Coquine Ratings and Reviews
I was there for a dinner for two. The cocktails were good. Servers were quite friendly and attentive. We had mussels as appetizer to share. Very fresh and the Pernod cream was to die for! Loved the white bean dip for bread with its signature cumin.
We ordered the grilled pork belly with scallops and tiger shrimps with scallops. Very nicely done: flavourful, pleasing presentation, just a little too salty for our taste. The pork belly was grilled perfectly and I had a crispy puff pastry tart filled with creamy mushroom as a side to my tiger shrimp dish.
For dessert, we had a lemon tart brulee and mixed berries crepe. The tart was a good balance between sweetness and the lemony tanginess. Curiously the mixed berries crepe was filled mostly with the 2 large scoops of vanilla gelato and only a small amount of blueberries. There were a few slices of strawberries on the side. I was expecting more berries. The blueberries had an interesting cinnamon flavour to it, which I liked. The crepe was light and airy.
I noticed the staff was very friendly towards children, which is very nice. Although it was a Thursday night, people kept coming in, proving it's a popular venue.
Overall, very satisfied with the experience and would definitely recommend it to others.
We were given a giftcard here for Christmas from someone who really knows French food - it's their favorite place, and I see why. It's a lovely little gem of a restaurant, definitely will go back! It was quiet with gentle music playing, and we went on a weeknight so there were only a few tables - which meant privacy, romance, and great service. It was perfect. The waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly and recommended an excellent wine, which I fell in love with while munching the delicious house-made baguette (I know it's just bread, but SO GOOD!). Next came the BEST French Onion Soup I have EVER had - it's one of my favorites and I've tried it everywhere (including France and all over Quebec) - this one beats them all. Amazing. I had the duck, which was incredible. My BF had some kind of beef thing which he also said was amazing - we literally were both so into our food we didn't share or talk, which is super rare!! It was such a lovely evening, great food, and a really nice romantic atmosphere. It's a bit pricey (...glad we had the giftcard for sure!) but for a special occasion or romantic night out, totally worth it. Treat yourself, you won't be disappointed.
Overall, the place deserves a 4 out of 5 stars based on:
-Good food selection for those that like French cuisine
-Presentation of dishes and flavourful items
-Friendly service with recommendations or explanation
-Prices are reasonable for French cuisine
-The only downside is the venue is somewhat dated and seating is somewhat cramped
So come for the food and good times, but wouldn't recommend for a romantic date.
We booked Coquine for our 1st wedding anniversary. Noted in the reservation that it was our 1st anniversary, and yet nobody at any point registered that it was a special night for us.
The Pappardelle au Boeuf Bourguignon was delicious, large portion. Tender beef, flavourful sauce, perfect pasta. Côtelette de Porc was a winner by my husband.
My husband was undecided between two wines, and our server brought over a sample of both, which was very helpful.
Delicious molten lava chocolate cake for dessert, even if it was described as "Warm, flourless chocolate torte" on the menu. Deep, dark, delicious chocolate - it does not matter to me if it comes with a liquid centre.
I wish they had acknowledged our anniversary, that's all.
"This is a Monday!" the patron next to me marveled. The Main Dining Room was full at 8:30 PM when we sat down. Mains were superb, and huge. The 3 of us shared a couple Appetizers & each a Main. There was so much food, I packed my Frere Jacque to go. We shared a single dessert, Crepe with Gelato, and it was plenty. The only negative was I had requested (in the Open Table Booking) a Happy Birthday message on the Dessert Plate. But the restaurant checked us in using a Book, and I guess they didn't get the message from the Open Table computer system.
We decided to check it out on Mothers day. At 6:30 the two rooms were packed and noisy. The friendly waited was prompt with the drinks an bread with some dip. The order was taken and it took awhile to arrive. We ordered 2 beet salad, 2 casoulet, grilled salmon and steak frites. When they arrived one of the casoulet was replaced with something else. The server asdured us thet it would be corrected in 8 minutes. It was in 20. Meanwile 3 of us finished our meal. The salmon was very good. The steak came medium rare instead of medium well but was tasty. The casoulets one was left too long in the oven and the duck confit was pretty dry. The late one was better. We went for deserts. The crepes wer great. The creme brûle was average. In general an average experience. We na go there again in a quieter day.
I made reservations for my daughter , her co-worker and Boss.
My daughter and I have been to this restaurant and have been extremely happy ..... Until this last visit.
My daughter ordered (and was looking forward) to the black pasta with fish. The waiter brought her plain linguini . Because her Boss was there she was embarrassed to complain . However, upon leaving my daughter whispered to the waiter " I thought I ordered the black linguini". The waiter said " you did but we ran out"
In my opinion the waiter should have told her right from the start , please order something else. Nothing was taken off her bill , no compensation what so ever. My daughter had a few bites and that was it. I've taught her NEVER send food back as you will be eating at least 20 minutes after everyone else. Nevertheless. She wasn't even given theat option anyway.
I know that when something is out of stock we are told right off the bat as every time I attend this restaurant I'm told that the mussels are not in.
Sorry but this restaurant won't be seeing any of us for a long time , if ever .
I went there with a very good friend of mine and we had a very good experience at Coquine. From the time we entered the restaurant we were welcomed by a very friendly and smiling face.
The food took a bit of time to come, but it was worth every minute. It was exquisite and the ambiance added to the intimacy of the experience.
I would recommend this gem to anyone who likes quiet, romantic places with fine cuisine.
Coquine was found online after searching for restaurants in the Yonge & Eglinton area. This one had so many great reviews and now I know why. The restaurant has a cozy feel and the service was incredible. Our waitress (Maria) was very friendly and made us feel right at home. She went above and beyond and took a few pictures of us since we were out celebrating a milestone birthday. The food was amazing, my plate was clean and for me that's hard to do. We had the Ceasar salad to start, the Cotelette due Porq & the Pôulet Rôti and for dessert the Creme Brulee. So good. We went on a Monday evening and when we arrived there were quite a few diners there and during our dinner a few more patrons were in and out. We ended up closing the joint cause of so much fun we had. We will definitely be back and would recommend this place to friends. The restaurant is very known and I wish I had known about it sooner but it was a great first time experience. Fin.
The wonderful dip and French bread were compliments of the house and were enjoyed by all. The onion soup was excellent. The salmon was perfect and ipresented with flair and imagination. The gluten-free chocolate cake was divine and so was the butterscoth one. A true pleasure!
Our table was fine, adjacent to the wall so the noise level waasn't too bad. We didn't have to wait too long for service. Our waiter was very friendly, maybe a bit too talkative.
We were disappointed with the desert because it wasn't clear from the description on the menu that what we'll get after all.
It wsn't the first time that i had been at this restaurant and definitely recommend it to friends.
This was our first visit to Coquine and certainly won't be our last. There were 2 large groups seated close to us so the noise level was certainly louder than we would like but the food more than compensated for this. Food was delicious, served nice and hot and portions were generous. The wine list needs some improvement although offerings were adequate and with a reasonable mark-up.
If you want authentic French cuisine in a charming bistro atmosphere then this is the place. It has old world charm, quiet for chatting with dinner companions and excellent friendly service. We were also treated to a gentle Jazz group on Sunday night. Perfect evening and save room or share dessert!
The onion soup really is the best but the slices of baguette they brought with the dip were cold and hard, my husband's couscous that came with his lamb was cold, my beat salad only had 2 nuts and hardly any goat cheese and not very tasty. We decided to go somewhere else for coffee and desert. We didn't think it was worth the price.
I have been to Coquine several times before and always enjoyed the food. This night we were offered a table in the back room, which isn't always available. It changed everything. The other room and the bar are high energy and too noisy for my taste. The back room was quiet and we were able to carry on a conversation without having to talk over the noise. We will return regularly.
The food is good, the service is friendly and attentive without being overwhelming, and they remember their clients. It does tend to be a bit noisy because there's very little to absorb sound, but we have enjoyed it for both lunch and supper. I'm also a celiac, and the waitstaff is very good about knowing what they can and cannot serve me, which is helpful.
A regular on my list of places to eat.
We went to Coquine for dinner on a Friday night, it wasn't too busy in the dining room when we first arrived close to 6:30, but the restaurant was bustling and alive by 8 pm. Loud, but fun.
I'm a huge cheese fan so we decided to have the Fromages du Jour (2 types) with our white wine to start. Yum! Love cheese.
Also, with all the bread and awesome white bean dip (a refreshing change from the general butter/balsamic sides), I only had the Salade de Roquette as my main. The parmesan crusted oyster mushrooms were delish with the baby arugula. My fiance had their Poisson du Jour which was Sea Bass that day. Seemed okay.
I would definitely come back to try their onion soup which I've heard is really good, and their crème brûlée.
We had a reservation for five at this Yonge and Eglinton location. It was a chance for us to catch up so we got there a bit early (6pm on a Friday), before the major crowd rolled in, which was around 7pm.
The food was absolutely fantastic and I believe all those in attendance had a great time. The one complaint was that the food did take a little longer than usual to arrive, which was a thought shared by the dining party. But it did not effect anyone in a negative way.
We usually head to Coquine for a quick Sunday dinner with our 2 children. They kitchen usually whips them up a simple pasta dish while we enjoy the simple yet delicious bistro cuisine. The jazz band on Sundays is also a treat. This time it was a work dinner. We needed a venue that had the appropriate casual yet impressive ambiance, great food and most importantly impeccable service. Coquine met all our expectations.
