Excellent and interesting take on French cuisine, consistently well-executed. Atmosphere that is really "Convivial".
Convivial is an excellent restaurant with delectable cooking. Chef Cedric pays the utmost attention to every single detail and ingredient, which results in most dishes being satisfyingly delicious. I, myself, think the Daurade is to die for and I simply must have the Seasonal Vegetable Medley either as a main course itself or as a side dish that my family fights over to get their fair share of Sunchoke-topped veggies. Who knew that vegetables could be so heavenly. Frankly, this dish has pushed me over the edge to becoming a pesca-vegeterian. You simply must try it while in season! Others at our table were also raving about the Skate wing, the rainbow trout, and the gnocchi dishes. The silence at the table was testament to how mesmerized each diner was with his/her selection. And these are people who never stop talking, as a general rule.
It was a dinner with sister and her fiancé so it was nice to catch up with them with fabulous food
Celebrating a work event.
Our server was not prompt with our drinks/food and not very attentive. The food was great but disappointing service.
Very salty entree (rainbow trout) - otherwise great food, and good ambiance.
Everything was so rich and delicious!
I went for brunch and the food was good although the service was fair. Food arrived and server never stopped by to see if we needed anything -- we did. By the time she showed up we were halfway through the food. The baguette toast that comes with many of the dishes was delicious but far too crunchy; it was nearly impossible to bite into. Please put pepper on the tables! There was only salt.
We had a great time at
Totally excellent Wonderful happy hour too. My steak was outstanding and partners skate fabulous
From out of town and we very much enjoyed our brunch and the pitcher of mimosas was brilliant !
Wait staff very polite and attentive and the quiche I had was fantastic.
I love bringing friends from out of town to Convivial. The food is always excellent and I love the peaceful and comfortable atmosphere which is great for catching up. The chicken and waffles are to die for and you can never go wrong with splitting the cinnamon bun!
At Convivial the food and service is always excellent. This is restaurant is must.
Great food and great service. I love that they use their regular menu on NYE.
Best restaurant I've been to in DC since moving here a year and a half ago.
We celebrated an early New Years dinner at Convivial. Everything was lovely. Portions were larger than expected so two of us were quite full with 2 entrees and 1 starter. The only dude was the garlic bread- way too garlicky imo.
The whole team is very welcoming and the food is excellent. The bar and dining tables offer two different ambiences either for a casual moment or a special occasion.
Convivial is hands down one of our favorite restaurants in DC. The menu is constantly changing and we always find fantastic new options that keep us coming. Our last server, Kevin, was also fantastic, given us and our family a really nice NYE dining experience.
Terrible service and the food was just okay. The best part of the meal were the potato chips with an amazing onion dip. Everything else went downhill. When we arrived, despite being seated right away, it took almost ten minutes before our server came to our table to take our drink order. It took another 15 minutes before our drinks arrived and then the server got the drink order wrong. We had ordered the chips at the same time as our drinks and we had mostly finished the chips before our drinks ever arrived. The entrees (steak frites and skate wing) were classic French dishes but did not wow - the puy lentils were mushy. When we finally finished our meals, the busboy passed our table multiple times but never cleared our empty glasses or empty plates. Finally, the server had to take our plates. We won't be going back.
I really wanted to like this restaurant because I read it was a regular haunt of our local food writers. The food was just OK. I ordered the seafood boouillaise but the sauce was grainy and not the right color (should have a red tint to it from saffron - it was brown) and the fish was either overcooked or one piece was a tail end full of bones. Salad lacked any flavor with dressing. Our guests did not finish their salmon appetizer. We also ordered the floating island and it wasn't prepared with the correct classical preparation. Cloyingly sweet. For a French-American restaurant, I was disappointed. I was also expecting more sophisticated/tailored service from the wait staff. Our service was rushed and a bit rough. Very expensive for what we received. I'd probably go back and sit at the bar and have a drink and an appetizer, but it's too costly to try again for a full meal, or as a place to entertain important guests, as we were the night we went.
If you crave sodium, by all means book a table ASAP. Otherwise, steer clear. Very unfortunate no one in the kitchen seems to actually taste anything they send out to diners.
We read reviews online. Our experience was very good. Best quiche I've ever had.
I was amazed that we could get a table at Convivial on Christmas Eve, but we did, and the entire experience there was about as good as it could have been. The food on offer was varied, delicious and quirky, and, the service was absolutely without flaw. The food was so good...
Enjoyed the food which was tasty in s cheerful environment
This was Christmas Eve. The staff was very welcoming. Lots of interesting and delicious options on the menu. We had someone with us who can be difficult and she was highly pleased with the evening as were we all
Interesting combinations of ingredients and attractive presentation. We took a later reservation so the dining room was probably quieter than prime time. Service was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their selections. Was easy enough to park on street.
Absolutely incredible food and friendly service
Always great food!!! Wonderful, sophisticated flavors.
Everyday dining restaurant. Cozy and with excelent and affordable wines. Personally, the best steak tartar in town (try it with the small fries on top!)!!!
I highly recommend the Poulet Rouge for Two. Crispy skin, delicious sauce, and great sides!
This was our second visit to Convivial and was also very enjoyable. It's a comfortable space with friendly and helpful staff. The tone is "high end' but not pretentious or intimidating. The food is a creative take on French and portions are good. Generally speaking it's well-prepared and delicious! I would have given 4 stars for food but we found both entrees too salty. Fortunately, I don't think that's the norm.
Pretty bad service
We were visiting DC from out of town and looking for a place in some neighborhood we hadn't explored yet, and came across Convivial in the Shaw neighborhood. It was easy to get to on the Metro and it led us to a whole new part of town we've never seen. Oh, also, the food. It was AMAZING, ridiculous, so good. It doesn't look like much from the outside (at least on a cold winter evening it didn't), but inside it is, in a word, convivial. I wish it was in my neighborhood -- everything about it was on point. Can't wait to go back.
The food was very good and the service was excellent with the waitress answering all of our questions about the menu while asking about our preferences and assisting in matching them
Despite the proliferation of restaurants in Logan Circle/Shaw, Convivial remains one of our favorites. Great food, wonderful service, and relatively quiet atmosphere despite the crowds.
A wonderful dinner, lovely food, and discreet attentive service. Reminded us of France.
You hosted us for a large group dinner on Dec 12. Everything was excellent, thank you.
Great meal; pleasant service. Will definitely return again, soon!
Server seemed distract, went for brunch, food is amazing and atmosphere perfect.
