Copa By Sea - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
The concept of char grilled is amazing . The seafood is fantastic but we weren't offered many bites of the grilled food. They brought all the fillers - yam fries, noodles , salad - the filler! We were never offered sushi... getting a drink was almost impossible - we are drinkers and they are truly missing the mark on service. There seems to be many hostesses- not enough servers. I had been once before, solo, had talked the manager into letting me sit at the bar and the experience was fantastic. This night was mediocre. The server told us that was their last weekend as Copa by sea - no one was interested - really disappointing.
The food was amazing. The whole concept of unlimited seafood is the greatest idea ever. I was very saddened to hear from our server that they were closing the restaurant last weekend.
This review is almost pointless. The shrimp was huge and tasty. Loved the trout too. Didn't like the limited options of sides. I think they only offered four and the salad was too bitter to enjoy. Get rid of the dressing or whatever is bringing the bitter.
For $50 a person, I was not happy with the limit to 4 oysters and 4 scallops per person, then pay $1 after. For that amount of money per person, excluding drinks, let me decide when I've had enough scallops and oysters.
Overall, totally loved it here, I would be a repeat customer if they weren't closing the restaurant.
This was the first time we tried out the seafood menu and all items were absolutely great! Even our meat lovers loved all the seafood.
Things were going well except for one incident which kind of turned off the mood for the remaining of the time.
We had inquired about the show which happens upstairs 9:15 and 10:15 and our waitress said we were welcome to go upstairs during the that time.
So we informed our waitress as it was time for the show and headed upstairs for the 9:15
When we returned to our seat the waiter that serves seafood grill items gave us an attitude about he didn't know we went upstairs and said "I had all the next items on the grill, what do you think we did with it since you guys weren't here? We had to throw it away."
Totally unacceptable. Our waitress knew we wanted to go see the show and clearly the kitchen and staff need to be more in sync.
For a restaurant that provides entertainment and allows anyone from any level to go watch it, the staff should be trained to let their customers know ahead of time to avoid such issues.
Our waitress was sweet and respectful but the guy who was serving the grilled items needs more training.
The food was delicious, my boyfriend and I came for his birthday and later attended a raptors game. The 10% off because of the raptors tickets was a great bonus! Wishing we saw the dancers like last time we came, we weren't sure if we hadn't seen them because it was an earlier dinner or because it was by the sea. Will highly recommend this to friends and family, it was perfect!
Overall: Overpriced good food with limited ambiance
I like to be positive so: Great place to bring a date and find out what she likes.
My wife and I are foodies and the food/ambiance/price combination does not make sense to us as there are many better other options so we will not be back.
To look forward to: oysters and black cod (limit of 4 small pieces unfortunately), the eel sushi , the shrimps as well as their only salad which was very tasty. there is potential in the tuna but it was over cooked
Ordinary: bacon wrapped cod, any sushi besides the eel, the service (ok, beautiful people but they need to learn to be humble and provide good service), desert was ok but competition does it better
Less than ordinary: the meat was not seared right, too much parmesan, tasted awful really. My wife and I don't often agree :- ) but we both agreed this was to avoid at all cost. Lobster mac and cheese fails to deliver with very little taste for such a big name.
I can't say the food or service is bad but I would certainly have higher hopes for the price tag. If you like fish and don't mind the ambiance August 8 instead or any good chineese food on Spadina/Dundas area for that matter ( based on food quality, Not recommended for the high expectation date as the decor will not meet expectations).
Although there was a delay in getting seated as it was a busy Saturday night the service and staff were very friendly. The seafood was awesome! It was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The menu allowed to taste a little of everything and I would definitely recommend a visit!
Horrible service. When i asked for the bill, i was waiting 20 mins before I got the bill. I was there for a total of 2 hrs and def did not eat for my liking. Wait between food/meat was 20 mins. Def would not go again. I understand its busy, so maybe rest. Needs to hire more staff. Will not dine again.
Reservations on Saturday night at 6 pm. The place was jumping already! Once seated - the food starts coming - staff are very attentive and friendly. When they say "welcome back" - they seem to really mean it - we have been coming to Copa by the Sea since it opened whenever we are in town to go to the theatre - one of our top restaurants! We order the oysters, some sushi and all of the sides to start and fill up with "just off the grill" seafood and meat. Gives you an opportunity to try new things and have extras of your favourites - like the black cod. Would highly recommend! We are moving far away from Toronto and this will be one of the things that we are going to miss.
We really loved the place! Food was delicious! Oysters were the best we ever tried. Sushi, even though the place isn't specializing in them, were perfect! Out of all the seafood we got we didn't like only dijon tuna but it didn't spoil the experience.
Overall great place for getting fresh and well cooked seafood. Will definitely come back here!
We've been coming here for a while now, and every time we come Copa reduces their offering. Originally there was a bar that offered shrimp and crab legs, but that no longer exists. They have also removed ceviche from the menu. This time around, they have limited the amount of Black Cod and Scallops each person can have to 4 pieces each. Any additional piece is $1 each. This sort of nickel and diming on top of the $50 price has turned me off from this restaurant.
The food is decent, especially the Rodizio (the food they bring around on skewers). However, it's too expensive for what it is.
The food was absolutely phenomenal. They were very kind. They took off the seabass which was extremely disappointing - they replaced it with trout which I didn't like but they accommodated me by bringing me some black cod with the same sauce they put on the seabass! It tasted almost exactly the same - It was amazing :)
I booked my reservation over a month in advance for my mother's birthday! 6 of us came from Niagara and arrived about 15 mins prior to 8pm (our reservation time). Our table wasn't ready so we waited at the bar and had some lovely drinks. At 8pm our table still wasn't ready and everyone was hungry, I couldn't believe that I had these reservations made over a month in advance and our table wasn't ready on time. We were finally seated at 15 minutes past 8 after watching the family sitting at our table being told it is basically time for them to leave. I was not impressed that we even had to wait to be seated let alone watch a family still sitting at our table at 8pm.
I came to the restaurant looking for a unique Toronto experience, and was surprised to the upside by both the quality of the food and the exceptionally friendly and engaging service. The value is excellent and the the decor very modern. The seafood is all served Brazilian style, which is much lighter than the traditional red meat and chicken, allowing you to sample broadly without feeling like you're in a food coma by the end of the evening. Definitely a location I would consider recommending and going back to.
The best seafood Ive eaten in Canada 5star quality and amazing friendly service and servers. Highly recommend it, I went there for my girlfriends birthday, she loved it and she was so stoked, and impressed, and she concurred it was her favorite birthday, restaurant and seafood she has ever eaten. Copacanbana is 4/5stars, Copa by the Sea is 5/5stars. Ive eaten at both places, Copa by the Sea has a better variety of food. Best seafood restaurant ever!!!
The food here is amazing, my personal favourites are the lobster mac and cheese, the baked shrimp sushi rolls and the spicy sea bass. However everything is delicious, and since it is an all you can eat menu you can truly focus on only certain dishes if that's what you prefer.
Had a great experience with the seafood rodizio! Yummy! If you are a fan of all you can eat, this is the place. Though there aren't as many selections as a traditional meat rodizio, the melt in your mouth/candy-like flavour of the fish makes up for it. Seated quickly (we were there at 6:45pm on a Saturday night), the service was friendly and outside of feeling like we'd been forgotten by our server a couple of times (the restaurant got much busier while we were there) was prompt and attentive. Gaucho 'Gary' was a superb provider of fish and humour, and Hostess, 'Shawna' stopped by frequently to ensure we were enjoying the experience. We will definitely go back!
The service, quality of food and value are amazing. We were there to celebrate for two birthdays. It was a really great time and everyone was very satisfied with the evening. My only complaint would be with the hosts at the entrance and on phone. Not very approachable and kind of felt like I was interrupting them by checking in for my reservation.
I don't know was it a bad day or something, but VERY slow service from both waitress and servers for EVERYTHING! I was waiting cocktail for 25min, sushi for 20 min, even bill came after 20 min waiting time, and we even didn't have a chance to try some food.
The food was extremely salty and was not worth the price of $50 per person. The sangria tasted like juice and didn't seem to have a wine taste at all. While the waitress did explain how everything works (it was our first time) that was about all that I can say was good about the restaurant. Some of the sides we ordered we asked our waitress several times for them that took a while to come and some items didn't come at all. Overall, we were very disappointed with this whole experience.
Food was great, but service was really bad. There was a few guys which made an effort.
Rodizio concept is not for sure, basically here the company counts how many pieces of everything you eat and workers are not happy working here.
On top of this, there was a group of "beautiful" ladies who had all the attention and food in first place.
I wont come back here
Came here for our anniversary. This was our second visit. The service was excellent. The fish was fresh, oysters were sweet, food cooked perfectly, sushi was top of the line! We were surprised with a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. This place is a must if you want great food, great experience, and a nice romantic atmosphere. We came here from Buffalo NY and were not disappointed!
My visit was so so compared to my last time at copa. My server was hard to flag down at times and I had to ask other servers for things at times. Even had to ask another server for my bill. My server then saw us put cash in the leather pouch and walked away..? Instead of telling us she will be back with change. Lucky for her were were sick of waiting around and just left without getting back change.
The food was good, but their system of getting food to your table was confusing, not well explained and we ended up not getting our food after requesting it 4 separate times. We left after just over an hour and a half still without getting everything we wanted.
