Copley's on Palm Canyon Ratings and Reviews
Well, this was certainly disappointing. Read why:
Hugely disappointing. In a nutshell, almost everything was wrong. All entrees were overworked as if to impress, not to display finesse or showcase the fine ingredients they have to work with. I'd call it sloppy cooking. Virtually everything was overworked in a way one would see in upscale restaurants about 15 years ago whereas now finer dining is more suave, less confusing flavors and multiple sauces per plate.
Five people taken to a four-top for inside dining - squished into a small table right by the door. Unacceptable, as the restaurant at 600PM was mostly empty. Asked for a table outside, had to reject what they offered as it was by a service door with employees flying in and out every 5 seconds. Finally accepted a third table, BTW - the outside chairs are hugely uncomfortable.
Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Tacos: greasy sesame shells, overworked (the theme at Copley's) tuna and avocado into a tablespoon of glop into each taco shell, $17.00
T-bone Lamb chops: Two diners had this, it was akin to LAMB CRAB, meaning to wrestle the meat off of the chop took as much work as wrestling with a cooked crab. Not fun. The Basil and Chèvre mashed potatoes were overly basil'd and boring. A mint sauce and a Merlot reduction (Overworked dish) added to the confusion, $39.00!
The Ahi Tuna Special for the night (Three additional entrees to the eleven on the menu) was overly seasoned and with a super-peppery sauce on it which overwhelmed the taste of the delicate tuna. Cannot recall side dishes, diner said they ruined a fine piece of fish.
Two others had the Seared Jumbo Scallops, one enjoyed it and the other diner said it had a strong spicy seasoning and it made the scallops difficult to enjoy. They were properly cooked, $33.00.
In Copley's favor, our server James was very pleasant and knowledgable of the food, and their wine list is extensive with a lot of very reasonably priced wines with easy to read descriptions.
The food was good but could be better. I had chicken breast which was slightly over cooked making it somewhat dry. We sat in the garden which is nice, however, it was too dark. Our friend
complained that he couldn’t see what he was eating. It’s important to see what you eat because you do eat with your eyes as well as your tastebuds.
A great choice for a special occasion, or just a really high quality meal. My wife and I each had the Caesar salad which had an interesting twist -- grilled pineapple instead of croutons. I had a seared Ahi Tuna special which came with among other things a large and very tasty scallop. My wife had the New York strip -- very good! Wine selection is great, and the staff is professional and attentive.
Third time in 2 years. First time was great, second time, service was “snotty”; food was excellent. This time: Early reservations (5:30), arrived at 5:20 and waited outside closed gate until 5:35. On OT, had requested a quiet, romantic table inside. We were seated at a VERY small 2 top in a back corner. Chairs were at right angles so our kness were touching. OK, I guess that was the Romantic part; but but the place was empty and there were numerous, more romantic 4 tops available. Completely perused the menu before the wine list finally arrived. Quickly made a selection (Nice Petite Sarah) and waited to place the wine order. Finally was able to request the wine and then sat some more. Almost 20 minutes later we finally got the wine and had to grab the waiter as he was walking away after pouring the wine without taking our order. We were in no hurry; but would have preferred things to move along more professionally. My wife ordered the Ahi Tacos and I ordered the Caesar Salad. Both arrived promptly and were quite good, perfectly prepared and the plate presentations were very nice. I refilled our wine glasses a second time (shouldn’t this be a server responsibility?) and then the entrees arrived. I had ordered the Salmon plate and my wife ordered the duck. The Salmon was a good sized portion, perfectly prepared with a nice bed of seasoned rice and sautéed spinach. My wife’s duck looked wonderful; but was woefully undercooked. No server call back happened so I finally had to leave the table to track him down. A complimentary bowl of soup arrived while the duck was being re-prepared. When the duck arrived, it was still too rare to eat. By this time I had finished my meal so we asked for the check and a “to go” box for the duck. We got the dessert menu instead and waited for the check. By this time we just wanted to go. Frustrating, expensive and though some of the food was excellent, the overall experience was so far below our expectations we will probably not go back.
Always our favorite in Palm Springs. Creative, inspired, “foodie” food. Definitely gourmet food. Outstanding atmosphere; quaint spanish house with a large outdoor area under trees. Even on a cold night, you can eat comfortably without a jacket/sweater due to the many space heaters. Impeccable service and nice table setting. Even the bread is wonderful.
What happened? I’ve been here for dinner several times before and things have been great. Unfortunately, things have changed. Food was marginal. Both of their attempts at potatoes were a complete flop - three cheese chunky potato? Awful. Asked if they had another option, they said garlic mashed potatoes. I was hopeful. Again, awful. The grilled filet was very good. However, the lack of service and attention to detail overshadowed. I would try again. Overall, a complete disappointment for the money.
My friend ordered the Pork chop, said it was wonderful. I ordered the Salmon....very little flavor. Was actually dry. All the seasoning & flavor was atop the piece of skin, which fell off the fish as I cut it....which left a very large piece of salmon with very little taste. Wouldn't order it again. Definitely, not worth $36 or $37. Our waiter Charlie was ever so pleasant & attentive. It was because of him, I didn't complain. This was my first time at Copleys. Time will tell if I return or not.
Have eaten here on several occasions and never been disappointed. Despite a prefix Christmas Eve menu which we do t usually care for, this was an excellent selection. Was a treat to eat outside on Christmas Eve. Food was excellent as always and service is always good as long as you have Victor. He knows how to provide excellent service and make your evening special.
LOVE this restaurant. It is another hidden and sometines forgotten GEM. I hadn't been there for over 10 years and we decided to have our Christmas eve dinner there. OMG am I happy we chose Copleys! Greg ( one of the owners) greets you and treats you like a long time friend - sincere and so sweet! Now we ate outside on the patio (there are several) and that is my favorite option. I also feel the 'noise' level is very good for regular/intimate conversation, so not too sure about inside the restaurant (maybe a little more vibrant?). Food was AMAZING including the 'tasting dessert'.....that's all I can say! Check this place out, you won't be disappointed! I will be back again and again and again!
