Consuelo Mexican Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Awful customer service tonight. Server was inattentive, like did not check back on how food was, or offered another round of drinks or even water refills in a timely manner, and when another person in our party arrived, had to flag server down for him to get service. Our late party member literally sat at our table for 15 minutes and watched every other glass/dish get taken away bc some of us were done dining, and he still had not even anything to drink. When it was time to pay, server kept telling our party she can't split checks - into two, not even like per person - instead of trying to figure it out. She also said we should have explicitly mentioned for our checks to be split at the beginning of dinner. We live in Santana Row, and we may not come back to Consuelo's because of this. Server also tried to say she can't apply our resident discount twice for the split checks. Never had an issue like this at any other given restaurant in the Row. Come to think of it, never had awful service like this anywhere in the Row, especially as residents. Such a wasted night and sorry that we chose Consuelo's for our gathering tonight.
Although I requested a table outside, we opted to dine inside since the outside temperature was over 100 degrees. But in retrospect we should have opted for that table outside since the air conditioning inside was sub-par if any. Very disappointing place for such a cool venue. Food is really not that great and I will not go back nor will I recommend.
It was a fantastic meal, but it ended in a huge dud. Once the bill was paid we were pretty much ignored for the last 30 minutes. Would have been nice to at least get water refresh after, but the big thud was we were literally the last table occupying inside ten minutes before they were closing for business, and one of the employees collected the empty water glasses on the table, and told us "we all done here," gave a chop signal across his neck and walked off with the glasses. Basically telling us it was time to go, nicely done, you killed the evening. More than likely will never return. Good food, but the service was less than desired.
This is a great place for a social dinner out. Outdoor patio is situated next to an outdoor tequila bar that has live latin music most evenings. Consuelo is like being at the party, but just being on the edge of the party instead of in the middle of it. Excellent people watching!
Food was good. Ordered the fajitas for two, it was delicious and offered great value especially for someone like me who cannot finish an individual order. Offers crispy tortilla chips while waiting with 3 various salsa dips-- delish! There were a couple of live bands playing outdoors in the plaza...added to a vibrant early evening!
Service was ok, there was a trainee, my cranberry club soda tasted like beer with old flat water, it was disgusting and I asked them to replace it and it still tasted horrible. The guacamole was ok, the chips were stale, the need in the quesadilla tasted old, the only decent thing was the chicken Suiza enchilada, but definitely not worth the money! Ridiculously overpriced for what you got but then again it is Santana Row.
The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived and only two or three tables were occupied when we left. The drinks were fine, but the food (salmon tacos, shrimp tacos and salad) was pretty bland and disappointing. I have not been to Consuelo in a few years, but I remember the food being better in the past.
There were no tables available for our 8-person reservation when we arrived. All tables able to accommodate 8 were full of people so far into dinner service it was clear that the restaurant had seated these tables with no regard to our reservation. So when I arrived, I was told by the manager that we had to wait "because you did not reply to the text message we sent you." The text message asked me to come to the host stand, which is what we did. So we waited for our table for 40 minutes all the while being told I should have replied to the text message. Isn't that great service? We would have gone to another restaurant, but Consuelo requires a credit card for parties of 7+ with a no-show charge of $25/person. Given the lengths to which the manager worked to blame the customer, we decided to wait for the table. We were convinced she was dishonest enough to claim that we didn't show and that she couldn't re-sell our table - even though people were seated at it.
If you can get past the attitude at the host stand, the drinks range from good to very good, the salsas are inauthentic but still delicious, guacamole nicely made table side, waitress cheery and fast. For the quality of the food and poor attitude from the front of house, you're better off spending your money elsewhere.
We ordered a pitcher of sangria and it was enjoyable and a great value. Of the trio of salsas that accompany the tortilla chips that were brought to the table, we only liked one - the Serrano based. All were well-pureed and creamy in texture: one was too fruity and sweet, and the other tasted like canned enchilada sauce tempered with ketchup. I ordered the Chile rellano, which was a fire-roasted poblano and filled with cheese and diced vegetables, served with rice and pureed black beans. It was a much lighter version than the usual fried offering. It was really tasty. My accomplice ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole. The chicken and tortillas were delicious, however, the mole, while flavourful, did not have the rich depth of cocoa nor complex spiciness one expects from this type of sauce. It was a bit too sweet. We concluded our meal with rich coffee and the sharing of a flan. The flan itself was delicious and wonderful with the coffee. However, the caramel on the flan appeared to be added as a topping as opposed to the sauce that it is generally baked in and it tasted like salted caramel, which overpowered the delicate flavour of the perfectly cooked custard. Consuelo's has a small but eclectic menu with several vegetarian and gf choices.
The food & service were only fair at Consuelo Mexican Bistro, and prices are very high. The restaurant has a nice setting at the end of Santana Row, and we enjoyed dining outside watching Saturday afternoon activity, but we left less than fully satisfied after paying a pricey check for Mexican food.
Excellent place for a Friday night date. Get a patio table, and listen to the live music across the way at the tequila bar. It's like being in the edge of a party instead of in the middle of it. Great camarones y reboso (shrimps wrapped in bacon) and carnitas. Excellent sangria (get a pitcher for best value).
