooters. In all, not a bad experience, but for the price I expected to be "Wowed".

First time visiting La Jolla - layout, views and menu selection was extraordinary.
Im not a fan of sour dough bread personally, but cannot fault the establishment for that - bread was warm, butter was creamy and the crab cakes were phenomenal. First time having cioppino -do yourself a favor pass on the app and sides (not because they aren't deelish) but bc the serving of "stew" is GENEROUS! Other option share w other patrons at your table. Drinks were thoughtful - My husband raved about the coconut crush and I had a tropical fizz (champagne, guava & pineapple juice) . Was too full for dessert but great selection. It was such a romantic dinner and money well spent .

We didn't particularly need a reservation for a wednesday evening in October , however if you want to "secure" a great view of the beach, consider calling/booking ahead.

The CrabCatcher is a La Jolla favorite for seafood and fine dining that I have enjoyed several times. Indoor and patio dining are available along with exceptional service and quality sea food. We had the mussels as an appetizer and the dinner for two, Maine Lobster, Bering Sea Red King Crab Legs & Grilled Prawns. Everything was prepared perfectly. I would highly recommend the CrabCatcher for anyone looking for great sea food.

The setting is lovely, right by the water in La Jolla and the service was good. The crab cakes were mediocre at best, but the cauliflower/brussel sprout appetizer and the fish and chips were good. It was nice, but I would go back to George’s at the Cove before returning here.

The service was excellent. We brought our own wine and the server was kind and accommodated us. We had a view of the coastline. It was quiet. We all enjoyed our entre selections. Finding the restaurant was a bit difficult but we parked where we were instructed to park and wound our way to the restaurant.

OK menu, decent food, pricey, not as much ocean view as you'd get in other nicer restaurants on the same street, horribly outdated interior and atmosphere. Feels like it was redecorated in '04 with a partial upgrade from the 90's. If you're looking for oysters at the 'oyster bar' know that they only carry two types.

Repeat visit. Excellent crab, great service. The crab legs are spectacular here - the best anywhere. Pre-cracked, large, meaty. The service was excellent. BEWARE if you make reservations however. They just do not get it. I made reservations through open table for a window seat and when we arrived, she stated that there were none. (Isn't that the point for a reservation?) So it seems to be first come, first serve. Luckily a table opened up that we wanted.

We celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary in style while visiting from Northern Virginia. After a champagne toast and light snack at Happy Hour, we strolled down the hill along La Jolla Cove and watched the seals and sea lions on Seal Rock. Upon our return for dinner, we were given the best window seat in the restaurant with a magnificent view of La Jolla waterside. We went all in and ordered the Shellfish Experience for Two: 1.5 lbs. Maine Lobster, 1.5 lbs. Bering Sea Red King Crab Legs & four Grilled Prawns with roasted potatoes and vegetables and local Ballast Point Sculpin draft beers. The King Crab Legs and Grilled Prawns were perfectly cooked; the lobster was above average, but we have high lobster standards as we visit Maine every Summer. After all of that, we were surprised with a delicious complimentary desert: a large slice of Paradise Pie (description from the menu: Macadamia nut ice cream pie with a chocolate cookie crust topped with warm chocolate sauce, whipped cream and crushed macadamia nuts). All in all, a terrific evening at Crab Catcher with outstanding service from Alberto. We hope to return in the future on a clear evening to enjoy the La Jolla sunset, as a low bank of clouds precluded that experience.

To say the good was disappointing would be an understatement. The oysters we got ordered came out lukewarm, not chilled at all. The crab cake was alright but you could tell from the sauce on the plate it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The ciopinno was horrible. The seafood all tasted frozen and the crab leg on it was so over cooked and dry I couldn't even eat it. The steak wasn't fresh and the potatoes tasted instant. One of the biggest wastes of $300 I've ever spent on a meal. Our server was nice but couldn't make up for the horrible food.
