Cowboy Ciao Ratings and Reviews
Cowboy Ciao is known for its chopped salad. I found it a bit bland for my taste buds. Having conversation with friends is literally impossible because the noise level was deafening. CC had come highly recommended, and I will recommend it, but I’m in no hurry to return.
We had been referred to Cowboy Ciao by a friend in Dallas. I had the mushroom “pan fry” which consisted of a great variety of different types of mushrooms over two polenta cakes drowned (swimming actually) in a bland cream sauce. The mushrooms were very good; but the polenta cakes and quantity of bland cream sauce killed the dish. My wife had the brisket sandwich - brisket great; but, the overall sandwich was soggy and the carmelized onions overpowered the dish.
Not a giant menu but choices of all kinds from soups, salads, and of course some very interesting taste options. I did the exotic mushroom fry with polenta- excellent variety and textures. It run of the mill wines by the glass. Fast service and plenty of quantity. Definite recc for lunch!
We were in for vacation. Very hip and happening restaurant. Priced well and we enjoyed the vibe. Only downside was not being acknowledged at the bar while were waiting. We took the last two stools and the three bartenders seemed too busy to notice. We were seating before they could have made drinks but a head nod or hello would have been nice.
Hoping to celebrate a special occasion we ended up being disappointed with the experience, especially considering all of the hype on Yelp etc.
Service was poor and food was mediocre. Our waiter was a very sweet and friendly man but we are guessing that he was filling in as a temp. Service was slow and we had to ask repeatedly for everything that we might need (silverware?) with many apologies. He had no knowledge of the wine list - I had to request 4 different wines with a trip to the kitchen for each one to find out if it was available before we finally hit on a higher priced bottle that was available. No help with recommendations. We were served food meant for the table next to us. Finally he just disappeared. Salads and appetizers were good. Main courses were all underrated - special beef shanks were charred black, polenta with mushrooms was rubbery, salmon was dry. Not a vegetable in sight and none listed ala carte either. Bill came out really high compared to the quality of the food and service. I'd go again only to sit at the bar and have a drink and small plates for a casual meal.
First of all - we've walked by Cowboy Ciao so many times and it is always packed. I told my husband that next time we were in Scottsdale that we were eating there. And so we did. Mary Anne was our waitress and was amazing in her recommendations. I had the Stetson Chopped salad and my husband had the Pastrami-Style Short Rib. Both were excellent! We also had the bread pudding and the blonde bombshell. Oh my gosh - I will dream of this meal forever. Delicious and awesome experience.
This place is a joke! They boast a wine list of 2000 wines, but try to order one. We have been coming here for 14 years and have never been able to get our first choice of wine. On this visit, our first choice was a bottle that was also available by the glass. Our server said she couldn’t sell us a bottle, because they didn’t have enough, and had to save it for single glass servings. What? Why is it on the bottle menu then? Also if you are selling this by the glass I would assume that you have many bottles in stock. So we continued our selection process. And on the 5th try we finally got a bottle. Every time we chose a bottle, the server had to go look for it, while we had to wait for her to come back, only to tell us it was out of stock. Each time she suggested another wine at a much higher price. Had she offered us her selection at the price of our preferred choice, we would have taken it. The entire wine selection process from our initial request to actually getting the bottle took 40 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous! They don’t know what they have in stock, and can’t find what they do have in a timely manner. I asked our server if they use a computer to track the inventory and locations and she said the owner doesn’t do that because it is too difficult. The owner here is obviously clueless. They filed for Chapter 11 earlier this year, and that does not surprise me. The quality of the food has suffered too. They are probably trying to save money to pay the creditors. My prediction is that they will close down soon. What was once one of our favorites is now a place we will never return too. Stay away, you will only be disappointed.
We are from San Diego, but always make a point to visit your restaurant every time we are in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. It is not only one of our favorite restaurants in Phoenix, it is one of our favorites, period.
Our server was a doll; very personable and professional. She made us feel very relaxed and welcome.
Sorry I was not impressed. Chop salad was wonderful - if you go be sure to get the chop salad that they mix at the table. The signature mushroom dish was a bust. Total lack of flavor - blah - I kept adding salt and it did not improve the flavor. I don’t recommend going here - not sure what all the hype is about. DISAPPOINTED!!!
We used to love this place but our most recent experience wasn't great. We made a reservation but I felt like they wished we didn't show up. It was a later reservation but clearly during their serving hours. We felt almost unwelcome. The food was not as good as last time either. Worst of all it seemed like the ventilation system wasn't working so we smelled of cooking smoke and grease after we left.
Our experience at Cowboy Ciao exceeded our expectations! We were celebrating our 25th anniversary and couldn't have picked a more perfect place. Mark our waiter was outstanding. He was engaging but sensitive about our personal celebration. It's definitely a place we will come back to.
This place is amazing. I want to fill a bathtub with their Stetson Chopped salad and eat my way out of it. The short rib dinner was delicious. Our waitress was super nice and gave us complimentary shots because my friend and I were celebrating new jobs. 10/10 would recommend.
