Costa Brava Ratings and Reviews
One of the worst dining experiences we have had in St Augustine. It was our anniversary and I had requested a romantic table or the best - which they tried to accommodate but there really wasn’t one. The couple seated behind us were very drunk, using profanity loudly which, that’s fine because they were happy, but I figured at this establishment it would have been handled. I had to ask for bread and water just because it had been about an hour of waiting. The food was mediocre at best. Which was surprising since it was a $36 sea bass. It also seemed the waiter forgot about us. We ended up going through old photos and reminiscing on our year together. We ended up talking to guest services and all she could say was sorry, which I’m sure she didn’t know what to do. It would have been nice to have a manager speak to us or to take our name and number. I’m so bummed because I had waited years to eat here as I live downtown and it happened to leave a very bad taste in my mouth. Pun intended. Maybe it was an off night for the restaurant.
On New Year's Eve, you know that all restaurants will be full and a bit chaotic. I don't mind paying extra -- but $125 was too much for what was delivered. The food was below par. Soup lukewarm, appetizers tiny...reminded me of a so-so catered banquet meal. Service was rushed and impersonal. The entertainment was too loud - thank heavens we were a distance away. Next year - need to make plans earlier to have more options. This will not be one I would consider.
We were there for NYE and it was a prix fixed menu. Everything was very good, but they got the temp of my steak wrong twice. They were quick to replace it and offered to accommodate with extras. Atmosphere was perfect for us and the waitress was calm and attentive.
I've been going to this hotel and restaurant for years, and something must have happened. The dining room used to be great, especially when they changed the menu a year or two ago and brought in a great chef. Recently they changed it up again and not for the better. It's unfortunate and I hope they get back to where they used to be - both in quality of food, menu options and service.
Really too bad but this place was the worst of our meals during our 3 day stay. Service was slow for all tables. They said they were hit all at once but I did not see evidence of that. The bar was super busy which seems like a separate portion of the hotel. Everyone looked really annoyed. Seemed like they were short staffed. The good, I had the seabass was fine. Portion was a tad small but good flavor. I did, as one will, a huge palmetto that ran under one of the pole supports in the middle of the room. Didn’t sit well.
4 of us decided to attend the Downton Abbey clothing show at the Lightner museum. Costa Brava is right across the street with convenient hotel parking. Costa Brava's menu was delightfully eclectic and our food turned out to be very good. Unfortunately, it took a long while to get to us. I don't think it was the waitress. She was attentive and pleasant. It appeared to be more the kitchen. The whole place didn't seem prepared for customers; one waitress, no one to greet or seat us. Frankly it was very strange as the town was busy as it seemed was the hotel.
We picked this Casa Monica hotel restaurant only because it was open on Christmas Day and the other restaurants that had been recommended were not. Fortunately we made a reservation because it was packed. We were not told in advance it was a $69 prefix menu, so that was a surprise. It was mostly tasty, service was slow but polite, not the best $225 we’ve spent on a meal as a couple.
Overall, very disappointing. We went knowing that there was a fixed Christmas menu, which looked very good. The food was well-prepared and presented, but the only note-worthy dish was the pan seared sea bass. The appetizer was one shrimp and one oyster. The crab bisque, which came out quite awhile later, was good, but not outstanding. The sea bass was perfectly delicious, but quite small (about 3 or 4 ounces) the herbed risotto was very bland. The Buche de Noel was quite good, not too sweet or too rich. Our server was excellent. He was personable and attentive and had a very professional demeanor. However, service was VERY SLOW and not our server's fault. We were seated at about 7:00 pm and by 8:15 we had had only two courses. Dinner was not worth the $200 we paid. By the way, whatever happened to dress codes? If one can afford to eat at Costa Brava, then one can afford to leave the holey jeans and camo cargo shorts in the closet and choose something more suitable.
I went there for the Christmas dinner.
The atmosphere was very nice, but the food was not the best. I had the sea bass, which did not taste fresh and was really fishy. The portions were extremely small for the price. I left hungry after 4 courses and I'm tiny.
The woman working at the front desk was very friendly, helpful and welcoming.
We had a Christmas eve dinner, so it wasnt a very fair time to review it. They had a special evening meal and a VERY crowded resturant. They made their reservation time commitment, but service was slow between courses.......like 20 minutes between each course. The food however almost made up for the extended wait times between courses. Everything was delicious. We will definately return to St Augustine and we will definately try this resturant again.
Service was terrible and slow especially considering it was a prefix menu at $70 per person. We were first to be sat at opening and still took 2 1/2 hours to finish meal. Took about 30 minutes to get drinks. 45 minutes to get kids meal which was kraft Mac and cheese which they tried to charge us $12 each for and gave no first or third course like menu said. When I questioned why I was being charged $24 for two Kraft Mac and cheeses the server got smart with me. The menu said kids 6-11 were $24. My kids were 2 & 4 and didn’t get appetizers or desserts. Then when the bill came it didn’t include gratuity but after everyone paid 20% gratuity got put on there. No wonder the server didn’t care the whole time we were there. Food was mediocre for how nice of a restaurant it seemed to be. Ambiance was great, food and prices not worth what we paid at all. Will never return or recommend. Management definitely needs to have top servers on flood especially for what we paid on a special occasion, Christmas Eve.
Waited over an hour for appetizers. Upon reminding them that we had appetizers they suddenly were found about 15 minutes later. Entrée was served approximately 20 minutes after that. We’re not that busy at that time of night but I have the feeling that I had not brought it to their attention I will still be sitting there waiting for my dinner.
Took my daughter to dinner, expecting a five star experience. We have stayed at the Casa Monica many, many times and it has always been great . First thing I noticed when we were seated was the table next to us - the people were dressed as if they were at Denny’s !! The woman had some sort of dress ?? And the man had on Jeans and sneakers !!!! Really !!! To pay close to 200.00 for dinner for two , I don’t want to see Denny’s people . What happened to the dress code ??? If the restaurant is so desperate for guests , perhaps offer hot dogs on the menu . On the up side , our server was awesome and very knowledgeable - atmosphere was great as well ( just as it always has been ) . I recommend putting the dress code back in place !!!!!! The Casa Monica used to be one of few places to really have a classy night out .... very disappointed. Tell Richard he has to do a better job .
This restaurant should be at the bottom of the list in St. Augustine’s best. My wife and I chose this spot for my birthday dinner and it was nothing short of terrible. Apparently there is a miscommunication between the restaurant and valet as people are being sent to them but it is not available so you have to find alternate parking three blocks away. The restaurant was not overly crowded at this time, yet we found the wait staff and managers are slow and inattentive. The waiter recommended the Costa Churrasco or the grilled lamb, my wife and I ordered them based on his recommendation with sides of creamed spinach and olives with artichoke hearts. The meats were to be prepared medium rare. It seemed like we waited quite a while for our food, and Tables sat after us were already receiving their food. Not once did our server fill our drinks, or let us know the status of our food. It finally arrived and was plated nicely. Cutting into our lamb(a favorite of ours) it was over cooked and tough. We were not asked how our meal was or given a chance to correct it. Several managers passed us constantly, but seemed more interested in playing with their radios and ear pieces. At the end of the night, the waiter looked down at the untouched lamb on both plates and asked “do you want a box and did you save room for dessert?” This was extremely disconcerting as server in a restaurant of this caliber should have picked up on the fact that there was a problem. We declined both and he handed us a check. We payed the bill, tip and parking which put us at just under $200 for a throughly disappointing birthday experience. With numerous, high quality options in the same price range well within walking distance of the hotel, I would not take a chance on them again.
Will not return! So many great restaurants in this city that are fabulous no need to go back! Personally talked to manager he has no clue of how to run a great restaurant! The right chief and manager with experience in this beautiful building would do great in St. Augustine, FL. Open table should take this location off there list, I am dropping out of Open Table! 1st excperience & last!
The food was great. I made the reservation with a note asking for a quiet table as it was for my wife's birthday. When we were seated, we were asked by the hostess if there was a special occasion, which was disappointing, but not a big issue. Then the waiter never mentioned the Birthday at all. Also, the service was extremely slow and he never filled our water glasses. Really, very poor service given the quality of the hotel and the food. I would recommend it, but with some reservations. We have dined here before, and the service is spotty at best.
Save your money and dine 2 or 3 times at other area restaurants for the same cost.
Bottom line: Very expensive overall, low quality and poorly executed entrees, and disappointing inattentive service. Considering that Costa Brava is double the cost of other restaurants (Of much better quality) in St Augustine, the ambiance and brand don't begin to make up for these major failings.
We made the mistake of bringing a business partner here and were tremendously embarrassed. Water glasses were empty for 30 minutes and only refilled once, almost an hour after ordered appetizers arrived; two filet mignon ordered medium and medium rare came out 60 minutes after appetizers and were cold and completely raw; fish dishes were bland and unappetizing and vegetables were over-salted and cold.
The manager did offer a concession of a nice bottle of Bordeaux for the party, but needless to say the mood was set, and my business client and I left hungry and disappointed.
Very interesting and attractive space located inside an historic hotel. (we did not stay at the hotel). Food was good, but the menu was somewhat limited. Octopus was recommended, and while it was tasty, it was not as tender as I had expected. My wife loved her fish chowder. Full bar and a very good wine list, but limited offerings by the glass. Very good service provided by a single waiter, and manager stopped by the table to see that everything was satisfactory, which it was. Moderately expensive.
The food quality we received was fair, but the service as horrible. When we asked for a manager, we were greeted with no resolution of concerns or apologizes. Do not waste your money. There are many excellent establishments in the area who do care about customer service.
We joined friends before the winter spectacular and were in a time crunch. We let the server know that we had to leave by 6:45. Our food didn’t arrive until then. I was so hungry that I ate part of my dinner even though it was the worst meal I’ve had in a LONG time. My steak was so gamey and tough. My husbands was just as difficult to cut and his was medium. It didn’t help that we only had a butter knife. When I say the steak was bad, that’s an understatement. It was the worst I have ever had. We would’ve sent it back if we weren’t starving and rushed. If Costa Brava wants to be upscale then it needs to express that vibe through the food. Honestly, we should be reimbursed or issued a credit for hopefully a better experience
Group of ladies of a certain age celebrating over 40 years of friendship, good times together, trips, special programs. We didn't want to be too noisy for other diners so requested an appropriate setting....were put in private dining room off main dining room. Perfect! Lovely meal, service, setting. Another memory made!
